FunctionsofNephron:

i. Filtration:FiltrationofbloodtakesplaceinBowman’scapsulefromthecapillaries

ofglomerulus.Thistakesplaceunderhighpressure.Thefiltratepassesintothe

tubularpartofthenephron.Thisfiltratecontainsglucose,aminoacids,urea,uric

acid,saltsandmajoramountofwater.

ii. SelectiveReabsorption:Asthefiltrateflowsalongthetubule,usefulsubstances

suchasglucose,aminoacids,saltsandwaterareselectivelyreabsorbedintothe

bloodbycapillariessurroundingthenephrontubule.Theamountofwater

reabsorbeddependsontheneedofthebodyandalsoontheamountofwastesto

beexcreted.

iii. Tubularsecretion:Certainsubstanceswhichareharmfulandnotneededbythe

bodylikeammonia,potassium,creatinineandhydrogenionsaresecretedfrom

thecapillarybloodintothelumenofdistaltubule.Thisiscalledtubularsecretion.
