STEP: Merit-based safety recognition for the merit shop!
Created in 1989 by the ABC National Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Committee to recognize ABC member companies with exceptional safety records.
Provides ABC contractor members with a consistent, effective tool to evaluate safety training programs by using 20 standard “key components” of safety. Each key component focuses on specific safety and training areas essential to a successful, effective safety training program.

What do I need to get involved?

Completed OSHA Form 300A (“Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses”) MUST be submitted with STEP application STEP Platinum applicants MUST ALSO submit

Section 1: Company Information
Company Name. Company’s official name as indicated in ABC member database
Chapter. Primary ABC Chapter that company is member of
Contact Name. Person filling out STEP application
Email. Address of person filling out application
Application Representation. Determines if application is for entire company or branch office
Identical Application. Determines if same application is being submitted to other chapters.
Section 1: Company Information
Primary NAICS Code. Refer to chart in application book for NAICS code which best describes majority of work performed
Work Type. Percentage of residential, commercial and / or industrial work performed by applicant
Proximity of Work to Headquarters. Amount of work performed within 0-100, 101-250 & beyond 250 miles from applicant’s main office / headquarters
Percentage of Work Self-Performed/Sub-contracted. Amount of work that company performs itself and amount that is subcontracted
Section 2 – Safety Performance Data
Lines a through h: Use your competed OSHA Form 300A (“Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses”) to provide this data. Information in parentheses refers to lines on the OSHA Form 300A.
Note that (b) and (c) ask for CASES, while (e) and (f) ask for DAYS. Also, complete (g) and (h) using this information from your OSHA Form 300A.
Experience Modification Rate: Contact your workers compensation insurance carrier to obtain your Experience Modification Rate (EMR, or “mod factor”).
Section 2 – Safety Performance Data
Number of federal/state OSHA inspections. Total number of OSHA inspections performed. If applying as whole entity, use total # of inspections company-wide. If applying as branch/division, use only total # of inspections at that location.
Number of federal/state OSHA final citations issued (after settlements). Total number of upheld citations issued by OSHA.
3-year Employee Fatality History. Determines if company has had any employee fatalities company-wide that resulted in OSHA citation.
Section 2 – Safety Performance Data
Length of Safety Orientation. Total time, in minutes, that new employees are required to undergo for safety orientation.
Toolbox Safety Talks Frequency. Number of times jobsite safety talks are conducted.
Substance Abuse Program. Determines if company has program that screens candidates/employees for drug/alcohol use.
Section 3 – 20 Key Components Self-Assessment
Use the STEP application workbook’s “20 Key Components” section to rate your company’s current safety training efforts
Enter scores from each question into corresponding blanks on STEP application and enter total score
Make sure that you have a complete understanding of your company’s safety program
Solicit input from employees out in the field to get a complete picture of your overall performance!
How do I evaluate?
Your safety program MUST contain ALL of the items listed under each score to qualify for that score
Example: if company does everything in the “12” score except “solicits feedback on program…” then they should score themselves an 8
Section 4 – Company / Chapter Certifications
The person who certifies that the information on this form is complete and accurate should print their name and title, and sign on the appropriate lines. If that person also completed this form, another management-level employee should confirm the application.
ABC Chapter representative confirmation. After you have completed your STEP application, forward the STEP Submittal Sheet to your local ABC chapter. Once received, your ABC chapter representative will endorse the form and forward it to the ABC National safety office. Applications received without the endorsement of the local ABC chapter will not be considered.
STEP Platinum Payment
STEP Platinum Payment Information. Only applicants applying for STEP Platinum level should complete. The fee for STEP Platinum recognition is $195 and includes eligibility for ABC’s National Safety Excellence Award.
STEP Platinum recipients may purchase additional framed ($40 each) and unframed ($15 each) certificates using this form.

Applying for STEP Platinum - Benefits
STEP Platinum award winners are eligible for ABC’s National Safety Excellence Award (NSEA), as well as for the Construction Users Roundtable Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CURT/CISE) Award.
STEP Platinum level is open to ALL applicants regardless of previous program status!
