THE IMPACT“ The fact that the course was custom designed for Rio Tinto helped make the material particularly relevant and useful. The professors were excellent, and their background and experience coupled with their academic knowledge made them truly great facilitators. The opportunity to meet colleagues from across Rio Tinto and learn from their experiences was just as valuable, and building a network of people with a diverse set of skills and experiences will be very helpful in the future. It was the best professional development course or class that I have taken to date in my career.”

THE CHALLENGEAs a world leader in finding, mining, and processing the earth’s mineral resources, Rio Tinto was challenged with non-uniform systems and processes for stakeholder engagement throughout its international work sites. Rio Tinto released an RFP to find the right organization to tackle this growing challenge, and we responded with a plan to address the organization’s needs and accomplish the following goals:
THE PROGRAM Georgetown’s unique combination of business leadership with public policy and foreign policy expertise led Rio Tinto to join forces with the Executive Education team. The Rio Tinto Stakeholder Engagement Academy was a key part of our initiative to professionalize stakeholder engagement across Rio Tinto. The academy is a multifaceted training and development program designed to enhance behaviors, improve competencies, and innovate systems in stakeholder engagement. The academy comprises three components: residential courses; a Stakeholder Engagement Academy “portal”; and on-site business-specific training modules. The residential courses run over four days. Program delivery locations include every major business hub for Rio Tinto, with modules in Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, and the United States.

“ Before I came here, I worked in a specific business function in ICBC that was deployed in mainland China. The ICBC Executive Custom Program was an incredible immersion in global finance, public policy, economics, and communications. It exposed me to other viewpoints and allowed me to learn how other cultures do business. And that will continue to help me in the future, whether I continue on with the same business or go overseas to another kind of industry. Our collective experience will have a measurable impact on ICBC’s cross-cultural communications moving forward and give us more international perspectives in banking.”

The following case studies are examples of global customized solutions for our clients. Topics,
locations, and program durations — along with many other variables — are made to fit each client’s
needs and objectives.
THE CHALLENGESouth Korean conglomerate SK Group employs more than 70,000 people across 22 companies. With worldwide operations in diverse industries like energy, chemicals, telecommunications, and more, SK Group companies needed a comprehensive global leadership program that would immerse executives in the complexity of global markets and sharpen their leadership skills and international business acumen.
THE PROGRAM Our location in Washington, D.C., and our ability to highly customize courses made Georgetown McDonough an ideal partner for SK Group’s Global Leaders Program. In 2005, Georgetown designed a short, week-long program. Pleased with the outcome, SK’s leaders selected Georgetown for a more extensive 12-week curriculum to immerse managers in the nuances of global leadership from an American perspective. There were four core components of the expanded Global Leaders Program:
Classroom instruction
English language classes
Visits to companies and institutions
Field learning projects
MEASURABLE RESULTSHow Custom Programs Work for Leading Companies
SK GROUP THE IMPACT The Global Leaders Program provided valuable leadership education in strategy and management as well as cultural insights about what it means to operate and lead internationally. Participants were fully immersed in American culture and experienced the intersection of global business and policy in Washington, D.C. They toured and met with senior executives from such organizations as the American Petroleum Institute, Google, DuPont, the Semiconductor Industry Association, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
“ Since completing the program, I have focused on developing my team members’ capabilities and suggesting strategic directions more clearly as a leader. I try to understand the differences of team members, because each individual has his own character and background.”

BOOZ ALLEN HAMILTONTHE CHALLENGEAs a leading provider of management, strategy, and technology consulting services to the U.S. government, Booz Allen Hamilton frequently partners with agency leaders to help them manage large change initiatives. Given the broad spectrum of change methods, tools, and theories available to executives, Booz Allen sought to raise the standards for change management consulting by partnering with Georgetown University.
THE PROGRAMGeorgetown McDonough and Booz Allen first created the Change Management Advanced Practitioners (CMAP) program in 2009, making this our longest-running program to date. The program applies and integrates faculty and practitioner expertise in core change disciplines, including leadership, culture, human capital management, strategy, and operations. The result is a comprehensive, graduate-level change management program. The intensive, nine-day course is spread over five months. Through the partnership, 50 percent of the content is taught by Georgetown faculty and 50 percent by Booz Allen, marrying theory and practice — and offering graduate-level credits and a certificate from Georgetown University — making the program the first of its kind in an increasingly important area.
THE IMPACT The CMAP program has enhanced Booz Allen’s ability to help government agencies manage change and mitigate risk. Working in teams, participants complete Action Learning Projects, many of which have been shared with clients and have resulted in additional client engagements for Booz Allen. The change management framework developed for the course has become the firm standard for change management engagements and is influencing the development of standards for the change management profession.

“This program’s unique foundation in theory and practice provides a full arsenal of change management knowledge and tools to our consultants. As a result, our consultants will be able to choose and apply the most effective change management theories with their practical applications, strategies, and frameworks to best serve the needs of each individual client.”

THE IMPACT The program helped leaders at Pacific Rubiales better understand the markets they should pursue, why they should pursue them, and how the company can succeed in these chosen markets.
“ The long-term success of our business model depends on our ability to think strategically and innovate. The Georgetown program strengthened my strategic thinking tools, which I can now apply to different areas of our organization.”

THE CHALLENGEAs the largest independent oil and gas exploration and production company in Colombia, Pacific Rubiales Energy has seen tremendous growth since 2007, doubling annual oil production in most years. To continue this growth and face the increasing business challenges in the oil and gas industry, Pacific Rubiales focused on leadership development, strengthening the decision making and innovation capabilities of its rising leaders. To that end, the company wanted a course to help address the following needs:
THE PROGRAM Georgetown McDonough faculty researched the industry context and interviewed the top leadership of Pacific Rubiales to gain a deep understanding of their challenges and strategic capabilities. This enabled us to customize an academic program that would address the major industry challenges the company faces.
The program was delivered over the course of five days in Bogotá by Georgetown faculty in concert with Pacific’s award-winning Corporate University. Broken into two 2.5-day modules, the curriculum focused on strategy, decision making, and nonlinear strategic thinking. We did not provide Pacific Rubiales with its strategy; rather, we provided frameworks for leaders to create and implement their own strategies for future growth.
