APPLICATIONSBASF presents new products andproduct forms at SEPAWA 2004

BASF now also supplies its high-performance chelating agent Trilon Min easily incorporated granular form. The free-flowing granules do notagglomerate, but dissolve quickly inwater and are readily biodegradableaccording to OECD guidelines. Thistrisodium salt of methylglycinediaceticacid (MGDA) is used in dishwashingpowders and tabs, laundry detergentpowders and tabs, and in water-softening products. To preventcalcium phosphate deposits, whichcan occur especially if 3-in-1dishwashing detergents are used,BASF has developed the modifiedpolycarboxylate Sokalan CP 42,which ensures scale-free tablewarewhatever the level of water hardness. It can be supplied as a liquid, as a40% solution or as granules. If someof the surfactants in formulations arereplaced by BASF’s surfactantEmulan HE 50, the dynamicsincrease considerably by comparisonwith the original surfactantformulations, the company says. Thiseffect is particularly pronounced incombinations with BASF’s Plurafac®grades. BASF describes Emulan HE50 as a ‘booster’ that, in combinationwith other surfactants, produces a‘super-wetting agent’ capable ofwetting surfaces in the shortestpossible time. Combinations ofEmulan HE 50 and Plurafacsurfactants are water-soluble andeasy to formulate, produce little foam, are readily biodegradable and VOC-free. BASF has also developed newadditives for automotive, leather, shoe, furniture and floor care, andhas extended its product range.Products available include formulationsin its Poligen wax emulsion and Luwaxself-emulsifying wax ranges.

MARKETREVIEWS

Global oleochemical conferenceaddresses changes and challenges

At a recent conference for theoleochemicals industry held inAmsterdam, The Netherlands, issuesaffecting the sector including capacitychanges in the alcohol sector and itsinfluence on the market werediscussed. Alcohols are forecast tocontinue to be a competitively pricedraw material for the sector. Growthrates for alcohols were forecast at3%/y and they will continue to play asignificant role for surfactants. Themarket for oleochemicals as a rawmaterial for surfactants wasdiscussed as was the marketcomparison between oleochemicalsand petrochemicals for detergents. By2005, south-east Asia will account for53% of global fatty acid productionand 50% of world fatty alcoholproduction, making this region themajor producer worldwide. Trends inUS consumption of fatty acids andglycerine were discussed. NorthAmerican fatty acid production iscurrently 900,000 tonnes but it isexpected to decline in the next tenyears; current influences in thismarket were presented. Otherproducts discussed were tallow andbiodiesel, new developments inoleochemical processing and newapplications in cosmetics andpersonal care products. The impact ofimpending European legislation wasalso discussed.
