Kao completes second consumerproducts plant in Indonesia

PT Kao Indonesia, a group companyof Japan’s Kao Corp, has completedconstruction of a second consumerproducts plant at KarawangInternational Industrial City (KIIC) inKarawang Regency, West Java. Thenew plant will add to Kao’s localproduction capacity for Attack laundrydetergents as well as producingdiapers. Kao’s two consumerproducts plants in Indonesia [see alsoFocus on Surfactants, Sep 2013] willbuild Kao’s capacity to respond to theneeds of the growing Indonesianmarket with a stable supply of goods.Kao will also work to improveproduction efficiency throughsynergies with the adjacent KaoIndonesia Chemicals chemical plant.

Pacific Sands launches expanded,updated line of branded cleaningproducts

Pacific Sands Inc has launched anexpanded line of its proprietary,branded Natural Choices cleaningproducts for the consumer market.The company’s three Oxy productswill have new and improvedformulations that give each morecleaning power, and will be availablein flexible, environmentally friendlypackaging. Oxy-Dish and Oxy-Primelaundry detergent will be transitionedto water-soluble pods from thetraditional loose powder, with newone-pound bag sizes for Oxy-Dishand Oxy-Prime laundry, and a twopound size for Oxy-Boost. PacificSands is launching a new LiquidLaundry product in 32- and 64-ouncesizes. The company has alsorepackaged and resized its line ofhousehold spray cleaners, whichinclude bathroom, multi-purpose,degreaser and glass. The company

plans to launch new packaging andsizing for its liquid dish soap, handsoap and shampoo later in 2014.

OtherA healthier margarine

Food ingredients producer Palsgaardhas developed Palsgaard Citrem3212, a new liquid emulsifier designedto bypass the melting process inmargarine production. The productenables producers to use emulsifiersin fat systems with minimum relianceon melting-up emulsifiers. The productis also a citric acid ester (E472c) witha single E-number. Under the termsprovided by the EU Directive 95/2/ECand Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008,manufacturers are able to use anyamount of Citrem 3212 in theirrecipes. This type of emulsifier can beeasily combined with unsaturatedmonodiglycerides for lower fatsolutions. Citrem 3212 is derived fromsunflower oil with high oleic acidscontent as a lipid source and does notcontain hydrogenated fat, palm oil orsoya lecithin. Testing showed benefitsin both liquid and brick margarine.Notably, the company said that Citrem3212 requires the right processingconditions for optimal results. Thecompany uses its plant in Singaporeto offer service in product set-upsimulation and process parameters.

Makeover for top-selling herbicide

A reformulated version of Monsanto’sherbicide Roundup has beenlaunched. The new product, which willreplace Roundup Max (680 g/kg), isreported to have a 6% higherconcentration of glyphosate at 720g/kg and improved salts and bettersurfactants. Roundup has sales ofapproximately $7 bn/y. More than 210varieties of glyphosates are currentlysold in the UK since Roundup’spatent expired in 2001.

Exemption from the requirement of atolerance for ASABSA

The US Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) has amended twoexisting exemptions from therequirement of a tolerance forresidues of diethanolamine salts ofalkyl (C8-C24) benzenesulfonic acid(ABSA) – not to exceed 7% ofpesticidal formulations – and twoexemptions from the requirement of atolerance for residues ofdimethylaminopropylamine,isopropylamine, ethanolamine andtriethanolamine salts of ABSA(without limitation), herein referred tocollectively as amine salts of ABSA orASABSA, when used as inertingredients (surfactants) applied togrowing (pre-harvest) crops and toanimals. The Joint Inerts Task ForceCluster Support Team 8 (JITF CST 8)c/o Huntsman Corp submitted apetition to EPA under the FederalFood, Drug, and Cosmetic Act,requesting these amendments. Thisregulation eliminates the need toestablish a maximum permissiblelevel for residues of ASABSA.

ENVIRONMENTMakers of D4 agree to conduct tests

In the USA, Dow Corning, MomentivePerformance Materials USA, Evonik,Shin-Etsu Silicones of America andWacker Chemical will measure thelevels of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane(D4) in wastewater, aquaticorganisms and sediment in areasnear several wastewater treatmentplants. In an enforceable consentagreement with the US EnvironmentalProtection Agency (EPA), the firmswill share the costs of the project,which is estimated at up to $1.2 M.The deal was announced by EPA inApr 2014 after previous studiesrevealed the presence of D4sediments and bioaccumulates thatpose toxic threats to aquaticorganisms. D4 was once used inpersonal care products and iscurrently used as a chemicalintermediate, solvent, sealant,adhesive and ingredient in paints,
