derives from French and is perhaps most confusing in the words used for colors
or, more formally, tinctures. Here is a brief glossary:

Argent = White or Silver
Colours:
Gules = Red
Azure = Blue
Vert = Green
Sable = Black
Furs (provide texture):
Ermine = Black spots on a white field
Erminois = Black spots on a yellow field
