cquin health AND wellbeingAN OFFERING TO THE NHS...
cquin?what is
This document outlines the need for the NHS to improve its offer as an employer to look after the health and wellbeing of its staff. In doing so we will highlight the reasons for taking action, drawing on the emerging evidence within the NHS Healthy Workforce Programme, whilst also providing specific clarification and support to help introduce the measures in the Health & Wellbeing CQUIN.
3
The main issues facing the NHS
• The estimated annual cost to the NHS of employee sickness is £2.4billion. As one of the most physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding jobs, studies show that the lack of well-being could be a key contributor to employee sickness.
• The NHS has got to be leading and setting the example in a healthier workforce. If they get their staff healthy it will make their staff better at caring for patients.
• From a study led by Dr Steve Boorman, 80% of staff believe that a healthier workforce will have a positive impact on patient care.
• The NHS need to be seen as caring for their staff.• Increasing staff retention.• Re-enforcing message to the public with regards to
health & well-being– setting an example.• Reducing the cost to Government.

The main part Affecting retail sales
The aim of this indicator is to change the organisational behaviour and culture towards the food and drink sold on NHS premises by focusing on making healthier food and drink more widely available. It has previously been estimated that around 300,000 NHS staff are obese, with a further 400,000 staff being overweight. One of the main causes of which we know is diet and the consumption of foods high in saturated fat, salt and sugar.

how does this affect me as a retailer?

The biggest change to you as a retailer is to make healthier food
and drink more widely available to the
consumer, it isn’t the fact that all HFSS (High
Fat, Sugar and Salt) should be removed
from the department.

Why is it important to have a balance of Healthier and HFSS foods?
Consumers who currently have a healthy balanced diet may
prefer to choose a snack with a higher nutritional content.
There is therefore a danger of turning these consumers away
to other outlets off site.
A doctor on a long shift will regularly purchase a 500kcal
flapjack to give them the needed energy boost to keep
them positively charged in their physically and mentally challenging activities.
Whilst the guidance is key, it is still very important to remember that consumers
need choice. Not everyone will look favourably on buying
healthier foods, for example:

A major consequence could be the loss of revenue. We all know that the NHS urgently needs money, and the more that can be kept coming in
through NHS retail outlets, the better.
