protects the health of our families, communities, local economy and natural heritage.
We have a proud tradition in Vaughan of championing sustainability. It plays an integral role in our Service Excellence Strategy, and we are committed to addressing local environmental issues and working together to ensure an even better, more sustainable city for the future.
I would like to thank you – our residents – for your dedication to our waste reduction programs. We recognize and appreciate the effort you make to decrease the amount of garbage that is going to landfill.
This calendar provides valuable information about recycling programs, green bin collection, leaf and yard waste, and what to do if you miss a pick up. You will also find tips to help reduce waste. I encourage you to use it and to continue making our city a greener place for tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua, PC Mayor

of recycling grass clippings
by leaving them on the lawn
and allowing them to break
down naturally.
Why grasscycle?
• It saves time• It improves lawn quality• It conserves water because the clippings hold moisture in your lawn• It’s a free and natural fertilizer containing essential plant nutrients• It benefits the environment and reduces yard waste

The Magic of VinegarCleaners and detergents are considered household hazardous waste. Instead of using harmful chemicals to clean floors, counters, walls and appliances, why not consider an alternative solution?
Vinegar is a non-toxic, effective method for killing mould, bacteria and germs and can be used in every room in the house. Just mix with water and wipe away – vinegar for the win!
GOOD TO KNOW: Home or hardware stores carry garbage bins in varying sizes. The standard 190-litre (50 gallon) and 120-litre (32 gallon) bins are not acceptable garbage containers for curbside pickup. Opt for the 75-litre (20 gallon) bin.120 litres

DOUBLE-UP DAYSQuick Tips To Keep Our Waste Collectors SafeOur waste collectors lift thousands of bags and bins each day. They face risks if garbage is not disposed of properly and need your help to make their job safer:
• Use proper containers• Don’t make containers too heavy• Safely package and label broken glass and sharp objects• Make sure your waste can be safely reached• Dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW) at the designated depot at 2840 Rutherford Rd.
Following these guidelines will allow our collectors to do their jobs quickly and avoid injury.
Take advantage of Double-Up Days to dispose of up to six items of garbage on your designated garbage collection day without the need for paid garbage tags. The 13-item maximum still applies during Double-Up Days. Refer to the colour zone map at the back of the calendar to determine which week applies to you.

Almost all of this material can be reused or repurposed by local organizations and recyclers — everything from clothing and old socks to backpacks and curtains.
These items are valuable resources for local charitable organizations. Many offer a free home pick-up service, including the Canadian Diabetes Association, Ontario Federation for Cerebral Palsy and the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Just make sure your donation is clean, dry and odourless.
You can also…• Host a clothing swap among friends and neighbours• Offer items for sale or giveaway on
online forums like Kijiji, Craigslist or Freecycle
• Use local clothing drop-off bins located at various locations in the community

MYTH:
Running hot water and soap or degreasers down the drain with fats, oils or grease will stop it from hardening inside the pipe.
FACT:
Water and oil do not mix. Fats, oils and grease will eventually cool and harden in the pipe causing a blockage. The use of enzymes, bacteria, solvents, hot water or other chemicals to facilitate the passage of oil and grease in sewers is illegal in York Region.
MYTH:
Flushing fats, oils and grease down the toilet won’t clog pipes.
FACT:
Wastewater from every toilet, drain, shower, kitchen sink, dishwasher, laundry sink or bathtub is connected to a single sewer pipe from your residence. All wastewater ends up in the same sewer pipe.
MYTH:
Pouring fats, oils and grease down the drain is acceptable as long as a food waste grinder (ie: garburator) is used.
FACT:
A food waste grinder grinds up items before passing them into your sewer pipes. It does not break down fats, oils and grease. In fact, food waste contributes to clogged pipes as well. It’s better to screen out food particles before they go down the drain.
DID YOU KNOW?SCRAPE THE DISHESBEFORE YOU WASH.
FATS, OILS OR GREASE
DON’T POUR
DOWN THE DRAIN.
Fats, oils and grease can have a serious impact on your home and the environment. When poured down the sink, drain or toilet, they can clog your pipes and our sewers.
Fats, oils and grease are byproducts of cooking, including: butter and margarine, cooking oils (including deep frying oils), meat fats, salad dressings, sauces, gravies, shortening and lard. PROPER Disposal • Fats, oils and grease are organic waste that belong in your green bin• Wait for fats, oils and grease to cool and harden, then scrape into the green bin• Use a small amount of paper towel to help wipe and absorb the liquid before placing
it in your green bin• Liquid cooking oil can also be dropped off in a tightly sealed container, no more than
four litres in size, at a York Region waste depot to be recycled into biodiesel
Cool it, scrape it, green bin it. visit york.ca/fog
