Best Value Frozen Pepperoni Pizza

Feasibility Study 5

Executive  Summary

Our group, Group 1, has studied and tested the feasibility of getting a good value when purchasing a national brand frozen pizza from local grocers. We want to present our findings to the student body at UNT under the assumption that any busy student will appreciate knowing which pizza brings a thrifty value.

We chose four different national brands and tested for four different criteria. The testable criteria did not depend on personal opinion, but quantifiable data available from the physical parameters of the pizzas themselves, and store price. Qualifying parameters for the study included cost, number of pepperoni slices, size and weight (as listed on the packaging). In the case of a tie, we will consider additional criteria of quickest cook time.

We rated each pizza against each other, finding a winning pizza in each category. Then the pizza winning the most categories is determined to be the best value for having the most top ratings.

Our recommendations, based on the findings and ratings according to our rating system, are that the DiGiorno Pepperoni Pizza is the best value frozen pepperoni pizza on the market and poses as a good choice for busy, thrifty college students.

Introduction

Students in college appreciate value. Students evaluate the value of their food all the time, especially the foods they buy often. Group 1 has decided to determine which brand out of four popular frozen pepperoni pizzas is the best pizza overall in order to help students insure that they are getting the most for their dollar. The pizzas are judged based on four criteria:

Criteria 1: Cost. We will determine which pizza costs the least and use that information as a benchmark for comparison among the other criteria.

Criteria 2: Size. We will determine which pizza brand is the largest. Criteria 3: Weight. We will use weight as a standard along with size to determine which

brand provides the most pizza. Criteria 4: Number of Pepperonis. We will determine which brand uses the most of the

topping desired as an additional standard for comparison. In the report that follows, we examine these criteria and recommend the pizza brand that delivers the most value for a student’s money.

Scoring  Methods

Our group will use a table to score each brand of pizza for the different criteria. We will give a star to the pizza that rate best in each category. At the end of the research, we will add up the stars each brand earns to determine which pizza has the most overall stars. That will be the best value.

In the case of a tie, we will use a 5th criteria as a tie breaker.

Criteria 5: Quickest Cook Time. We will determine which brand has the quickest cook time if we need to break a tie.

Pizza  #1  Freschetta

v Cost - The Freschetta pizza was purchased at a local grocer at a cost of $6.19.

o This was not the largest pizza in diameter.

o This pizza’s thickness was the same as Tombstone’s.

v Weight – The box containing the Freschetta pizza listed the weight as 27.18 ounces or 1 pound 11.18 ounces.

Conclusions

Each of the four pizzas has its pros and cons.

v Pizza 1, Freschetta, provided a thick rising crust along with 19 pepperonis, and finally, weighs in at 1 lb 11.8oz. Though this wasn’t the heaviest pizza of all the options, it was the most expensive, which is why this pizza gets a rating of 1 star.

v Pizza 2, DiGiorno, also had 19 pepperonis with a crust measuring 1 inch thick, and weighed in at 1 lb 12.3oz. Though this wasn’t the cheapest pizza, it was cheaper than pizza 1, and it weighed more. Because of these results, this pizza earns a rating of 3 stars.

v Pizza 3, Tombstone, was quite similar to pizza 2 in that they cost the same price and had the same amount of pepperoni, yet this pizza lost some stars in the weight department and fell 1/4th of an inch short in diameter. This pizza gets a rating of 1 star.

v Pizza 4, Red Baron, had 19 slices of pepperoni and came in as the cheapest pizza out of the 4 brands chosen to study. While it was the cheapest pizza, it also was the smallest in diameter and crust thickness. Because of these results this pizza gets a rating of 2 stars.

Based on our evaluation of the pizzas following the criteria of price, size, weight and number of pepperoni slices, we came to the conclusion that pizza #2, DiGiorno, is the best choice.
