ORIGINAL IRISHFRIGHT NIGHT

LOOKS COULD CHILL . . . masked Puca festival character

AS claims go, it is a bold one.We may all think Halloween is aStateside import but the BoyneValley, on Ireland’s east coast,is pitching itself as the REALbirthplace of the fright-fest.

This year it plays hosts to therst annual Puca festival, which celebrates the origins ofHalloween in Ireland.

The festival wants you toforget customs as you knowthem, such as trick-or-treatingand apple bobbing.

Instead, you are encouragedto get back to the true meaningof why we celebrated it inthe rst place – honouring thedead and welcoming in thenew season.

Puca is a Gaelic word, whichtranslates as “ghost”.

It is also the name of one ofseveral mythological charac-ters that will be brought to lifein the three-day event betweenOctober 31 and November 2 atthree historic locations: Trim,Drogheda and Athboy, allwithin easy reach of Dublin.

It kicks o with the lighting ofthe Samhain Fires in Athboy, atradition dating back thou-sands of years when druidswould light res to signify thatthe forces of winter and deathwere conquered.

Next, the spirits will gothrough the streets of Trim andup to the ramparts of Trim Cas-tle, used as the location forYork Castle in Mel Gibson’sblockbuster movie Braveheart.

The castle is brought to lifeevery night with digital projec-tions and live music.

A Puca-themed food andcraft market also keeps yourappetite satised.

The gorgeous Trim CastleHotel, where we stayed, is astone’s throw from the actionand has amazing views of thecastle from its rooftop bar. But

if the Halloween festivities donot tickle your fancy, BoyneValley still has plenty to oer, including Newgrange, amounded tomb made from200,000 tons of rock and saidto predate both the Great Pyra-mid of Giza and Stonehenge.

If, like me, you fancy yourselfas a bit of a gin acionado, then Listoke Gin School is rightup your alley.

It is just north of Droghedaand the only gin school in Ire-land, oering the chance tocreate your very own tipple aswell as sampling Listoke’sbrands, (£82pp).

Meanwhile, whiskey isn’t theonly native spirit of Ireland, asyou’ll nd if you dare to visit the£38million distillery in Slane. Itis in the grounds of Slane Cas-tle and also oers tours. Anddon’t miss the Hill of Slane andruins of the friary church.

While the Puca festival issure to tempt many for thethrills and chills, with so muchelse to appeal alongside thatlegendary Irish hospitality, youwill be staying for the craic.
