11th AnnualStampede

The 11th annual StapletonStampede will take place Sat-urday, August 15. The Kids 1mile will be followed by the5K. The race starts at 7:30a.m. at Live Fit Gym.

Registration forms are avail-able in the lobby of the Sta-pleton Post Office or contactChelsey Myers at 308-520-0114. Enter by August 7 to re-ceive a shirt the day of therace. All late entry shirts willbe ordered after race day.This event is for all ages andfitness abilities.

Tire amnesty program a success

Unsightly used tires will now be recycled and out of sight as the Village of Stapleton’s tire amnesty collection sitesaw 150 ton taken in at the Village property on J Street. Grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Environmentand Energy is being obtained to help with the cost of the local program. Recycled scrap tires are used for artificialturf football and soccer fields, athletic running tracks, and playground surfacing.

The first reading of thenuisance ordinance, a re-port on the tire amnestycollection program, andproperty coming up forauction within the Vil-lage, were all topics of dis-cussion at the regularVillage of Stapleton boardmeeting held Wednesday,July 8, at the StapletonCommunity Center.

Nuisance Ordinance#228-220, drawn up byVillage attorney Mike Bor-ders, was read. This willreplace the junk ordi-nance and will be a moreeffective way for the Vil-lage board to clean-up un-sightly property.

The tire amnesty pro-gram was a success with150 ton being collected. Agrant has been applied forto help with the cost ofthis program that helpedrid the area of used tiresat no cost to patrons.

Stapleton Public SchoolsSuperintendent HowardGaffney was present atthe meeting to presentupdates on the remodel-ing project at the school.The school is obtainingland to the east of the ex-isting parking lot to ex-pand parking.

Property at 312 E Streetand 301 C Street will becoming up for auction.

This week’s Enterprise hasthe first of four weeks ofpublication of legal no-tices in these cases of theCounty of Logan vs. de-fendants, Ryan Hanzlickand RES Distressed AssetFund XXI, LLC. The Vil-lage of Stapleton holdsliens against these prop-erties.

A grant has been submit-ted to help fund the newproposed recycling andmaintenance building onVillage property locatedon J Street.

The board voted unani-mously to drop the pend-ing case against AustinSchell through the Village

attorney for unpaid solidwaste collection at thistime.

Dogs running at largeand viscous dogs withinthe Village limits werediscussed. Residents arereminded that all dogsmust be on a leash, in aproper pen, or kept in-side.

Armor coating of streetswill include the comple-tion of 4th Street and allof H Street.

The next regular Villageboard meeting will beWednesday, August 12, at7:30 p.m. at the StapletonCommunity Center.

100th MCHS Graduation ExercisesThe day finally arrived

It took some time com-ing, but the 100th gradua-tion exercises for theClass of 2020 at McPher-son County High Schooltook place Saturday, July11, in the high school au-ditorium.

Members of the class areAlissa Violet Apperson,Ashton Joann Apperson,Theresa Marie Ascherl,Samantha Rose Bryant,Faith Lee Correll, KatelynMarie Powers, SamanthaLynne Simmons, JencyMae Starr, and HolliannaKay Watson.

Decorations carried outclass colors of gray, purpleand yellow, and the classflower of purple carna-tions. The appropriatemotto by Elenor Rooseveltfor the all-girl class was“Well behaved womenrarely make history.”

Their class song was“Fly” - Maddie and Tae.

Jency Starr was the vale-dictorian and Theresa As-cherl, salutatorian.

Hollianna Watson gavethe opening and closingremarks.

Diplomas were pre-sented by SuperintendentTim Vanderheiden, LanaWatson, board president,and Toni Powers, boardtreasurer.

Renee Connell, guidancecounselor presented thefollowing scholarships:

Stapleton Chambermakes BBQ plans

Stapleton Area Chamber of Commerce members metThursday, July 2, for their regular June meeting.

Reports were heard on the very successful citywidegarage sale day. It was suggested a trailer is made avail-able next year for people who would like to have itemstaken to North Platte. The new website platformshould be operational in July. A grant is being lookedinto for the new digital sign project being worked onby the Chamber. It is hoped the sign could be installedon Highway 83 at the fairgrounds and be used to ad-vertise events and businesses.

Chamber’s annual Logan County Fair & Rodeo bar-becue will be held Saturday, August 15, in the Staple-ton Park. Donation letters will be mailed around July15.

Members voted to donate $20.00 in Chamber bucksfor a flag prize for the Joe Kramer Memorial GolfTournament.

Junior Chamber member, Megan Amos, gave a re-port on her “Community Career Day” plans. As a 2020HOBY Virtual Leadership Seminar graduate, Amoswas given the task of creating a community serviceproject. She sees the issue of youth involvement incommunities needing addressed. She has proposedsending a survey out to the junior class at StapletonHigh School and asking students to choose a careerthey are interested in. Students would be paired withlocal businesses on “Career Day.” Students would jobshadow businesses in the morning and lunch wouldbe served by Chamber at noon. The afternoon wouldbe spent touring businesses in Stapleton.

Amos hopes this could turn into an annual JuniorChamber member event.

Chamber voted unanimously to give their approvalfor Amos to continue with “Community Career Day”plans.

Other new ideas included supporting the AugustaWind Golf Course by helping host a community golfnight.

The next regular Chamber meeting is Thursday, Au-gust 27 at noon, at the Stapleton Community Center.

Fire Department has an-nounced that due to COVID-19 health concerns, there willbe no annual barbecue thisyear.

Donations are welcome andmay be sent to P.O. Box 44,Stapleton, NE 69163. Fundswill be used to purchase up-dated Jaws of Life equip-ment.

The fire department is look-ing forward to having the bar-becue in 2021.

Senior Friendship Clubwill meet Friday, July 24at 1:30 p.m. in the SeniorCitizen’s Room in the Sta-pleton Community Cen-ter. All are welcome.
