WHAT IS JULISHA MOBILE.
Julisha Mobile is a blended learning environment that combines face-to-
face mentorship with a mobile platform. The objective of Julisha Mobile is
both a mentorship programme and a project-based technical online course
designed to empower girls living in disadvantaged communities in Nairobi
Kenya.
WHO IS JULISHA MOBILE FOR?
Girls aged 14 - 20, from Kibera and Baba Dogo, slum
areas in Nairobi, Kenya.

THE CYCLE OF POVERTY
Girls growing up in the slums of Kibera and Baba
Dogo live in a cycle of poverty. Although some
finish school, many marry at a young age and do
not complete their schooling. Others continue
with their education, but do not have career
support. They have few positive role models as
they are surrounded by others struggling to
survive.
WHY DO WE NEED JULISHA MOBILE ?
ISOLATION:LACK OF COMMUNITY
according to a needs analysis: "girls lacked a safe forum in local communities and
institutions to get answers to the important questions in
their lives."

FUTURE UNKNOWNTechnical and vocational training in Kenya
focusses on male-dominated careers. In
addition, OECD 2009 indicates that 90%
of work in Africa is in the informal sector
with a predominance of self-employment.
Most young women will never have
formal employment.

Julisha Mobile is face-to-face mentoring connecting disadvantaged young women with mentors and role models.Julisha Mobile is also a mobile platform to support these young women by providing forums and information on role model's life stories and careers.
Julisha Mobile curates freely available resources and tools into a central hub (mobile phone) that girls and mentors can use to communicate and to undertake their projects.
Some content is preloaded and can be accessed off-line while other resources are linked directly from the phone but will need an internet connection.
Existing platforms like MIXIT will provide an online forum environment and sms can be used for off-line communication between groups and mentors.

Gilly Salmon's model is a
structured online learning model
which gradually builds skills and
experiences from novice to
mastery.

JULISHA MOBILE | PEDAGOGICAL MODEL : 1. STRUCTURED LEARNING
Julisha Mobile uses two different pedagogical models. One is a structured learning approach; the other is an open exploratory project based process.
JULISHA MOBILE | PEDAGOGICAL MODEL 2 : PROJECT BASED LEARNING
Project based learning begins with a compelling question; engages and empowers participants to work both collaboratively and autonomously, and results in a unique and practical solution.
JULISHA MOBILE | REWARD & RECOGNITION SYSTEM
Participants will not pay for the programme. They will have to commit their time and to show a positive contribution or else forfeit their place.Participants will be rewarded with badges as they complete tasks and reach goals. Upon graduation they could train to become Julisha Mobile facilitators.
JULISHA MOBILE | ASSESSMENT
SELF ASSESSMENTSmall projects will be created for the girls to learn career-related skills.Progress will be self-assessed against checklists and quizzes through the mobile phone. These will be assessed per project.
FACILITATOR ASSESSMENT During face-to-face interactions with facilitators, participants will measure their own progress and provide evidence of their growth and competence in their journals.
PEER ASSESSMENTThe learners assess each other's projects, developing further critical thinking and writing skills.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTLearners earn badges for goals reached and build a portfolio of assignments completed. The learners create a large final project in groups in which their new skills are tested, the learners have a say in what kind of project they would like to work on, eg. Starting a small business together / Publishing an ebook or online magazine together / Creating a community initiative together.
JULISHA MOBILE | DESIGNS FOR A MOBILE PLATFORM
We aim to create a user-friendly interface that
builds on existing user experience design protocols
for mobile interfaces.
This might be the first time our participants engage
with technology and we aim to create an
environment that will easily scaffold them into
exploring other technologies.
1. The interface and software will be preloaded onto
mobile phones provided for the learning program.
2. A level of customisation will be possible for the user,
a login with password protection and a personal profile.
3. Some content and functionality will work offline.
4. Extra functionality accessed online.
5. Built in help function.
JULISHA MOBILE | DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
JULISHA MOBILE | BUSINESS MODEL
FUNDING &SUSTAINABILITY
Julisha Mobile will operate as a non-profit business model, and will source funding from corporate organizations, as well as non-profits such as the Commonwealth of Learning.
The participants will not pay for the programme, but will commit to being present and active during sessions, or they will forfeit their places on the course.
A percentage of earnings made from the participants' projects will also be invested back into the Julisha Mobile programme.
The programme could also generate revenue by linking participants with potential employers, a service that would be paid for by the employers.
To ensure sustainability, Julisha Mobile will be continually monitored and evaluated.
