Happy New You in 2020, ROCK Sydney Readers!
The Year of Emerging Leaders merupakan tema utama tahun 2020.

Tabernakel, tempat hadirat Tuhan.
FROM MOSES TO JOSHUAPerintah Tuhan kepada Yosua untuk merebut tanah Kanaan.

6
M A I N S E E DM A I N S E E D
Musa baru saja mati.
Amin.

I N T E R A C T I V E
I do not know all the details that is going on in your life but I know that many of us face uncertainty as we enter 2020. I have a good news for you. God wants to say to you, “Be
strong and courageous for the LORD your God is with you.” How can we be strong and courageous?
Trust God’s promises
In Joshua 1, Joshua has yet to begin his conquest. The war has not begun. But when God makes his promise to Joshua, he says that “I have given to you.” Even before the conquest began, God has al-ready won. God has guaranteed the land to Josh-ua. Sure, there are many wars to come but before even a single war breaks out, God wants Joshua to know that God has already given them the land. God never explains to Joshua how he is going to give him the Promised Land. God does not give Joshua “10 steps to conquer the Promised Land.” God does not give explanation but he always give promises. What Joshua needs is not step by step explanation but the promise of God. Christians, if we have the promises of God, we have no reason to fear. Whatever it is that we face, we can have courage because the God who made a promise is
the God who can be trusted.

Obey God’s commands
There is a major shift that is happening through the leadership of Joshua. In the leadership of Moses, God spoke to Moses face to face. Moses met God face to face and wrote everything that the Lord spoke. However, in Joshua’s leadership it is different. Joshua did not get to meet the Lord face to face. However, Joshua have the law of God that Moses wrote. And God is saying to Joshua, “I want you to obey everything that Moses have commanded you.” Joshua is the first leader in the Bible that has to rely on the written words of God. This put Joshua in the same place as us. Today, we don’t communicate with God face to face but through the Bible. Therefore, for us to be strong and courageous we need to obey the written words of God in the Bible. Are you unsure about which decision you should make in life? Are you uncertain about your next step in life? Obey the commands of God written in the Bible and you will
have good success.
Recognize God’s presence
Ultimately, Joshua will experience prosperity and success because the Lord is with Joshua. God promises Joshua that he will be with Joshua wherever he goes. In the mountain top, God will be with Joshua. In the valley low, God will be with Joshua. A lot of time, we try to look for courage in the wrong place. We’ve been taught to look within to find confidence. Courage is not found in looking to self but in looking to the one beside you: the LORD your God is with you. Are you finding yourself in the midst of uncertainty? It does not matter what uncertainties you face in life, you can be strong and have courage because the Lord is with you. Do not put your confidence in a person or a situation. But put your confidence in the sovereign God of heaven and earth who is with
you every step of the way.

As proud as we are with our kids that keeps
gaining a new life skills, it comes with the
aftermath mess and we as parents are the
one who need to clean it up on behalf of
them. Today was one of those days for us.
After I prepared cereal breakfast for my
toddler, I went for a shower. Not long after,
I heard a call from my toddler “Daddy,
Daddy”. I quickly went to living room and
found that he had finished his breakfast
and assumed that he can handle the 1L milk
bottle, in an attempt to top up the milk by
himself. I am all for kids learning new things
and providing room for maturing as they
grow. But, to find almost the whole bottle
of milk emptied to his breakfast bowls,
table, his clothes and more importantly on
carpet was not a mess that I prepared for
that morning.
10
I looked at the clock and it is about time that I needed to take him to day
care and then go to work. The mess and the pressure of time got to me
and I was about to unwisely scold him and discipline him for the mess that
he had created. In a second, right after he noticed my stunned presence,
with a soft voice he said “Daddy, I made a mistake”
The huge flame of rage inside of me was extinguished straight away and
the warmth of love just channel through my whole body. Then with a guilty
looks, he followed by “I am sorry Daddy”. At that point I was melting and
in turn feeling sorry for him that he has to go through this mess. I don’t
even care anymore about the milk that started to soak through the carpet.
I looked at him with a smile and said “Thank you for letting me know that
have honestly said ‘I made a mistake’. Thank you for saying sorry and its
ok as Daddy sometimes make mistakes too”. His guilty face are turning
into a wide glowing smile. He was so relieved and happy, he started to
gently smack his overflowed bowl of milk that start to cause more spills
and I was like “Don’t push it kid”.
Sometimes when we were sinning against God, we felt like that God does not love us anymore, He despises what we did and there is no way he would forgive us. So we would just hopelessly continue to live in sin as we already stuffed it up anyway. Know that as God’s children, your sin is never beyond God’s saving grace. Yes we messed up again and again. But all you need to do is say “God I made a mistake, I am sorry”. He will forgive you and he have cleaned your mess, by dying on the cross for you, because there is no way we would be able to clean up our own sinful mess. God loves you way more than you think!

You may think that the gospel is
just for unbelievers. But as I grow
spiritually, I realised that it’s true the
gospel surely covers a significant
moment of our salvation, but more
than that, it also reaches every single
moment of us moving forward in our
faith. Why? Because we are all sinners.
The Bible says the gospel is for both
unbelievers and believers. We need
the gospel equally, desperately. We
may have been Christians for years,
yet the battle with our sinful desires
still continue long after our conversion.
We’re still rude in frustrations and
anger. We’re impatience while we need
to wait long time.

C A M P U S / C A R E E R
It is allowing the Word to transform your
mind and help you to see everything in
your life through the person and work
of Christ. Without these moments, our
knowledge will never be translated into
personal experience and revelation of
Christ.
I often get so frustrated with certain
situations in my life that I almost loose
it. But the gospel gently reminds me
that the cure to my frustrations is not
whatever things that I’m after. The cure
to my frustration is Jesus. Everything in
this life changes, nothing is constant. Yet
God and His grace is always constant,
never changes at any season. The gospel
reminds us that there is God’s grace
available in the everyday moments of
our lives, even the hardest part. As
we preach to ourselves, we remember
again of what He has done for us on the
cross. If He has been so gracious and
faithful thus far, He will ever be gracious
and faithful in your days ahead. And in
the process of all this, life of continual
repentance, preaching the gospel to
yourself and experiencing Christ in your
own way, other people around you may
see the Lord.
We complain and grumble when things
don’t go our ways. We struggle badly
with envy and comparison with others.
The bottom line is, we are all sinners –
we are not better than our unbeliever
friends.
Yet, a life of a Christian is not a perfect
life, but indeed a life of continual
repentance. We need the gospel and its
grace for us to live this life. That’s why we
need to preach the gospel to ourselves
constantly. The gospel changes
everything. It reminds us of who God is
and what He has done. It offers us joyful
hope and purpose when we find none. It
calls us to find our identities and secure
our acceptance in Christ alone, not in
our accomplishment or circumstances.
The gospel helps us to see everything
through the person and work of Christ.
It points us constantly to the One
character of all – Jesus.
When life frustrates us, our first
response is to complain or throw an
adult tantrum. But would you realise
that these troubled times are wrapped
with His mercy? It is an invitation to learn
how to preach the gospel to yourself in
the midst of your circumstances.
The gospel helps us to see everything through the person and work of Christ. It points us constantly to the One character of all – Jesus.

BY JOSHUA FERNANDO
M Y S T O R Y
It started with a decision to study in Australia. Never I would have expected that this decision would have a major impact on my life. I arrived in Sydney in 2014 with a backpack and a piece of luggage. It was my first time living in a foreign country, by myself.
After trying out different events and societies, one day I was introduced to a community in UTS called BIG UTS. Through this community, I made friends, exposed myself to the bible and Christianity. Eventually, I started to be involved with the community. It felt like home.
My name is Josh, and I grew up in a non-Christian background family. In fact, we exercise many different beliefs in our house. I do have Christian as my religion in my ID, but no more than that.
I guess when I was introduced to the gospel and living out in a gospel community, I see something different from what other religions teach. It is such a joy to be able to learn the Word together, support, encourage and rebuke one another and grow together as a community. Long story short, I made the decision to follow Christ in 2015.
Now I lead MC City 02 and I am grateful for what God has put in our community. I may feel incapable, I may be a new Christian, new MC leader, and I will make lots of mistakes, but God strengthens me. My prayer is through this community people are pointed to Jesus. I believe God has designed us to live in a community, and He has a grand plan for each one of us through this community.
I cannot emphasize the importance of living in a gospel-community enough. So if you are not part of a gospel-community yet, I really hope my story can be another kick for you to start participating in a community. For those of you who feel not adding value in MC, remember that a simple “Hi” can change other’s life upside down and lead them to Jesus.
