“This is My Fathers World”
Prayer for Fathers (together)Heavenly Father, we come to give thanks for the men in our
lives that have guided us, protected us, taught us, sacrificed for
us and loved us. Men like these are called fathers. Some by
blood, some by choice, some by calling and some by need. For
those who could not or would not fulfill this relationship in our
lives, we ask forgiveness for them. For those who have gone on
to glory, we remember them. For those in our lives now, we obey
your commandment to honor them. And for those who never
knew a kind and loving father, we ask that you reveal yourself
to them, that they might find those qualities in you and be
blessed. In the Name of your Son Jesus, through the power of
your Holy Spirit, Amen.
Passing the Peace The Peace of the Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us greet our neighbors and extend God’s peace to each other

The Scripture Lessons
Romans 5: 1-5 (NIV)
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained
access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in
the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our
sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us
to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
John 16: 12-15 (NIV)
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But
when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he
will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me
that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to
the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me
what he will make known to you.”
Genesis 1: 1-5 (NIV)
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth
was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and
the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be
light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he
separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the
darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was
morning—the first day.

HERE’S THE SCOOPAPPALACHIAN SERVICE PROJECT - Mile of Pennies - We made it. Last week's
oversized jug of pennies put us over the top giving us a total of $857 . . .Amen! Thanks
to all who contributed. This will be the final Sunday for the coin jugs for this year.
Please keep saving your loose change as we will re-start this effort early next year.
Snacks and notes - If you would like to donate snacks (individual bags of chips,
raisins, slim Jims, trail mix, homemade cookies, etc.) there will a box labeled ASP in the
foyer until we depart on June 22. Something else that is meaningful during ASP trips
are words of encouragement from folks back home. If you would like to provide
personal notes, short scriptures, etc., they would be most appreciated.
Prayers and Thanks - We ask for your continued prayers as we make our final
preparations for the first trip and send our sincere thank you for all the spiritual,
emotional and financial support you have provided.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL - This year VBS will be held from July 8-12 from 9:00 AM
- 12:00 PM. The theme is ROAR: Life is Wild, God is Good! The children will rotate to
stations, such as Imagination Station, Music, Snack, Games, Kid Vid Cinema and Bible
Story. The Sanctuary will be transformed into a jungle as well as the classrooms and
the special activities. Children who will be four years old by Sept. 1, 2019 through fifth
grade (just completed) are welcome. Close to 30 adults and 20 youth will be helping
during the week! I need 1 more Crew Leader, who will simply guide a small group of
children from station to station. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Julie
Robbins (301-752-1747 or [email protected]). Registration forms are
located in the preschool office, church narthex or church office OR online on the church
website (www.laplataumc.org). The cost of VBS is $10 per child with a family cap of
$20 for more than two children. You can pay online via Vanco on the church website
(VBS Registration), or by check or cash with a paper registration. You will need a form
for each child.
FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY - Did you know that 89% of the people in a typical
American congregation don't have a financial safety net? Shocked? But there's HOPE!
And that hope is Financial Peace University. FPU is a nine-lesson course taught by
Dave Ramsey and his team of financial experts. With FPU, you will master how to
handle money using biblical wisdom and common sense. Through life-changing
videos, online tools and resources, and group accountability, you will learn how to
create and stay within a budget, save for emergencies, pay off debt, retirement,
insurance, and investments. Just imagine the impact we could have on the community
if we were all debt-free! Marriages and families would be strengthened. People would
be freed up to be outrageously generous. This kind of hope will ignite change in our
entire community!
Weekly classes will begin on Sun, Sept 22nd from 7:00-8:30PM through Sun, Nov
17th. The cost is $109.00 per family unit including teenagers still living at home. If
you have already taken the class in the past and just need a refresher, you can take
it again for free!
If you have any questions before then, please contact John or Sherri Hastings at
240-299-9487 or [email protected]. Come join us and learn to "live like no
one else, so that later, you can live like no one else!"
PREACHER’S POP-UP PRAYER - Thanks for all the submissions recently for the name
of our new mid-week "check-in" on Facebook Live. This "pop-up prayer" moment will
consist of a small devotional and a time of prayer, with requests for prayer welcomed
in real time. A brief word, a brief prayer for a brief time. Consider it a pop-up for a
spiritual pick-me-up! Mark your calendars now! Preacher's Pop-Up Prayer will be
Thursdays at 7pm beginning on June 27th and running throughout the summer. Tune
in and comment so we will know you are watching!
THE NAME OF THE GAME - For the last few months, folks from La Plata Church have
been working on a project which some might call a fundraiser, but, in reality, is much,
much, more! Our church has contracted with a company to create and produce a board
game about the uniqueness of La Plata Md. it is called, originally enough, La
Plata-Opoly! Designed similarly to Monopoly games, this game is dedicated to the
places that are uniquely La Platian! Of course, La Plata UMC is figured prominently in
the game. As stated earlier, this is not just a game but a remembrance for those who
have moved away - an educational tool for our kids to understand the rich components
that make up their town. A creative and unique gift to those who know La Plata and
a symbol of pride about the place in which we live, work and play. Even the proceeds
we receive as a result of this project will not be for La Plata Church alone but for the
furtherance of the ministries and mission to which we are called and for new ways we
can be the Church in this uncertain world. Though the game will not be unveiled until
fall, we want you to know and spread the word about this unique and singular
opportunity!
WORSHIPWORSHIP SCHEDULE - The Sunday morning worship schedule is: Café Worship at
8:00 AM in Fellowship Hall 2, and Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary at 10:00 AM.
NURSERY IS AVAILABLE - Nursery care for little ones (ages 0-4 yrs) is available during
the 10:00 Sunday morning service. If your little one becomes unsettled and is in need
of more care, please contact an usher who can direct you to the nursery or to the
rocking chairs in the back. We are grateful to the staff and volunteers that help us
provide a nursery each week.
If you are a parent or a grandparent of young children, or you just want to spend
some time with the youngest in our congregation, consider signing up to volunteer in
the Nursery. To volunteer, or for information, contact Alyssa Wheeler at
HEARING ASSIST DEVICES - are available, please see an usher to obtain one.
SERVICE & CARINGFOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP - The Food Pantry is requesting your donations of
the following items, grape jelly, canned peaches, pears, mandarin oranges,
applesauce, (no peel off cups please), pasta meal bags, baked beans, soups,
children's juice boxes, snack items for kids (individual wrapped cookies, cheese
crackers etc.). You may place your donated items in the Food Donation Box in the front
entrance. Pet food donations are always appreciated. You can also make monetary
donations, just write "Food Pantry" in the memo line of your check, or give online.
FAITH SHARINGPLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS - It is the simplest and most effective way to share
Christ with others: just invite your friends to church with you. Most people who grew
up as Christians and who aren't in a church say they just haven't found a church they
like, and because no one has invited them. Most people if you ask, will say yes to an
invitation. Just ask them to come to church for a special event, or special Sunday, or
to hear a sermon you think will help them.
ADMINISTRATIONPRAYER LIST - The bulletin prayer list page has been updated. If you have any
questions, or would like to add someone to the prayer list, please call Karen in the
church office.
STEWARDSHIP - Please be sure that the outer doors close firmly and are locked when
you leave the building. Turn out the lights when you leave a room. Turn off the
heat/air conditioner in the room you are using. These are all things we can do to keep
our building secure, our members safe, and our operating costs down.
ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL - The next Administrative Council meeting will be held
on Tuesday, June 25 at 7:30 in Fellowship Hall 2. Everyone is encouraged and
welcome to attend.
RECYCLED CHRISTMAS - Please call the church office to schedule an appointment to
drop off your Christmas Recycle donations. All donations must be placed in the attic.
A Father's Eyes
Jonathan's mother died when he was very young and his father brought him up.
Both of them shared a very special relationship. Jonathan loved to play football
and his father made sure that he was always there to cheer his son at every match,
even if Jonathan wasn't a part of the playing team. Jonathan being small sized,
wasn't allowed to play in the main team. Nevertheless, he continued with his
practice with full determination. Everyone thought that Jonathan would never be
able to make it into the team, though somehow, his determination carried him
through. The coach seeing his diligence and dedication decided to keep him on the
roster.
One day during practice, the coach met him with a telegram. Jonathan was
shocked to read the message contained in it. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the
coach, "My father died this morning. Will it be all right if I miss practice today?"
The coach gently put his arm around his shoulder and said, "Take the rest of the
week off, son, and don't even plan to come to the game on Saturday." On the day
of the game, Jonathan's college team was losing badly to the rival team. The coach
and the players had all lost hope when they saw Jonathan coming towards them.
Jonathan ran up to the coach and pleaded him to allow him to play this match. At
first, the coach wouldn't allow him to play. However after a lot of persuasion, the
coach gave in. No sooner Jonathan joined the team in the field, their scores started
to improve before both the teams were on a tie.
However, the real cheer came during the crucial closing seconds when he
intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. His team
members were ecstatic. The crowd came running towards him to celebrate the win.
After the match, the coach went up to Jonathan, who was seated alone in the
corner of the locker room and asked, "Kid, I can't believe it. You were fantastic! Tell
me what got into you? How did you do it?" He looked at the coach, with tears in
his eyes, and said, "Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad
was blind?" The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, "Dad came to all
my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to
show him I could do it!"
