Train-the-Trainer Training

Who Should Attend Produce safety educators and others who are interested in
becoming PSA Trainers or PSA Lead Trainers. Day 1 is the full PSA
Grower Training Course for fruit and vegetable growers and
others interested in learning about produce safety, the Food
Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule, Good
Agricultural Practices (GAPs), and co‐management of natural
resources and food safety. The Grower Training Course is
integrated with the Train‐the‐Trainer course to allow trainers to
learn from the questions growers ask.
What to Expect at the PSA Integrated Train-the-Trainer
Course Day 1 gives the trainers the opportunity to learn with the
growers and to learn what types of questions and situations are
like to arise.
Introduction to Produce Safety
Worker Health, Hygiene, and Training;
Soil Amendments
Wildlife, Domesticated Animals, and Land Use
Agricultural Water (Part I: Production Water; Part II:
Postharvest Water)
Postharvest Handling and Sanitation
How to identify microbial risks, practices that reduce risks,
and how to begin implementing produce safety practices on
the farm
How to Develop a Farm Food Safety Plan
Day 2 is trainers only and includes a review and in‐depth
discussion of the seven modules presented on Day 1 in the PSA
Grower Training curriculum. Other trainer‐specific topics
include: principles of adult education, how to incorporate the
PSA curriculum into other extension trainings, how to develop
working partnerships, expectations for trainers, and how to
register a PSA Grower Training Course with the Association of
Food and Drug Officials (AFDO).
Benefits of Attending the Course After attending the entire course, you will be eligible to receive
the Certificate of Course Attendance for the PSA Train‐the‐
Trainer Course and be a PSA trainer. The Train‐the‐Trainer
Certificate of Course Attendance is enough to verify you have
met the FSMA Produce Safety Rule training requirement of §
112.22(c). Trainers who nonetheless wish to receive both the
Trainer and the Grower Training Certificates of Course
Attendance may do so by paying the appropriate AFDO
certificate fee.
Registration Pre‐registration is required to attend. Registration is limited to
the first 30 completed registrations.

Non‐UK from Kentucky: $200
Out‐of‐State: $250
Registration fee includes lunch, snacks, PSA Trainer Manual and
Certificate of Course Attendance from AFDO
Registrations accepted beginning December 17, 2018.
Registration closes on February 1, 2019.
