IN THIS ISSUE...
Dear IELA Members,This is my first IELA Chairman’s corner and I amthrilled to write it and to hold this position.
I first became involved with IELA whenI joined LEP as their Regional CEOback in 1989 and I wondered what onearth one of my staff was going towhen he went to the Congress in Rioand came back with stories of awonderful social occasion!! I then hadthe joy of hosting IELA in Sydney inthe early nineties and met these IELApeople!! I started to understand theculture of exhibition specialists andthe wonderful family the members ofIELA were.
Because of IELA I took a greatinterest in our F & E division and thenbought the majority share ofCorrigan’s International and becamean exhibition freight forwarder! Thankyou to Phil, Klaus, Karl and Hans forturning this former freight forwarderinto an exhibitionist!
The reason for my tale is toemphasize the importance of IELA in allour lives and what better stage to holdthe 2011 Congress than Seoul.
It was of course our first visit back toAsia since Beijing and the Congress,Hotel and hospitality were superb. ToSuper Lee and the host companiesmany thanks for making our 26thCongress one of the best. To Anna andDeclan thanks for your great support.Certainly when we all left Korea we hadheavy hearts leaving a beautiful cityand such wonderful people behind!
To our sponsors once again manythanks.
To the Board and Legal Board it wasgreat to cooperate in such greatharmony, more on that later. To Achim
thanks for all your work in the chairafter stepping in very unexpectedly inlate 2009.
From the Congress the Board ofManagement took the greatenthusiasm and desire to moveforward on and addressed thefollowing key issues.
1. To review and look at the WorkingGroup structures and to streamlinetheir workloads
2. To initiate the move from a SwissCooperative to a Swiss Not forProfit organisation
3. To examine and develop morebenefits for IELA members
4. To again work on “white spot”areas
5. To look at networking outside theIELA membership base

6. To establish a PR & Marketing WorkingGroup. This has been done and is led byKay Lohe of Cretschmar. He has a greatteam of volunteers and actions includinga new website will be up by the end ofthis year!
Moving forward since Seoul the Board hasbeen in action. I have attended meetings inDusseldorf and Geneva as well as meeting oursecretariat in Berkhamsted.
The meeting in Geneva was with our LegalBoard and Christoph Rauch and I attended it.We had an excellent meeting followed by ameeting with our Swiss lawyers to initiate themove as outlined in point 2. The meeting wasvery successful and all is on track to deliver theprocess to our members in Barcelona.
Whilst on that subject we are looking atmember benefits for the Barcelona Congressto make it an unforgettable Congress andnetworking opportunity. A great programmeis currently being drawn up and there will benews on this over the next couple of months.
Once again thank you for your continuedsupport of our great organisation, let us allpull together to grow and develop IELA. To dothat we need to have a hard working Board, great Chairpersons and of course volunteersto assist them. If anyone has ideas or wants tojoin one of our groups please let me know!
All the best for the rest of 2011.

QWhat are the majorcustoms documentsrequired for imports?
A. Commercial Invoice/PackingList or Carnet ATA, Air Waybillor Bill of Lading and for oceanshipments a PackingDeclaration. This is for generalcargo, some items or equipmentmay need other or additionaldocuments.
QIs fumigation requestedon wooden packages?
A. Yes. Solid timber packingmaterials should be treated inaccordance with ISPM 15standard.
QIs it possible to send thegoods directly to the
fairgrounds or do they have tobe stopped by a customs pointfirst?
A. Yes and No. All goods mustfirst be released by Customsand Quarantine which isachieved by the electroniclodgement of an ImportDeclaration (Entry for HomeConsumption). In general thishappens prior to the delivery to

QIs Temporary Importationpossible?
A. Yes. Either by Carnet ATA orby commercial invoice/packinglist (a temporary bond fee isapplicable).
QHow and by whom is theCustoms Bond Fee paid?
A. The Importer of Record isresponsible for payment of theCustoms Bond (Security). Alogistics provider such as usIELA members can arrange thison behalf of the client.
QIs customs inspection(physical check) on
exhibits mandatory?
A. No. The majority of importshipments entered for home
consumption are releasedwithout inspection. However, temporary import consignmentsare subject to inspection toverify goods against documents.Customs also operate x-rayfacilities at Australia’s majorports for the examination ofFCL shipments.
QWhat is the averageperiod required for
customs clearance?
A. Customs clearance can beprepared in most instances inadvance of shipment arrival.Provided all documents havebeen received then customsclearance can be finalized in 1-2working days after arrival. Ifcargo goes “red line” throughCustoms or Quarantine, additional time will benecessary.
QAre sales allowed duringthe exhibitions?
A. Sales can be made during anexhibition. Duty / GST payableis deducted from the CustomsBond (Security).
QWhat are the restricted &prohibited items for

QWhat are the majorproblems experienced
with local customs authority?
A. Very few problems arise thatcannot be resolved inconsultation with Customs.

Time for another update andto see what’s happening in theworld of Standards...As we mentioned in our lastreport, the preparation for theSeoul Congress and theadjoining Board meetingsformed a pre-congress agendathat included topics such assurveys, analysis of surveys, awards, quality systems andfeedback.
The discussions during themeeting were highly focussing oncontinuous improvement, inparticular in the area of surveysand their respective questions.
Quality is a key topic, nodoubt. In the meantime, themembers of the StandardsGroup are looking at andcomparing various differentquality models, the FIDI/FAMEmanual for example, ISO ofcourse and also the individualmanuals in various companies. This is work in progress and wewill need to analyse the differentoptions and choose the best oneor the best mix, which then canbe presented to the Board next.If anyone of the readers has agreat suggestion – we welcomemore input anytime!
Another conversation startedaround the matter of insurance –this is new on our agenda andthe idea is to look at a type of“protection plan” for IELAmembers. We are currentlyinvestigating the details and willlet you know in our next report.
Talking about surveys andAwards – the Board membersagreed that the surveys wouldcontinue to be linked to theAwards, so no changes there. It
was however mentioned, thatthe Awards could somewhat bedisadvantageous to SME’s andthat large firms with majorregional presence tend to winsuch Awards. Suggestions weremade to create separate Awardsfor SME’s whereby similar sizeentities could compete amongsteach other. Again, we are lookingat other associations includingUFI to see what options arearound to improve the Awardsand make the system fairer.
All in all, lots of very gooddiscussions, and lots more workto do – in the end it is all aboutthe quality within IELA andcontinuous improvement. Watchthis space for more updates inthe next report...and as always,we are open for any input, ideasand suggestions!
Last but not least – a veryimportant note. We are pleasedto announce that MarianeEwbank has taken on the ViceChair role for the StandardsGroup. Thank you Mariane for allyour great work in the group sofar and thank you for taking onthe vice chair role –CONGRATULATIONS to yournew role!

Dear IELA Members,
I would like to start by thanking TijenOzer for her commitment during thelast 3 years in her capacity as Chair ofthe Customs Working Group. Underher leadership, the group has movedforward by improving the way in whichinformation regarding customsregulations and information is sharedbetween members of IELA.
Our primary aim as a working groupis to continue to maintain and developthe database of customs proceduresand regulations. This database willcontinue to be updated regularly andwe are looking at ways in which topresent the information in moreuseable formats.
Europe is preparing for majorchanges to customs clearanceprocedures. European member statesare continuing to discuss practical waysto implement the Modernised CustomsCode (Regulation (EC) 450/2008). TheMCC is set to simplify existing
clearance procedures by reducing thenumber of available CustomsProcedure Codes, creating a paperlesssystem for submitting customsdocumentation and to create a centralsystem with increased cooperationbetween Customs authoritiesthroughout the whole of Europe.
The MCC was originally scheduledfor implementation by 2013, but thecomplex nature of the subject as wellas the financial investment required inthe area Information Technology willalmost certainly result in this targetbeing delayed.
We will monitor the continuingnegotiations and will provide updateson this, as well as any other issues, on aregular basis.
Best RegardsMichael Hunter

Dear IELA Members,The Training Working Group
strives to bring to the associationthe science of systematicknowledge of the industrial arts, especially in communications andcomputers, make sure themembers are aware of newtrends so as to become a forcethat leads the exhibition logisticsmarket/industry - and does notfollow it.
The future of the World WideWeb has already begun... fasterand more flexible communicationpossibilities, as well as e-commerce have opened up a newand fascinating business potential
for us all.IELA - and its members -
should not only be aware offuture developments incommunication technologies, butshould also be a forerunner inimplementing these innovativeadvancements for the benefit ofthe exhibition world in general.
Above is direct quote fromIELA website what TrainingWorking Group is for. There arestill just the right elements howwe should put effort to keeptrack on the high speedtechnology development. Cellphones are coming more likecomputers and media centers. The core is how we can takeadvantage of the newtechnologies.
We have made somebackground research andprepared a simple demo how tomake a questionnaire sent as twodirection SMS allowing answer bytwo direction SMS or if the cellphone supports web connectionit’s possible to follow a link andgive your answers on website. The demo will be targeted toBOM members. There ispossibility to have the serviceprovider to come and give apresentation and run a demo atnext general meeting and sharethis with all member companies.
Another interestingdevelopment is cloud computingservices such as Google Apps. This service we are testing byusing separate website forTraining Working Groupmembers as platform forgathering and sharinginformation. The main objective isto have everything availablethrough the Internet where andwhen ever training groupmembers need and can sharetheir time. The basic idea is thesame from a decade ago. New isthat today’s technology andservices provide easy to use toolsto put up the sharing center(website) with low costs andworldwide connectivity.
Any comments on the aboveare welcome!
Best RegardsErkki Koski

Dear friends,
After a short period (but longerthan expected) of foundation, it´sa great pleasure to pronouncethe official start of the new PR &Marketing Working Group.
To be honest in former timeswe had a committee called “PR-committee”. So the word “new”isn´t 100% right. And for sure wehave to appreciate the big effortsthat Maria Lorenz from BTG didas chairwoman in this times forthis committee.
But nowadays the way ofcommunicating and networkingare a little bit different, so Idecided to call our old/ newcommittee “PR & MarketingCommittee” to show our newspirit.
From the today point of viewwe are proud to greet 7members:
a) Daniela Romaniw fromAgility Australia
Dani, thank you very much forjoining us regarding the fact thatBob as IELA Chairman is alsoinvolved in IELA in a very timeintensive and unpaid way. So,now the two main key players ofAgility Australia are spendingtheir time for IELA.
b) Evelyne Duval from GroupESI, France
Evelyne, thank you very muchfor joining us regarding the factthat ESI is growing in a verystrong way. That needs a lot oftime from your side.
c) John Harrison fromUniGroup, USA
John, thank you very much forjoining our group based on yourown proposal, because I didn´tdare to ask him, because he isalso member of organizerscommittee.
d) Bill Langworthy from RockIt Cargo, USA
Bill, thank you very much forjoining us regarding the fact thatyour personal situation needs somuch time. Best wishes for youand your health.
e) Ben Wang, ThroughTransport, Taiwan
Ben, thank you very much forjoining us. Maybe you are theyoungest in our group. So weexpect the most progressiveideas from your side.
f) Last but not least it is greatpleasure to have Vicky Bedi fromPS Bedi, India in our group. He isthe very important connectinglink between our committee andthe IELA Board of Management, because he is a port of the BOM.Vicky thank you for supportingus.
g) Kay Lohe from CretschmarMesseCargo, Germany as theChairman of this group.
For sure we are really open-minded for everyone else of IELAwho wants to join us! If you getthe feeling that someone of yourIELA network wants to supportus, don´t hesitate to invite him.
The big question everyone
wants to get an answer is: whatwill be our purpose and whatkind of work we have to do!
My personal reason to leadand refound this committee is tobring IELA more closely to therelevant exhibition markets in theworld.
So, our first “job” will be theprocess of restructuring the IELAhomepage. We defined the 1stof Jan 2012 as online starting dayof the new homepage. After asuccessful implementation of thenew modern webpage, we asworking group have toconcentrate on the IELA Reportand new ideas for contents ofIELA newsletters.
Most warm regards
