As we enter the 39th National Day
Celebration we at OCI has had
many cheers. OCI received the
BASEC product approval. Mr Hans
Meiring, COO states that it is a rare
distinction, however, we must not
remain content with this certification,
Oman Cables will explore various
other international accreditations for
which the ground work has already
begun.
Another significant milestone
achieved in the history of OCI. AMemorandum of Understanding
was signed with Electricity
Holding Company; a governing
body representing all electricity
companies of Oman. Management
cites that this will open-up many
more avenues and will be a win-
win situation for Oman Cables and
Electricity Holding.
OAPIL OCIs ambitious projectat Sohar does not need a special
mention; there has been huge
developments that has taken place
during the last few months which
has been reported in the subsequent
pages.
With this issue we have introduced
a new topic our value creators in
which you will find how our shop-
floor employees have nurtured ideas
and applied in their daily tasks thus
creating value no matter how small
it is, it adds value to our company.
Dont forget, share your thought/
insights and win RO 20 worth gift
voucher, we will select the best 5
contributions from the employees,
information can be in any form worth
sharing.
We invite your feedback and insightsat [email protected]

Editorial
OCI received the BASEC product
certification in August 2009 and I
take this opportunity to congratulateall OCI employees. It is a matter of
great pride for every OCI-ITE. At the
same time it invites every one of
us to be more meticulous in every
process of the manufacturing of
our products. What is needed is
precision in our thoughts, approach
and in our everyday actions.
With such a certification being
increasingly adopted by companies
around the world, you cant afford
not to understand it. We have
set our manufacturing standards
HIGH, and it is your responsibility
to set it HIGHER. Remember my
colleagues, this certification does
not mean that we have received a
crown, rather I would say we have
got a responsibility to manufacture
top-notch products of the highest
quality standards. I wish from nowon we live with this philosophy in
our mind which runs through our
genes.
Nothing compares to the
effectiveness of quality certification
when it comes to improving a
companys operational efficiency,
rising its productivity, and lowering
its cost. It improves design process,
get products to market faster and
builds customer loyalty. Perhaps
the biggest but most significant
benefit of BASEC is its capacity to
develop market leadership, improves
your customers experience and
extremely powerful way to boost
OCIs competitiveness.
Message from VCMD

Way back in 1994 OCI was the first Omani company that
was accredited with ISO 9000 certification.

Message
It accomplishes that by reducing
waste and inefficiency and by
designing the companys products
and internal process so that
customers get what they want
when they want it and when you
provide it, obviously you want to
ensure your customers satisfaction
more than your competitors do.
Another important factor, if you
are spending hundreds and million
of dollars on any project, you cant
afford to figure out process or
design inconsistencies late in thegame. It is incredibly effective in
discovering them on the drawing
board. One great reason why we
noticed that every time a business
done into quality not only did its
financial performance improves, so
did its industry benchmarks.
Our enhanced focus will be:
Consistency in services or
products
Complying delivery promise
improvement in customers
experience
improvement in internal process
cost improvements
wash out anything that mightcause waste, inefficiency, or a
customer to get annoyed with
your unpredictability.
repetitive tasks
avoid redundancy in data
generation
avoid duplication
avoid procrastination
This being a very important factor
of management strategy to find
the best practice, adopt them,
continually improve them. Best
practices are not only integral to
make strategies happen, they are
sustainable competitive advantage
if you are continually improving
them.

EHC Signs MOU with OCI
The Sultanate of Oman has witnessed rapid andcontinued growth in its economy since the beginning
of the Renaissance way back in 1970. Since then the
Government has taken various initiatives that facilitated
the Omani and the international business communities
to participate in the Sultanates growth.
The Electricity Holding Company (EHC) and its
subsidiary companies were established to ensure that
there is sufficient supply of electricity to meet the needs
of citizens and customers in Oman now and into thefuture. Some of the various subsidiary companies were
created to undertake the operation and development
of the regions electricity infrastructure in authorized
areas of the country.
This move allowed the national industries to grow
exponentially and Oman Cables Industry (OCI) is
an example of a company that demonstrated its
capabilities in the local and international markets which
includes South America, Australia, Europe, Asia Pacific,
GCC and MENA regions where a reputable customer
base has been established. Today Oman Cables is
a key contributor to the national non-oil Omani origin
exports.
EHC and OCI signed an MOU to facilitate the supply
of products to EHC subsidiary companies. The intent
of the MOU is for both parties to cooperate in the
design of the supply framework that has cost benefits
to electricity companies, delivers uninterrupted supply
of products, enables better inventory management,
fosters the exchange of technical know-how, thereby
creating a sustainable long-term development program
in the Sultanate of Oman.
On this occasion Mr. Karl Matacz, CEO of EHC said
that the MOU will establish the basis on which to enter
into term contracts for the supply of products from the
electrical supply industry to the EHC Group companies.
The term contracts will promote technology transfer
from suppliers to ensure that the transmission and
distribution network in Oman utilizes leading global
technologies.
Also Mr. Karl said that Oman Cables with its global
presence has the capability in both manufacturing
technology and logistic capabilities to meet the needs
of the electricity industry of the Country.
Mr. Hussain Salman Al Lawati, Vice Chairman and
Managing Director of Oman Cables said that throughEHC and its subsidiaries great support, Oman Cables
was able to become a true Global player. He added,
Oman Cables constantly endeavours to ensure their
manufacturing capabilities are industry leading edge to
ensure that Oman as country has the best technology
available.
He also said that such synergies will create opportunities
for nurturing local talent from both the institutions and
expose them to Global best practices and benefit fromexisting Oman Cables global strategic alliances.

Accidents can and do happen
and the aftermath can be both
traumatic and expensive to all
concerned.
In order to minimise the impact
of accidents on our staff and
visitors, to help prevent and
if necessary deal with fires it
was decided that some kind
of formal training of OCI staff
was necessary.
Obviously it would be
logistically impossible to train
everyone so a cross section
of around 80 intrepid fire
fighter trainees and 70 first
aiders were chosen from all
departments to be taught thenecessary skills.
The courses were undertaken
in Plant 2 meeting room and
largely went without a hitch
apart from people getting wet
whilst putting out practice fires
with hose pipes or bandaging
their colleagues very tightly.
Throughout the entire schedule
of courses staff were attentive
and keen to learn and they
even had a little fun along the
way.
Everyone who took part
can and should be proud
of themselves and those
members of staff who were
not involved can feel more
secure knowing that their lives
are in the safe hands of their
trained colleagues.
Well done everyone who
took part, what a team!

I am a final year student of the WeljatCollege and during my vacation I did my
internship in Oman Cables for a period of 2
months. Usually many students undergo
training but I was very privileged to get
trained in various departments in this
short period.
Initially my training started in the Human
Resources department in the payroll section. After a few
weeks, when GM-Sales & Marketing secretary on vacation,
I was deputed to the Marketing department to assist theGeneral Manager, Mr. Louis Du Preez. I am very thankful to
Mr. Louis for being patient with me and he gave me good tips
and direction to complete my tasks with the least possible
time.
Over the few weeks I was doing the tasks as an employeeother than being a trainee. In just 2 months time I felt like I
got real hands-on work experience than a mere training and
more importantly I became self confident that I can build my
career in a top and reputed company like Oman Cables. The
environment, advanced systems and friendly employees of
different nationalities has truly made Oman Cables a place to

Finally, I thank all the employees for their support in successfully
completing my training at Oman Cables. I remain grateful to

PVC Plant
Polyvinyl chloride or PVC was first
created by the German chemist
Eugen Baumann in 1872.
Eugen Baumann never
applied for a patent.
Polyvinyl chloride or PVC
was never patented until
1913 when German,
Friedrich Klatte invented
a new method of the
polymerization of vinyl
chloride using sunlight.
Friedrich Klatte became
the first inventor to
receive a patent for PVC.
However, no really useful
purpose for PVC was
found until Waldo Semon came along
and made PVC a better product.
In 1926, Waldo Lonsbury Semon
was working for the B.F. Goodrich
Company in the United States as
a researcher, when he invented
plasticized polyvinyl chloride.
Waldo Semon had been trying to
dehydrohalogenate polyvinyl chloride
in a high boiling solvent in order to
obtain an unsaturated polymer that
could bond rubber to metal.
PVC is a thermoplastic material, ie.
softened by heating and hardened by
cooling, some were used for special
applications during the Second
World War but it was not until the
early 1950s that PVC came into widespread use for electric cables.
It is an ideal medium for low
voltage cables, as it is relatively
cheap compared to other insulating
materials.
A disadvantage is its electrical
withstanding strength and hence it
is used mainly for
Low voltage cable insulation.
PVC insulated cables
cannot be utilised to the
extent of XLPE insulated
cables, as the PVC will
soften and deform if the
temperature is too high, a
temperature of 120C
governs the maximum
degree of deformation
permissible in the time/temperature
range required for circuit protection
to operate. (XLPE 250C).
The maximum operating
temperature of 70C is determined
by the thermal ageing characteristics
of the material. There are however
special compounds available with
higher operating temperatures (eg.
PVC 105C), but due to
increase in cost these
are only used forspecial applications.
PVC is widely used as
bedding and serving
materials on all types
of cables.
The basic unit that is repeated in
the PVC chain is:-
--CH2--CH
Cl
PVC cannot be extruded on its own
without the addition of materials
which aid processing, eg. plasticisers
and lubricants. Other additions
required to produce PVC for electrical
applications are fillers and stabilisers.
The fillers are not only diluents
(diluting agents) but increase the
resistance of the compound to hot
deformation.
The whole formulation is optimised for
mechanical and electrical properties,
ease of processing and cost. Other
additions can also be used to achieve
special properties. e.g. low smoke,
fire retardant, rodent proof, etc.PVC is applied to cable by an extrusion
process. Pellets (granules) of the

Pros and Cons of Solid versus Stranded Aluminum Conductors
The Team
Stranded Aluminum Conductor Solid Aluminum Conductor
1. Stranded Conductors are larger in size than Solid conductors. This results in a cable with a larger outer diameter and the usage
of more insulating, bedding, armouring and sheathing materials.
1. Solid Conductors are smaller in size than Stranded conductors. Thisresults in a cable with a smaller outer diameter and the usage of less
insulating, bedding, armouring and sheathing materials.2. Outer surface of a stranded conductor is not as smooth asa solid conductor, resulting in a higher electrical stress. This isgenerally not a problem for low voltage cables.
2. Outer surface of a solid conductor is smoother thsn strandedconductor, resulting in a lower electrical stress.
3. Stranded conductors are more flexible than solid conductors. The larger sizes are easier to install than cables with solidconductors.
3. Solid conductors are less flexible than stranded conductors. The largerthe conductor cross-sectional area the more rigid the cable becomesand the harder it is to install.
4. Stranded conductors are less susceptible to fatigue cracking. 4. Solid conductors are more susceptible to fatigue cracking.
5. No occurrence of Bullet nose breaks. 5. Susceptible to Bullet nose breaks.
6. Stranded conductors have a larger current rating than solidconductors due to its lower skin effect.
6. Solid conductors have a lower current rating than stranded conductorsdue to its higher skin effect.
7. Aluminum in stranded conductors is harder than in solid
conductors due to work hardening during the drawing process.
7. Aluminum in solid conductors is softer than in stranded conductors. This
is a disadvantage on small sizes of solid conductor cables as conductors canstretch during the manufacturing process, or if installed without due care.
8. A stranded conductor can be rounded with pliers to fit into acircular lug or ferrule.
8. A solid conductor requires special shaped lugs or ferrules.

Our value creators
The high number of bobbins used
in the building wire lines has always
been an issue as they have to move
from machine to machine. This gives
the floor an impression of disorder
and untidiness. When
the filled bobbins are
placed incorrectly, they
have the probabilities of
damaging the products
on the bobbins when
the flange of one bobbin
hits the product on theother bobbin when
they are moved around,
resulting in scrap being
generated.
Mr. Khalid Bharwani
suggested to store the
bobbins in rail channels
as shown in the picture.
This brought a change
in the appearance of
the factory floor, it
was neat and orderly.
Also damages to the
products on the bobbin
were eliminated.
The pictures below is
showing you the before and after
effect of this system.
The output on bunching machines
has been achieved the highest ever
in the month of July 2009 with
31040kms of bunched wires. This
is a straight 13% increase over the
2008 average and 2% increase over
the previous best of Oct 08.
Mr. Mohsin Nasser, who was the
kingpin, took it as a challenge and
drove his team members and
successfully set new record of
reaching highest production of
bunching wires.
AfterBefore
Drum Stopper from XLPE ScrapIn the XLPE insulation line, during
the start up operation XLPE head
waste scrap was being generated.
This was about 7tons
as scrap disposed into
municipal waste bins.
Our operators from 150
Maillefe-15Ton line came
up with a suggestion to
convert this XLPE head
waste scrap into some
thing useful. They made
steel half round moulds
and colourful half round blocks to
be used as drum stoppers.
Earlier wooden blocks or any piece
of junk used as drum stoppers. The
wooden block would have a very
short usage life as they
would get damaged.
The XLPE drum stoppers
could be used many times
thus saving on usage of
wood and by this way a
wastage converted to a
useful item.

Wadis in Oman are great because there is often water. Where there is water, there is lush
green, shade and relaxation. The Wadi Dayqah area has a lot of it, water, green, a beautiful
setting and on top of that a bit of interesting geology. The area is easy to get to from Muscat;only about 100 km from the Hatat roundabout at Mutrah which includes 45km rough road

Providing good quality food to the

helped to address the
food problem. After

My efforts did not go unnoticed and

This elevation and recognition has
a positive influence on my career at

Feel Good
Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities
no doubt crept in. Forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely
and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. This day is all that is good and fair.
It is too dear, with its hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on yesterdays.
