Introduction
I was born on August 14th 1906. I am German-American and in my teen years I became interested in avant-garde art.
In late 1920’s I left Hamburg Kunstgewerbeschule to go to Paris and study architect.

In Paris I became close to the people in the art community. I also met a Vogue Photographer. I became his photographic assistant. I then began my association with Vogue and had my photograph published in the French Edition.

Inspiration & MotivationBefore I originally wanted to become an architect. I am known now for my photographs of women and fashion, but also still life. My work reflects on my interest for surrealism and the ancient Greek ideal of physical beauty.

How I do itWhen I moved to Oyster Bay, New York. I designed myself a studio. When I photograph, I prepare the shoot by using a lot of dramatic lighting, backlighting and props.
I rarely make my photos include shadows falling on my background. Most of my work is in black & white. I try to create a parallel universe to make them mysterious and alluring, even elegant. Which became my signature.

What was happening
But actually, when I emigrated to the US, I applied for a US citizenship. I joined the army back in 1943 and finally became a American citizen. I was a Army photographer because I was recognized for my photographs. Horst P. Horst August 1, 1937

Influences
When I returned from the war.I continued my career as a photographer. Much of my work got printed in forces’ magazine Belvoir Castle. I was encouraged to capture the lifestyle of international high society.

Influences
Even my career have reached one of the world’s most famous pop goddess, Madonna. In her video she posed as a recreation of my most iconic fashion image photographed.
