The World-famous Toilet House in Suwon is now open as a tourist attraction, preserving the legacy of the former Suwon Mayor and former Korean Assemblyman Sim Jae-Duck who will forever be remembered as „Mr Toilet.‟
Sim, who died two years ago, was so passionate about toilets that he built the world‟s first Toilet House – an unusual building identified by Yahoo Travel as one of the World‟s Strangest Structures.
The toilet theme is central to Haewoojae, or a "place to solve one's worries," It is shaped like a 24 ½ foot-tall toilet bowl.
A showpiece bathroom at the center of the 4,520-square-foot house is on display through a floor-to-ceiling window made of glass that turns opaque at the touch of a button. When guests enter to do their business, a motion sensor activates classical music. The home has four bathrooms that include a whirlpool bathtub, urinals and large glass showers.
As unique as Haewoojae is, what makes Sim most memorable to people was his campaign as Suwon Mayor to clean up public bathrooms. From 1995-2002, he launched a campaign to transform public toilets into "clean and beautiful resting places imbued with culture''.
“We should learn to go beyond seeing toilets as just a place for defecation,” the late Sim once said, “but also as a place of culture where people can rest, meditate and be happy.”
When Haewoojae first opened in November 2007, Sim would allow two guests to spend the night at the house for a fee of 50,000,000 won (about $50,000 U.S.). He used the money to purchase toilets for poor communities throughout Korea and throughout the Third World.
Tours of the Toilet House are free of charge. It is open from 1000-1800 Tuesday-Sunday and is located at 458-9 Jangan Ro, Jangan-Gu, Suwon City (Imok-dong 186-3). Suwon Rec Center Director Bob Frace is planning a tour in the near future. You can contact Frace at 788-5840 for more information.

Surprises in store for October
You’re going to see some differences in this month’s Happenings – differences suggested by readers and fellow Family & MWR staffers alike. And while our surveys indicate that you look to Happenings to find out what’s Happening in the Community, we know that we can probably do things better.
One of the biggest differences you’ll see (this one suggested by Catering Manager Lisa Hogue) is the elimination of the Hours of Operation page, moving the hours and phone numbers to the sections where the facility falls. Sections are Special Events, Food & Beverage, Discover Korea &
Asia, Sports & Fitness, Recreation, Family Programs and Advertising.
We hope that dividing our programs and activities will make it easier for you to find out what’s happening in Bowling (Sports), Youth Services (Family Programs) or at Outdoor Rec (Recreation).
This is a very busy month for Special Events, with the Official Army 10-Miler Shadow Race on Oct 2 and running through the Thriller of a Killer Bowling Party in the Strike Zone Oct 30.
In between is the Oktoberfest, a new Karaoke Krooner Contest at Tommy D’s, The Return to Spooky Hallow and much more.
We will be very interested in your feelings about the changes we made. Do they work for you? Do you like the old way better? Are there other things we need to add?
The purpose of Happenings is very simple: We want it to be the first place you look to find out What’s Happening in your Family & MWR program. If we do that, we’re successful.
We also realize that things can change. Happenings goes to a commercial printer, and that means early deadlines. That’s why there are the Weekly Flash, Facebook and Daily Garrison Notes.

Official Army 10-Miler Shadow Race
Sunday, October 2
Pre-Registration for the Official Army 10-Miler Shadow Run scheduled to step off from in front of the Super Gym at 2100 Sunday, Oct 2, had already surpassed 300 runners as of press time and promises to be the largest road race ever run on a US military installation on the Korean peninsula.
Camp Humphreys is one of two locations selected to host Official Shadow Runs by the Army 10-Miler (the other is in Afghanistan) and is being run a week ahead of the official event so it can be filmed by AFN-Osan and sent to Washington to be played at the Army 10-Miler. Further information is available at the Super Gym (0505 753-8031).
Army 10-Miler Shadow Run
Become part of history
Important Shadow Run Information
Alphabetical Registration desks in the Super Gym will open at 1830, and pre-registered runners will find their entry number and computer chip ready and waiting. Any pre-registered runner who is not in line by 1945 will lose their pre-registration status and be required to get in the “Unregistered line.” All runners will gather on the basketball floor at 2030 for a group picture and filming and will move outside to the starting chute at 2045. Retiring Area III Command Sgt. Major Jason K. Kim will shoot the starting pistol at 2100 on the dot, with new Area III Command Sgt. Major Spencer Gray the first person across the starting line. The remainder of the field will follow. The race will consist of two loops around the Camp Humphreys perimeter, and will be marked by Washington landmarks at the mile markers. All roads will be closed to everything except emergency and event vehicles until the last runner is finished (around midnight). Please remember: This is a 10-mile run – not a walk.

Spooky Hallow for Humphreys team
Since its inception 11 years ago, Spooky Hallow has been designed to provide a safe, controlled environment for the children of Camp Humphreys Military and Civilian Employees. It is not intended for the outside community. Trick or Treating is not an activity in the Korean Community. Anyone wanting to bring a youth group from outside to the activity must clear it with PAO and DES beforehand. But remember – the target is our kids. .

Camp Humphreys gymnasiums offer an extensive series of Fitness Classes built around the various Aerobics disciplines as well as new and non-traditional programs such as Aquacise, Kickboxing, Zumba, Spinning and more.
But there are several problems with attempting to maintain a complex program, starting with the fact Camp Humphreys is a military community.
Soldiers who work part-time as Aerobics instructors get transferred, go to the field or get called to duty. Spouses, Civilians and Family Members get jobs, have sick kids, move or have at-home emergencies.
And then there is the ever-changing world of personal exercise itself. The days of jumping jacks and knee bends are gone. Today’s programs are scientifically designed, and there are programs that concentrate on specific parts of the body.
Humphreys Aerobics instructors get paid $20 a class. Would you like to join their ranks and have a part-time job that involves just a couple of hours a week and doesn’t normally involved either weekend or holiday work?
It isn’t as difficult as you think. All you need to do to qualify is get certified in an Aerobics or exercise discipline and talk to Sports Director Lonnie Herring.
“Some people think they have to go through a formal course at a college or fitness center in the States,” Herring said, “but in these days of the Internet, on-line certification is possible, easier and usually much cheaper. We have current instructors who earned their certification on line. We monitor all of our fitness programs to make sure they are doing what they are designed to do and are safe. Instructors who were certified on-line are passing the test.”
Herring encourages interested individuals to contact him at the Super Gym and go on line and search for “On Line Aerobics Certification” for a list of places that can give you the Certification you need to start working.

Facebook can add adventure to your Humphreys assignment
USAG-Humphreys Commander Col Joe Moore has called Facebook the “virtual Town Hall,” with the Camp Humphreys Facebook page a 24-7 forum for questions, answers and solutions.
And now thanks to a group of Army wives led by Nicki Mitchell Murray, Camp Humphreys has another active Facebook that can make an assignment to Camp Humphreys a far-more rewarding experience.
The site is a mouthful -- Traveling Throughout South Korea and Neighboring Countries – but the information you can gain on the site will provide every person walking, talking or breathing at Camp Humphreys an endless list of suggestions and experiences to enjoy during their time in Korea.
Even better, you get information from people who have “been there, done that.” You get suggestions on usual attractions, hotels, food, costs, directions … everything you need to know to be prepared to have a more enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Murray created the site back in May, and a scan through the older posts show a steady growth and an expansion of available information. Every day, dozens of new people “Like” the site and request to be added as a “Friend.”
Family & MWR Marketing is one of those “Friends” and is using the site to provide advance notice about trips and programs to be offered by Outdoor Rec, Discover Seoul and US Airline Alliance. We strongly encourage everyone to join today. Thank You, Nicki.

Area III Military Families of the Year Nominations Open
November is Military Family Month, and for the third consecutive year, Family & MWR will recognize our Outstanding Families with a Recognition Ceremony.
All nominated Families are honored at the Recognition Ceremony, with three Families further honored as the Best of the Best.
Qualifications are simple: Anyone can nominate any Area III Family by submitting their name, contact information and a short explanation of what makes the nominee a “Perfect Example of What a Military Family Can and Should Be.”
Past nominees have included everything from Families headed by Privates to Lt. Colonels, from Civilian Employee to Retiree, from Families with no kids to a Family with eight kids.
“None of that matters,” said ACS Director Suzanne James, who will form the committee that sorts through the nominees and selects the Best of the Best. “The only thing that matters is that the Family exemplifies What a Military Family Can and Should Be.”
Nominations need to be sent to FMWR Marketing Chief Mike Mooney at [email protected] no later than Oct 13. Mooney will then compile the list of Nominees and send them out to the Community for endorsements and supporting information. The Recognition Ceremony will be at the Community Activity Center at 1700 on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Child Care now available at Super Gym
Kids on Site (KOS), professional Child Care operated by Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS), is now available at the Super Gym Monday-Friday, with morning and early evening sessions offered daily.
The program is designed so parents can exercise or participate in organized fitness programs without having the kids underfoot. Cost is $4 per hour per child and require both reservations and a KOS Punch Card. Cards are $60 each and are good for sixty 15-minute sessions. They are available at Parent Central, which has moved to the Youth Center. Please call 753-3413.

No Professional Singers. A Professional is considered a person who has been paid to sing.
Minimum number of entrants each week is two. Duets and Trios are allowed, but only count as a single entrant and must share the prize if they win. Two winners advance to the finals each week.
Each entrant will sing one song of their choice. It can be Karaoke Music with lyrics, computer data stick or CD. No 8 tracks or cassettes. Rap music will be allowed, however it must be radio edited.
Open to US Military personnel, Civilian employees, Contract employees, KATUSAs, Retirees and Family members age 18 and above.
Top two finishers each week will receive a $25 AAFES Gift Card and advance to the November 2 Finals. Previous weekly winners can perform at a later contest but will not be eligible to win.
Weekly winners will be selected by a combination of sound meters and comment cards, so participants are encouraged to bring their fan base with them.

Got a special event planned?
Have us do All the Work while you get All the Glory!
The weather is changing and there’s a nip in the air. Can the holidays be that close? There are only a limited number of locations and dates available to squeeze all the Unit and other holiday parties between the scheduled activities. And, as always, the early bird gets the worm. We encourage everyone to set their party dates as soon as possible and give us a call.

Catering Manager Lisa Hogue and the staff of Family & MWR Business Operations has completed an extensive rewrite and redesign of the Camp Humphreys Catering program guide just in time for the upcoming holiday party season.
The new Catering Guide spells everything out in plain English, addressing all facets of making your event a success – from menu selections all the way to decorations and even advice on extras like flower and live entertainment.
“Basically, we tell you what we can and cannot do, answer as many questions as possible beforehand and provide as much expert insight as possible based on our experiences,” said Business Operations Division Chief Mike Ross.
“I’m pretty proud of the result. Lisa and the remainder of the staff put a lot of work and thought into this Catering Guide. I think the people who are going to be put in charge of a Unit function for the first time in their career are going to find this a valuable tool both now and in the future.”
Traditionally, a junior officer or an NCO who has never planned a catered event gets assigned the extra duty of planning the Unit party. Many times, those individuals arrive at the Catering office at Tommy D’s with a look of confusion on their face – even after having things explained to them.
The new Catering Guide should eliminate most of that confusion and help serve as a step-by-step guide for planning the perfect function.
In addition, the Catering menu itself has been upgraded, with some new items and other items put together in a package.
“Our goal,” said Ross, “was to make it simple, easy and less confusing. I think we accomplished that and more.”
Ross encourages party planners to contact Hogue as soon as possible to start the process towards scheduling their holiday parties.
“The sooner people start the process, the smoother things are going to go,” he said. “Besides, I’m anxious to see the Camp Humphrey Community’s reaction to the new Catering Guide. I think they will be as happy as we are with the end product.”

Magpie in morning means Lucky Day
Korea, like every other country, has its own superstitions. And since October is the month of ghosts and goblins, let’s explore some of the superstitions unique to Korea.
The first involves the magpie, those colorful and noisy birds found all over Camp Humphreys. Koreans believe if you see or hear a magpie in the morning, you’ll have a Lucky Day.
On the other hand, if you see a raven or crow, look out! Luck won’t be with you.
Here are some other superstitions found in Korea:
If you sleep in a room with a fan running and the window closed, you won’t wake up.
You can’t take a shower for 24 hours after getting a shot or you’ll die.
You can’t wash your hair on the day of a school exam or all your smarts will be washed out of your head.
If you dream of a pig, you will have good luck. Dreaming of a dog is bad luck.
If you cut your hair, you will grow taller … unless your mother jumped over you when you were a baby, in which case you will never be tall.
To ace an exam, eat yut, a form of sticky Korean candy, beforehand so the answers will stick in your head and the pencil will stick to your hand. But don’t twirl your pencil. That makes you stupid.
The meat from the neck of a chicken will make you a better singer.
If you cut your toenails after dark, they can turn into a ghost or spirit that may kill you.
If your child loses a tooth, it must be tossed onto the roof.
Avoid the number 4 at all costs. Korean apartments and hotels don’t have a fourth floor. The elevator will say 1-2-3-F-5 or 1-2-3-5. The number 4 symbolizes death in Korea. When you purchase a set of dishes in a Korean store, there are always five table settings – never four.
Teachers may use a red pen to check their students' papers, but never to write personal comments or the child’s name. Writing a name in red is a death sentence.
Do not touch your eyes after touching a butterfly or moth, or you will go blind.
If you die in the water, you will be a ghost forever and never find your way to the afterlife.
There are other superstitions, but these are some of the most-widely practiced. Is that a magpie I hear chattering?

Rare treat available this month
Much has been written about the plight of Amerasian children born of Korean mothers and American fathers in the 60 years the US Military has served in Korea.
Life has always been difficult for these children who were often shunned by Korean society because of their mixed heritage and ignored by American fathers who left Korea for Families back in the States or somewhere else in the world.
The Pearl S. Buck International Foundation worked with many of these mothers and children, providing schooling, food and clothing.
Korean Entertainment
Kim In-Soon was born to a Korean mother and an African American father, who served in the US military in South Korea in 1957 and was brought up by her mother with the assistance of the Buck Foundation.
She may be the foundations greatest success story.
Known simply as Insoone, she is considered Korea’s top R&B Diva and is one of the few female singers to have ever performed at Carnegie Hall. She sings both Korean and English songs in her repertoire.
She will be appearing in concert at the Olympic Park Gymnastics Gym on Oct 30. Tickets priced at SR-132,000, R-110,000, S-99,000, A-88,000, B-77,000 are available through tickets.Interpark.com. Prices are in Korean won.

Taste of Korea
Soft or hard – Persimmons are great!
October marks the arrival persimmons to Korea’s markets, tables and tree branches. You’ll see them on leafless trees – a bright orange globe waiting to be plucked and enjoyed.
Called the Fruit of the Gods by the Greeks, Korea features two kinds of persimmons – hard and soft.
The hard ones are light orange and smaller (about the size of a tennis ball) and are peeled and cut into sections like an apple. The soft persimmons are larger and a deeper orange. They aren’t ready to eat until they’re spongy, and the best way to enjoy them is to nip a hole in the skin and suck out the fruit.
But be careful!
Suck the fruit out of a soft persimmon that isn’t quite ripe and your lips will pucker into a grimace that lasts until Christmas.
Koreans make a punch out of persimmons and dry them to make a special dessert that’s stuffed with walnuts and served for special occasions.
Persimmons will be available in local markets as well as the commissary. As with any fresh fruit or vegetable, be sure to wash it before eating.
Do yourself a favor. Enjoy this great taste of Korea in both the hard and soft varieties and even the dried version if you get the chance. You won’t regret it.

Korean Baseball playoffs this month
Just like the US, Professional baseball in Korea is approaching the playoff season. Unlike the US, however, only four teams make it into the Korean Playoffs and the regular-season first-place team sits and waits to see who it will play in the finals.
As of press-time, the four Championship Series teams had already clinched berths, with the Samsung Lions of Daegu almost certain to win the regular season and await the playoff survivor.
The final position of the other three playoff teams, however, is very much in the air. Samsung was leading the league with a 69-45-2 record, 6½ games ahead of the defending champion SK Wyverns of Incheon (63-52-2) and the Lotte Giants of Busan (64-53-5) and 8½ games ahead of the Kia Tigers of Gwangju (66-59-0).
In the playoffs, the 4th-place finisher plays the 3rd-place finisher in a Best of Five Series. The Winner then plays the No. 2 Seed in a Best of Five, with the Championship Finals a Best of Seven.
As with the regular season, playoff games cannot go beyond 12 innings. In the regular season, a tie counts as a loss for both teams. If it happens in the playoffs, however, the game has to be replayed from the start, meaning series can take more than the allotted games.
The playoffs should start Saturday, Oct 8 (providing the make-ups from the season-long rains can be played) and will be on Korean TV. As with the regular season, playoffs start at 1930 on weekdays and 1700 on weekends. All games are broadcast on multi-Korean sports channels, so you won’t have trouble finding them on the tube.
The Hanwha Eagles of Daejon has clinched seventh place in the league, but is scheduled to play Busan in their final three regular season games Oct 4-6 and could play a major role in determining the final seeding.

The Lunar New Year doesn’t arrive until the end of January, but inspired by the new Traveling Throughout South Korea and Surrounding Asian Countries Facebook page, Family & MWR Marketing plans to kick off the Yearof the Dragon with a special Humphreys Assignment trio of Bucket Lists.
The plan is to create three 100 item lists to hand out to Newcomers as they arrive at Camp Humphreys:
100 Things to do at Camp Humphreys 100 Things to do in South Korea
100 Things to do in Asia
Marketing Chief Mike Mooney admits he can create the list on his own. But for it to be really meaningful, he is asking the Camp Humphreys Community to help design the final lists.
“We want this collection to be something that Newcomers can use as a guide to help make their tour of Camp Humphreys, Korea and Asia a meaningful and rewarding experience,” Mooney explained.
“And that means gathering suggestions from as many sources as possible. Personally, I’m really into sports, travel and photography. But I’m not really enthusiastic about ballet, squid or music in general. If everyone was like me (and fortunately, they’re not), I could generate a pretty one-sided (and boring) list. So send me your suggestions.”
Mooney wants five each Bucket List items from as many people as possible. In order to assure time for sorting, selecting and printing in plenty of time for the Lunar New Year, the deadline is December 10.
“That gives us a little over two months,” Mooney said, “so start sending your ideas right away. I will put together a panel of people to sort through the final lists, so let me know if you want to volunteer to help. We want this to be a Community Project. Just E-Mail your five suggestions to [email protected].
Creating Collective Bucket Lists
And, just to get you started, here are five of my suggestions:
Eat a bowl of cucumber kimchi (Korea) Swim with the Sharks at the Busan Aquarium (Korea) Play the slot machines in Macau (Asia) Hike to the top of Mt. Fuji in Japan (Asia) Cosmic Bowl at the Strike Zone (Camp Humphreys)

One for your Bucket List
Hong Kong & Macau
There has been a lot of discussion on the local Facebook pages lately about creating a Bucket List – those things you want to do before you leave Korea.
Here’s one Family & MWR Marketing recommends you add.
U.S. Airline Alliance offered a four-day trip to Hong Kong over the Labor Day Weekend. The cost was $1,000 a person which included visa, airfare, food, hotel and tours. It also included a full open day for shopping or whatever else you wanted to do.
Hong Kong is a unique place to visit … an area that was under British rule for a hundred years and although it is again part of China, it is still an International city and has a personality of its own.
And just a 45-minute boat ride away, is another unique International City – Macau, which belonged to Portugal for a hundred years and is now the gambling capital of the world.
Our Hong Kong guide arranged for most of our group to spend our free day in Macau where, for $100 a person, we received the ferry ride, a visit to the old Portuguese town and church, a great buffet lunch, a visit to the Panda Farm and about two hours to test out the Venetian Casino.
The trek also included Victoria Peak, a sampan cruise, shopping, great food, historic sites and temples – plus a super hotel. Put it on your Bucket List and check with Airline Alliance (753-7725) for your next opportunity to visit Hong Kong.

Gyeonggi Province, which geographically includes Camp Humphreys, will host the 92nd Korea National Sports Festival from Oct 6-12 in 21 cities and 65 stadiums throughout the Province.
Unfortunately, Gyeonggi Province runs from just south of the Humphreys CPX Gate and all the way to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and all the action will be north of us.
But it should be an impressive event, with some 28,000 athletes competing in 45 sports ranging from high school to professionals.
The only action anywhere near Humphreys will be in Suwon where the World Cup Stadium will be used as a practice pitch for the men’s soccer teams.
In addition to a lot of sports, there will also be a large number of cultural activities connected to the festival – many of them involving North Korea defectors.
One of the most unique features of the festival will be a waterborne torch run that will include yachts sailing past Pyeongtaek Harbor on its way North.
Suwon’s Hwaseong Cultural Festival, and Gwangju’s Cultural Festival will be tied into the Sports Festival, as will the World Ceramic Biennale Korea in Yeoju, which Outdoor Rec & CAC Arts & Crafts visit this month. Opening Ceremonies will be held at Ilsan Lake Park – the first time opening and closing ceremonies will be held outside a stadium.

You’ve asked, we’re listening
There has been considerable (and appreciated) praise for this special section of Happenings, with people saying it provides them good ideas for places to go and things to see.
But there has also been some comment concerning the fact we don’t always provide enough detail to help people go somewhere.
We plead ‘Guilty’ as charged, and that’s the purpose of this page. Korea is about the size of the State of Indiana. However, unlike the Hoosier State, the Korea road system is, in many cases, relatively new and in a constant state of flux. Everywhere you look, there is new construction and a new road going somewhere.
It’s nothing like the old days when the only completely North-South route was MSR-1 (Military Supply Route) which ran from Busan to the DMZ.
But how do we help you?
One recommendation is that you install korea4expats.com/event.php as one of your favorites.
This is one of the web sites we use in our search for festivals and other activities to recommend that you enjoy. A nice thing about the site is that each event has a button you can click. When you click the button for an event, you disclose the cost, venue, description of the event, list of known participants, directions from the Seoul Bus Terminal and times buses run, travel time, auto and train information, web site links (many times only in Korean) and a contact telephone number that you should be able to punch into your GPS.
It is also a good idea to get your GPS unit updated every couple of months. With the amount of road construction in Korea, routes change on a regular basis. Check at the eXchange electronics desk for help. The upgrades also load the information to detect new speed cameras, helping you avoid traffic fines for excessive speed.
This is one thing to try. See if it works for you, and if you have a better idea, let us know. It doesn’t do anyone any good to learn about a great event if they can’t get there.

Format changed for Post-Level Soccer, Flag Football & Powderpuff
Driven largely by a lack of funds, this year’s Korea-wide Post-Level Soccer, Flag Football and Powderpuff Football will be played as a series of Jamborees rather than weekly competition involving extensive travel.
The first Soccer Jamboree will be October 1-2 at Camp Casey, with the first Flag and Powderpuff Jamborees expected to be played either Oct 8-9 or delayed until Oct 15-16 because of the Columbus Day Weekend. No location had been determined as of press time.
Post Basketball
The Post-Level Men’s Basketball team practices each Tuesday & Thursday at 1830 at the MP Hill Gym. If you think you’re good enough to make the team, show up for practice or contact Coach Denny Elvoid at 010-7135-9333.

BOSS program needs you!
Are you a Single Soldier, a Single Civilian Employee or a Geographical Single Soldier?
The USAG-Humphreys BOSS programs wants your body to participate in BOSS programs and to share your ideas and concerns.
Each Unit at USAG-Humphreys has a BOSS representative. Get to know who it is and let them know. Better yet, participate in a BOSS activity.
October good month to earn points towards an Army Volunteer Medal
Although Army Regulations do not specify any particular length of time or number of hours a Soldier must volunteer to earn the Volunteer Service Medal, most commanders require a culmination of volunteer hours over an extended period of time.
If you’re a Soldier who wants to earn a Volunteer Medal (and the accompanying Promotion Points), October is a gold mine waiting to be worked. And the BOSS program is the way to go.
Humphreys BOSS Soldiers are scheduled to provide volunteer services at no less than four major events this month: The Army 10-Mile Shadow Run on Oct 2, Oktoberfest on Oct 8, Make a Difference Day on Oct 22 and Spooky Hallow on Oct 28. And next month, it will be the Soldier Show on Nov 15.
If a Soldier were to volunteer for all five events, they would pick up 20 hours or more in Volunteers hours. And since most commanders require a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer service before putting someone in for the medal, that’s a significant step forward.
Check with your chain of command concerning the Volunteer Medal and then contact your Unit BOSS rep or BOSS itself to volunteer your skills and services.
While only Soldiers can earn a Volunteer Medal, Korean and US civilian employees, Family members (including youngsters), KATUSAs, retirees and anyone else is invited to join BOSS and volunteer for any of the special activities.
ACS recognizes Volunteers each Quarter (the next one will be at the Oct 18 Town Hall, so get involved.

Weekly Newcomer’s Briefing
moved from ACS to Super Gym
The Super Gym is the new home of the Weekly Newcomer’s Briefing, held every Tuesday from 0830-1145.
Newcomer’s provides you helpful information about Humphreys and its many resources. It is open to Soldiers, Civilians and all Family Members. Attendance is required for Family Members who want to obtain a USFK Driver’s License.
There was a bit of confusion in the September Newcomer’s, with a group showing up thinking they would be getting their license at Newcomers.
Just so everyone is clear, Newcomer’s attendance is mandatory to “qualify” for a license. ACS sends a list of attendees to the Driver License Testing Office operated by the Directorate of Logistics (DOL). DOL handles Driver’s Licenses for USFK Soldiers, Civilian Employees and Family Members (Contractors have a different process)
Go to http://humphreys.korea.army.mil/ for complete information on obtaining a driver’s license.
Because of the Columbusr Day Weekend, the Oct 11 Newcomer’s will be held Wednesday, Oct 12.
Army Family Action Plan Conference Set for the Super Gym October 6-7
The Camp Humphreys AFAP will be held at the Super Gym Thursday and Friday, Oct 6-7, with the Out-brief scheduled for 1600 Friday
AFAP is an Army-wide activity where Soldiers, Civilians and Family Members bring up issues and concerns that impact the Army world-wide.
Issues selected by Camp Humphreys are sent to Eighth Army where they can be decided or sent on the Department of the Army. Past AFAPs have led to significant changes – especially in Quality of Life issues. Plan to attend the Out-Brief for a better understanding..
