During the morning, Ms. Singer and Ms. Ochoa (top left photo) conducted the ESL Student Recognition ceremony during the ESL graduation trimester ending celebrations. Sitting to their right are students who completed the ESL program levels 1-6. Ms. Sanchez, gives greetings to all students on behalf of the administration.

Ms. Galvan speaks to the audience during the evening ESL promotional ceremony. Students pose with their certificates of completion. Each teacher presented their students with certificates. Mr. Fade helped to present certificates to students in Ms. Linares class, who wanted to let her know they miss her.

At night, the ceremony was held in the Multipurpose Room with the participation of all ESL classes. For Mr. Sanchez, our newest ESL instructor, this was a very inspiring event seeing the enthusiasm of the students. The graduates from the programs were also honored.

ESL Graduation Activities at Eastside

Our students at Eastside listened to the motivational speeches from our ESL graduates. The majority of our students have pledged their intent to complete the ESL program and transition to other programs. Some of them want to complete their high school diploma and some want to enroll in some of our CTE programs at the Skills Center.

Cooperative Learning Strategies: From CTE to the II Lab and Beyond – Effective Questioning for Think-Pair-Share (From Learning Together, December 2013)

Asking questions is integral to what we do as teachers. This is the impetus for Think-Pair-Share. There are many ways to ask questions that are better than others. Thinking about and preparing specific questions prior to teaching a lesson will often lead to more effective classroom discussions. Using thoughtful questions will encourage students to think critically about the concepts at hand and teachers must use always aware of using effective questioning practices. Differentiating questions for multi-level-students in ESL, ABE, ASE and CTE classes gives various points of entry for student engagement. When we do this, we are modeling questions we want students to ask on their own. In the CTE classroom for example many of the questions used can be equally effective in other programs. We can ask, “How are you going to do this?”; “What is the process or what are the steps?” We can ask: “How can you do this faster? “Is there another way to do this?” ”How would you look at the problem differently next time?” “How do you know which tool (rule, strategy, etc.) will work best?” These kinds of questions overlap the move toward greater meta-cognition and student autonomy that are part of recent educational reform and good teaching. Two simple comments we can teach our students to say to their partners in Think-Pair-Share are: “Tell me more.” and “Tell me why.” Use TPS for critical thinking exercises and discussion related to reading and vocabulary assignments. Students have shared their thoughts with their peers and the class. It is a great way for them to share ideas and learn from each other.
