THE request by Pietermaritzburgpatrons for new, fresh faces and es-tablished comedians has beengranted as the vernacular, livestand-up comedy show, 99% Zulu, will be taking place on Saturday atthe Winston Churchill Theatre.
The show starts at 8pm andtickets cost R150 at Computicket.
Show producer, MonwabisiGrootboom, said that they havereceivedalotofdemandfortheshowin PMB. The audience will begiggling at the jokes of KediboneMulaudzi, Mdu Ntuli, SimphiweShembe, Felix Hlophe, SiyandaMaphumulo, Nzuzo Cele andSphelele Khanyile.
“The support we receive everytime we work in PMB is great, saidGrootboom.
“Over the years, people in PMBhaveasked for fresh faces, aswell asestablished comedians from otherparts of the country. This comingshow is littered with fresh talent.
Some of the artists will beperforming in Pietermaritzburg forthe first time.
Kedibone Mulaudzi fromDailySun TV has been one of themost in demand artists by PMBpatronsandhewillhostingtheshow.
“TheturnoutinPietermaritzburghas been absolutely great. We haveonmany occasions had to turn peo-pleawayfromthedoordueto ticketsbeing sold out and so we encouragepeople to buy tickets early,” he said.
Grootboom added that stand-upcomedyisprobablythefastestgrow-
ing creative industry in the country.“This is purely because of the
growingappetiteof thepeopleofSA.However, the support is very slow insponsorship by both thegovernment and privatesector,” he said.
Mulaudzi’s inter-national appearanc-es include perform-ances in SouthKorea, SouthBank Arts CentreLondon-UK,Atlanta, Tanza-nia, Zambia,Lesotho andSwaziland.
The onething thatsets himapartfrom hispeers isthat hewrites hissets for interna-tional audiences - hisjokes are funny in SouthAfricaandanywhereelsein the word.

After today’s clashes, the townstreamwillbetheonlyoutstandingonebefore the finals of the four stream

Developing the mind
A PHYSICALLY challenged, but ironwilled, footballer hasmore chances tosucceed thanaphysically giftedbut la-zyplayer. Themajority of coachesandparentseasily fall into the trapofbeingoverly excited about the presence ofphysical talent.
We become too fixated on shortterm ability as compared to focusingon potential ability. Physical talentpresentinayoungfootballeristhrillingtowatch, but it is not a reliable indica-
tor of a future success. The soft skills likediscipline, perse-
verance, motivation, dedication, thewill and want, and self-managementare gifted from birth as much as thephysical skills. Coaches put a lot of fo-cus on developing physical skills andneglect themind-set skills. Proper hu-man development entails focus onboth aspects.
Mind-set talent is important in thedevelopmentof physical and technicalskills.Itensuresthataplayerprogress-es fromoneagegroup toanother, fromyouth football to senior/professionalcompetition. Mental strength has be-comeevenmorecritical inhighlycom-petitive football.
We see it every week - players whoshudderwithfearonmatchday.Theseare theplayerswhocompetewithcon-fidenceandlotsofskillsonthe trainingground.
The trap for the so called ‘talented’children is that they become too com-fortable. Themind tells them that they
have already succeeded and do notneedtoworkhard.Wehaveseenmanypromising footballers over the yearsending in the scrap heap. Coaches, teachers and parents need to under-stand that attributing success to talentcan lead to failure. Siyanda Zwane,Lamontville Golden Arrows rightback, hasdone verywell for his club inthe PSL.
He is one of a very few footballersfrom this town to feature consistentlyat this level. I doubt if hewas the ‘best’in his age group in Sobantu Village. Iamsure that at school and communitylevel therewere boyswhowere the fa-vourites of teachers and coaches. Itwouldhelpyoung footballers fromthistown to find out the secrets behind hissuccess. I have no doubt that desireand perseverance pushed him to thetop.

Cordies grows Ashdown Primary rugby
JONATHAN COOK
“THE original Rugby Cubsstarted at Cordwalles in2012. Head of sport Lance
Veenstra approachedmeat the end of2011andaskedifIwouldbeinterestedin starting an initiative whereby wewould introduce the Grade one’s andtwo’satCordwallestorugbyasawholeand develop their basic skills so thatwhen they started formal rugby inGrade three, they would already befamiliar with the concept of rugby.
“Through Cordwalles’ alreadystrong outreach link with AshdownSchool, it seemed a natural progres-sion to get involvedwith themand seeifwecouldnothelpexposesomeof theboys at Ashdown to rugby.”
These are the heart-warmingwords of Cordwalles teacher andcoach Rory Bremner, the formerMaritzburg College and PMB Varsityfirst XV scrumhalf.
TheRugby Cubs initiative is part ofCordies’ (as the school is fondlyknown) outreach relationship withAshdown Primary, which is in opera-tiononmanylevels-academic,cultur-al and other.
“TheCordwallesschoolbusfetchesthe Ashdown boys at 1.30pm. Whenthey arrive, they go into a briefwarm-up and then we put them throughvarious speed and agility drills aswellas basic handling, tackling and ruck-ing drills.”
Ashdown’s super-keen youngstersabsorb it like a sponge and have
quality mentors in Rugby Cubs headcoach, Andre’ Greyvenstein (theformer Maritzburg College first teamskipper and current UKZN Impi cap-tainandeighthman)whoisassistedbyMaritzburg College Old Boy BayandaMbambo.
Once training is done, the boys aretransported back to Ashdown in theCordies bus.
“Ourmainoutcomethatwehopetoachieve is the opportunity to exposeyoungboys to thegameofrugby ,”saidrecently qualified teacher Bremner.
“It is a fun, safe environment forthem and something different fromtheir normal daily routine and at ayoungageweareable to identify thosewith potential and help to developthem further.”

Willie Mtolomade me win
THE newly crowned Comrades Marathonchampion, Bongumusa Mthembu, showeredformerNewYorkMarathonwinner,WillieMtolo
with praise after his win.The Nedbank Athletics Club, and Bulwer born
Mthembu singled out Mtolo, an Underberg resident, for mapping out his road to success. Mthembusurprised his followers and fans at Kingsmead CricketStadium after crossing the finish line.
Mthembu clocked 5:28:34.In second place was the 2012 downrun winner,
Ludwick Mamabola, in a time of 5:33:14. Accordingto Mthembu, Mtolo was responsible for his trainingprogramme for a lengthy period.
“I think were were in his training camp for aboutthreemonths.WetrainedaroundthehillyUnderberg,Sani Pass area and in some mountains aroundLesotho. Aside from guiding us everyday with ourtraining, Mtolo advised us and spoke from experienceand straight from the heart.
“I can openly say it Mtolo’s training methodsmade me a winner. He will be always my role modeland mentor. I am very grateful to him,” saidMthembu.
Mthembu said his plan was to stay with a groupof elite athletes and work from behind.
“It’s not wise at all to lead the race in the earlystages. Top runners or potential winners always workslowly from behind the leaders. I stuck to that plan.Later I stepped it up a gear and fortunately it workedfor me,” said Mthembu.
Mtolo said Mthembu deserved to be a winnerafter trying for a couple of years and staying focusedon his goal to one day with the title.
“To tell you the truth, I have never seen a totallydedicated, focused, clean living and disciplined athlete such as Mthembu. The fact is, hard working, honest and clean living athletes are bound to win oneday,” said Mtolo.
Mthembu say his aim now is to take a long, deserved break before thinking about planning forthe future.
“I need a long rest and to fully recover beforethinking about any future road running events orplans.”
The women’s winner was Eleanor Greenwoodfrom Great Britain in a time of 6:18:15. Jerry Barnes
