combined with surfactant systems for clear shampoos, styling gels and leave-on sprays. HAPPI, Household & Personal Products Industry, Oct 2004, 41 (10), 147 APPLICATIONS BASF presents new products and product forms at SEPAWA 2004 BASF now also supplies its high- performance chelating agent Trilon M in easily incorporated granular form. The free-flowing granules do not agglomerate, but dissolve quickly in water and are readily biodegradable according to OECD guidelines. This trisodium salt of methylglycinediacetic acid (MGDA) is used in dishwashing powders and tabs, laundry detergent powders and tabs, and in water- softening products. To prevent calcium phosphate deposits, which can occur especially if 3-in-1 dishwashing detergents are used, BASF has developed the modified polycarboxylate Sokalan CP 42, which ensures scale-free tableware whatever the level of water hardness. It can be supplied as a liquid, as a 40% solution or as granules. If some of the surfactants in formulations are replaced by BASF’s surfactant Emulan HE 50, the dynamics increase considerably by comparison with the original surfactant formulations, the company says. This effect is particularly pronounced in combinations with BASF’s Plurafac® grades. BASF describes Emulan HE 50 as a ‘booster’ that, in combination with other surfactants, produces a ‘super-wetting agent’ capable of wetting surfaces in the shortest possible time. Combinations of Emulan HE 50 and Plurafac surfactants are water-soluble and easy to formulate, produce little foam, are readily biodegradable and VOC- free. BASF has also developed new additives for automotive, leather, shoe, furniture and floor care, and has extended its product range. Products available include formulations in its Poligen wax emulsion and Luwax self-emulsifying wax ranges. MARKETREVIEWS

Global oleochemical conferenceaddresses changes and challenges

At a recent conference for theoleochemicals industry held inAmsterdam, The Netherlands, issuesaffecting the sector including capacitychanges in the alcohol sector and itsinfluence on the market werediscussed. Alcohols are forecast tocontinue to be a competitively pricedraw material for the sector. Growthrates for alcohols were forecast at3%/y and they will continue to play asignificant role for surfactants. Themarket for oleochemicals as a rawmaterial for surfactants wasdiscussed as was the marketcomparison between oleochemicalsand petrochemicals for detergents. By2005, south-east Asia will account for53% of global fatty acid productionand 50% of world fatty alcoholproduction, making this region themajor producer worldwide. Trends inUS consumption of fatty acids andglycerine were discussed. NorthAmerican fatty acid production iscurrently 900,000 tonnes but it isexpected to decline in the next tenyears; current influences in thismarket were presented. Otherproducts discussed were tallow andbiodiesel, new developments inoleochemical processing and newapplications in cosmetics andpersonal care products. The impact ofimpending European legislation wasalso discussed.

Belarus: detergents industry losesmarket share

Since the collapse of the SovietUnion, the Belarus detergents

industry has lost market share towestern and Russian suppliers.Overall output of synthetic detergentshas fallen from 6700 tonnes in 2002to 6100 tonnes in 2003. The biggestproducer is the BarChim chemicalplant. Its current operating rate is just20-25%. BarChim’s market share inBelarus has averaged 10-20% inrecent years. Instead of producing apossible 15,000-16,000 tonnes, output is around 3500 tonnes.Leading western suppliers in Belarusare Procter & Gamble and Henkel.Belarus imported synthetic detergentsworth $35.46 M in 2002 and $43.41M in 2003.
