MUDRA
The census in 2011 revealed that over 26
million people in India (2.1% of the total population)
have some kind of disability. The speech impaired
people account for 7.68% of the total disabled people.
These segments of society suffer in their day to day life
as they are unable to communicate or express
effectively. The usual mode of their communication is
through hand gestures and symbols which is often
misunderstood or ridiculed by the general public as
they are not aware of them. This devoid has certainly
hampered speech impaired people of their normal life
and are isolated with social insecurities.
In a vision to bridge the gap between normal and
speech disabled people; 4 B-Tech students under
Amrita Robotics Research Lab (ARRL) have devised a
wearable glove “MUDRA” upholding the social driven
values of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. This team at
ARRL has come up with the first working prototype
and the demonstrator is as shown in the figure below.

The glove converts the hand gestures to voice output.
It’s economical with the cost of the prototype is
approximately INR 7500 and the team has worked for
over 4 months in this regard.

The glove in its present form can recognize numbers
from one to ten and “Indian Sign Language” gestures
of words like morning, good, thank you, night.. to
name a few. It is now in the advance development and
refinement stage of its production cycle. The team has
started to validate its social feasibility and the
preliminary results have proven to be very encouraging.
They are confident that it will be a reality in the near
future catering to the needs of the speech impaired
people and encourage them to have a normal life with
more ease. Also, the team exudes that the glove is more
versatile and can be interfaced with medical
instruments to benefit remote operation, used as input

aerospace related disciplines and R&D at NAL.
The main focus was on the role of power
electronics in the evolution of electrical systems in
the aircrafts. Mr. Saikiran also covered the
standards used for an aircraft electrical power
generation and distribution system. Alongside, a
research work in power electronics carried at NAL
was elaborated and he shared some insight
information regarding internships and work
opportunities at NAL with the students. It was
indeed a session to gain knowledge about the
electrical system employed in aircrafts.
Seminar titled “Propulsion Equipment for

A workshop on ‘Puppet Training’ was
conducted on 8th, 9
th and 10
th of July, 2016. Gitamritam
students from various campus of Amrita Vishwa
Vidyapeetham participated in this workshop.
The workshop was organised by Dhyanamrita
Chaitanya Swami and
Mr. Shankar Kumaran.
The trainers were from
Kerala who are practicing
the puppet tradition in
temples even now with
200 year old puppets.
Director Br. Dhanraj
Swami and Associate Dean, Dr. Rakesh S.G..
complimented the trainers for their play on Ramayana.
The motto of the workshop is to spread the message of
BHAGAVAD GITA across various schools and
colleges by means of puppet shows and to bring back
our old tradition of puppet shows. In the due course of
the workshop, students have learned to make puppets
and to run a play with puppets. Also, there are few
upgradations done by the students to the old practices
like added background music, used modern characters,
improved lightings and made puppets out of card-
boards.
The students participated with full dedication and m
ade the workshop a success and therefore helped in
carrying out the message of Gita to various upcoming
generations. Few students who came to watch the play
of puppets by Gitamritam students were surprised and
amazed about the play and they showed interest to be
part of this workshop in future.
