‘RASE 14’ - National Level Robotic Fest
APRIL 2014 PAGE 1
„Amrita Club for Robotics and Mechatronics‟ of ASE-Bengaluru achieved yet another
unprecedented milestone by conducting the School‟s first National-level Robotic Fest, - RASE‟14
(Robodeum@ASE) - on 28th Feb‟14 & 1st March‟14, which turned out to be a grand success.
RASE‟14 was an exhilarating and power packed Robotics fest with four exciting events –
„Robo Wars‟, „Line Follower Challenge‟, „Death Race‟ and „Bi-Ped Lifo‟. All the four events
saw enthusiastic participation by students from both within and outside the School. Around 60
teams took part in the various events and won prizes worth more than Rs. 80000/-.
The fest commenced with the Line Follower (LiFo) challenge, which was inaugurated in
the presence of Director Br. Dhanraj, Associate Dean Dr. Rakesh S.G., Fest Director Dr. T.S.B.
Sudarshan, Chair-ME Dr. Nagaraja S.R. and Chair-ECE Dr. Shikha Tripathi with zeal and
enthusiasm.
A total of 24 teams (96 students) participated in the Line follower event which consisted
of three rounds, where the intelligence of robots were put to test through various obstacles,
intersections and surprise challenges in the competition arena. Team „SUDO‟ from Adi Shankara
Institute of Engineering and Technology, Team „Cuttle Fish‟ from Amrita School of Engineering,
Bengaluru and Team „BOT-US‟ from Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru bagged the first,
second and third prizes respectively in the event.

Death Race, conducted in the hostel open grounds stirred up the zealous atmosphere of the
fest with a new vivacious energy as 22 teams got all set to win the death race championship title.
Robots raced their way through various challenging traps and hindrances on the track like water
pits, inclinations, grease etc., and the fastest and toughest robot that outstripped all the hurdles
won the winner‟s title. Team UBE from Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru, Team Serial
Killers from MIT (Puducherry) and Team Legends from Amrita School of Engineering,
Bengaluru won the first, second and third prizes in this event.
Energy levels were very high with the onset of the fest‟s third event, Robo Wars, which
presented an open battlefield for a one-on-one battle of the bots. Sparks flew and gears ground as
the awe-struck crowd watched the fierce combat of Robots armed with dynamic weapons. A total
of 12 teams participated in the event and Team „Serial Killers‟ from MIT (Puducherry), Team
„Optimus Prime‟ from SMVEC (Puducherry) and Team „Manmade‟ from MVJ College of
Engineering, Bengaluru won the first, second and third prizes respectively.

For a climax that could not have been better, RASE‟14 saw the fourth & last event - the
„Bi-Ped Lifo Challenge‟. This was an entirely new event and therefore was greeted with a lot of
excitement and eagerness. It integrated the line following challenge with the stability challenge
faced by a Bi-Ped Robot. Four Bi-Peds took part in this race to the finish line, while following the
black line on the track. Team „Quebert‟ from Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru and Team
„Rochi‟ Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru won the first and consolation prizes
respectively.

Finally, packed with plentiful entertainment, RASE‟14 came to its close with the
distribution of prizes to the winners by Dr. Rakesh S.G., Dr. T.S.B. Sudarshan and Dr. Nagaraja
S.R.
The fest turned out to be a grand success and the amount of participation in all the events
was very encouraging. Apart from the various teams within the college, 8 teams from other
colleges such MVJ College of Engineering Bengaluru, CMRIT Bengaluru, SMVEC Puducherry,
Adi Shankara Institute of Engineering and Technology Kerala, PESIT Bengaluru and MIT
Puducherry, also participated in the fest with enthusiasm. At the end of the day, RASE‟14
successfully accomplished its goal of bringing out the hidden potential of young roboticists,
developing competitive and team spirit among them and furthering their interest to go ahead in
this fascinating field to achieve bigger milestones of success. of Engineering and Technology Kerala, PESIT Bangalore and MIT Puducherry, also participated in the fest with z

environment and to sensitize them regarding
issues concerning the environment. The
following events were held as part of this
event under the guidance of Dr. Neetu
Srivastava, Mentor of the club:
„No plastic day‟ was celebrated in the
campus on 7th April, 2014 in order to
reduce the usage of plastic in the
campus. About 15 student volunteers
worked on 5th and 6th of April, 2014 and
made about 120 paper bags and decorative
items. All the paper bags were distributed
in the cafeteria and canteen where usage
of plastic covers was rampant.
Visit to an orphanage was organized on
8th April, 2014. A group of 20 members
visited an orphanage named „Thayimane‟
on Sarjapur Road to educate people
regarding environmental issues. They were briefed on issues like reducing usage of energy
consumption, pollution etc. At the end of the day, the student volunteers planted a couple of
saplings and requested the inmates to protect and nourish the plants.

„Earth Hour‟ was observed in the school on 9th April, 2014. „Earth Hour‟ is voluntary
switching-off of the lights for one hour, in order to show the effectiveness of energy
conservation. On this day, from 6.30 PM to 7.30 PM, students united together and switched-
off the lights voluntarily. „Abhinaya‟, the drama club of the school also supported the event,
by staging a street play emphasizing on conservation of energy and the event was a grand
success.
The last and most interesting event of the „ECO WEEK‟ celebrations, was the guest lecture
by two eminent speakers Mr. Yellappa Reddy, a Retired Forest Officer and Mr. Sunil Kumar
an expert in the field of Biotechnology. The students had wonderful interaction with them
regarding ecological imbalances and also on conservation of biodiversity. Mr. Yellappa
Reddy, who has nearly 20 years of experience in the forest department spoke about forest
ecology system. He shared his experiences as a Forest Officer, his love for nature and the
deterioration of bio-diversity witnessed by him over the recent years. Mr. Sunil Kumar, who
is a Researcher, exhibited various species of ants and presented interesting facts about their
behavior, survival etc.

A new method of classifying satellite images into different categories such as
forest, desert, river etc., with the help of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and unsupervised
learning method using MATLAB is presented. Dense low-level feature descriptors are
extracted and exploited in a novel way to learn a set of basis functions. The low-level
feature descriptors are encoded in terms of the basis functions to generate new sparse
representation for the feature descriptors. We pool these sparse features by simple
averaging and show that this method will help us to choose SVM classifier which is having
less cost. Experimental results show its good performance, when tested with different
saliency criteria, such as accuracy, less computational time, and the combination of both.
