Instructional Design Project: Edmodo 101
Edmodo has surfaced as a centralized learning environment for teachers to effectively
and efficiently provide access to resources, documents, and an overview of course content,
course standards, assessments, student work, reflection, templates, and organization, while
providing the necessary fostering through collaboration and communication (Edmodo, 2012). It
aims to address the diverse needs, strengths, various styles of learning, and interests of every
student in the online learning environment (Edmodo, 2012). When teachers have the knowledge
and ability to offer their students various ways to complete and study content, they will have
more insight to the content necessary to excel academically and technologically, thus respect for
success and advancement is at the foresight of their future. Edmodo is a necessary tool that
allows for teachers qualified in their field of study to facilitate learning having access to their
course(s) in more than one way.
Needs Identification
According to Virginia Department of Education Technological Standards, high school
teachers in the Campbell County School District should incorporate new media in the classroom
to foster more effective collaboration among students, parents, and teachers (VDOE, 2012).
According to the VDOE (2012) one standard states that, “Teachers will demonstrate knowledge
of technologies that support collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity.” Edmodo can
offer the standards required by the VDOE and meet the unique needs of the teacher while
becoming proficient in technological skills. Often, barriers such as lack of knowledge, gap in
age and time with both pre-service and in-service teachers, ineffective technological leadership,
attitudes and beliefs in traditional and e-learning classroom environments, reliability, and
administrative support, prevent implementation of new technology (Butler & Sellborn, 2002).
EDMODO 101 3
Teachers need to bridge the existing gap in communication among students, parents, and
teachers at our school. School administrators and policy makers assumed that having access to
technology would ensure teachers immediate use and students learning about it (Hixon &
Buckenmeyer, 2009). Hixon and Buckenmeyer (2009) state that these assumptions were based
on the philosophy, “if you build it, they will come.” In fact, the National Educational
Technology Plan for 2010 by the U.S. Department of Education concluded:
The technology that enables connected teaching is available now, but not all the
conditions necessary to leverage it are. Many of our existing educators do not
have the same understanding of and ease with using technology that is part of the
daily lives of professionals in other sectors. The same can be said of many of the
education leaders and policymakers in schools, districts, and states and of the
higher education institutions that prepare new educators for the field. (pg. xii)
Implementing an all-inclusive, social media tool within each classroom has the ability to
strengthen communication, connection, and collaboration among all parties involved. Teachers
recognize that technology is at the core of virtually everything society does today and understand
the criticality of its implementation. However, teachers need the necessary skills to integrate this
new media into their classrooms effectively; thus we feel a workshop on the integration of
Edmodo within our high school classrooms is essential. As technology continues to dominate
the future and is at the core of our learning experience, teacher knowledge of Edmodo will
enhance learning skills for the students in a blended learning environment. Teachers must be
prepared to emphasize, provide, and ensure that every student of every diversity, need, and group
are learning to use technology effectively and efficiently as usability of the system is key (Unal
& Unal, 2011). This workshop will address that need.

Context and Learner Analysis
The Campbell County School District serves approximately 2,666 students in grades 9-
12. Campbell County School Division educators have recognized that a sufficient infrastructure
is in place, and there now needs to be an emphasis on professional development in the areas of
technology, collaboration, and engagement (CCPS, 2012). While Campbell County School
District aims to provide educators with proficient basic computer skills, they believe that a lack
of training for emerging technology is a learning barrier that constrains them from advancing in
the 21st century. As reported in the Virginia Department Annual Report Card Summary for
Campbell County Schools (2012), only 44% of educators have advanced degrees in their field
(VDOE, 2012). Educators are willing to learn and to implement technological skills based on
prior knowledge and experience, which builds upon educators varying their facilitating styles in
accordance with advances in education that enhance their students’ learning environment in both
asynchronous and synchronous learning (Spector, Merrill, Merrienboer, and Driscoll 2008).
The introduction of Edmodo to the classroom is a systematic, asynchronous approach for
teachers in grade levels 9-12 and in all topic areas to implement instructional design that aims to
facilitate the use of quality technology in the classroom. Teachers will obtain the necessary
skills and knowledge to implement Edmodo built upon prior experience that focuses on the
whole teaching-learning experience to meet the needs of the classroom. These needs consist of
multiple ways to post and exchange documents, provide detailed schedules, expectations,
engagement and communication among teachers, co-workers, parents, and students, and offer
exploration of lessons, resources, and research, as well as how each component relates to one
another. Teachers have been motivated to learn Edmodo in the Campbell County High Schools
through a brief summary and understand the immediate value of what it has to offer. The
teachers further feel that Edmodo offers a relevant connection between socialization and
EDMODO 101 7
academic learning and a way to offer their students choices to enhance their learning based on
their learning style(s).
The teachers will design their own course setup through Edmodo through direct
instruction and collaborative organizational support that will consist of five consecutive modules.
Through indirect instruction at home or work, training videos for indirect instruction,
management software, PowerPoint slides, hand-outs, and instructional staff support on how to
set-up, integrate, and introduce Edmodo into the classroom will be offered and available. This
content will include standards, collaboration, organization, reflection, overview, templates, and
assessments in topic area. While Campbell County Schools offer high speed internet service, it
will be needed at home to utilize Edmodo if teachers choose to work at home rather than use the
school’s resources. RealPlayer, FlashPlayer, or Windows Media Player will be needed to watch
instructional how-to videos.
Professional development of Edmodo will be enhanced through leadership, school
structure and organization, and resources and support. The nature of the learning context,
compatibility, and constraints of the environment for the teachers and instructional goals are
instructed in the workshops using resources provided by the school such as computers, laptops,
mobile devices, iPads, etc., at the local county vocational center during normal business hours to
prevent any personal or time constraints. Further learning can be enhanced at home with
personal computers and/or iPads furnished by the school. Thus the learning environment
adequately supports the eventual work environment of the classroom and the home. Each of
these characteristics provides for visual deficits, comprehension, and sequenced and structured
support. These workshops will be recorded for post-review as well. It is reasonable to assume
that all expected learners can be taught and learn Edmodo based on their prior knowledge of
EDMODO 101 8
basic computer skills to ensure that the instruction is effective, efficient, and appealing. This will
offer the learner democratic and equitable communication and time and location independence.

objectives. After the questions are answered, they will watch the next instructional video which
will direct them to start their Edmodo account.
EDMODO 101 10
Prerequisite Questions:
1. Do you have an email account?
2. Do you have at least three documents on the computer you are using for this
workshop?
3. Do you have an assignment which you can use to add to Edmodo (this can be
fictitious)?
Instruction Modules
Module one will be launched from the public page. After establishing an Edmodo
account and joining the group called Edmodo 101, students will have access to the main group
page which contains five separate modules. Each can be completed in 20 to 30 minutes over the
course of five days.
Each instructional module will begin with brief explanation of the tool being learned on
PowerPoint PDF slides, sometimes including a practical attention getter or a real-life scenario.
Following will be content presentation in video format. After both instructional presentations are
complete, students will be instructed to practice completing the task which meets the objective
which was just demonstrated. After the practice time, students will complete another type of
assessment such as a short online quiz or a discussion board entry which evidences mastery of
the objective. The module will end with a summary.
Assessment will be gathered by two strategies. The first strategy includes the instructor
checking to see if the learner completed each task such as starting a group, adding a post, or
giving a grade to an assignment. The other type of assessment will be through evidence of
knowledge presented through discussion board entries and short quizzes. In addition, learners
will be encouraged to engage with others in the group through the discussion board. Learners
will be given feedback from the instructors in the form of direct posts and comments on quizzes.
EDMODO 101 11
The instructional strategies employed through this workshop are intended for the learner
to apply self-motivation and be proactive to achieve the goals set in place for Edmodo to become
a centralized learning environment for their classroom. Patterns of course activity have been
established, as each component included in the instruction module aligns to maintain forward
progress in the workshops. As the learner becomes more aware of how to use Edmodo,
completion of tasks and evidence of knowledge will be apparent.
