There are 6 slices of pizza. When we write a fraction, we write the total number of parts on the bottom. This is called the denominator.
6This is the denominator. It tells us how many total parts we have. We have 6 slices of pizza, so we write 6 on the bottom of our fraction.
Hmm...I wonder what goes here...
Now I ate a slice of the pizza.Mmm...delicious!What part, or fraction, of thepizza did I eat?
The top of the fraction, the numerator, tells us how many parts of the whole we are looking at. I ate 1 slice of pizza, so my numerator is 1.
6Remember, our denominator tells us how many total parts we have. The pizza was cut into 6 slices.
