1ou must use a different computer name for each operating system if the
computer is on a Windows 666 or Windows X domain.
The operating systems should be installed from oldest to newest. If possible,
install operating systems in the following order&
MS#(9S
Windows 27, Windows 23 or Windows Millennium "dition'ote:1ou cannot install Windows Millennium "dition over any version of
Windows 4T, but they can e>ist together on a single system. It isrecommended that you install each to a separate hard dis% or partition. If
Windows 4T is already installed, Windows Millennium "dition Setup will
add itself to the Windows 4T boot menu to allow you to multibootbetween Windows Millennium "dition and Windows 4T. *or more
information, see Microsoft +nowledge ase article G56.
Windows 4T
Windows 666
Windows X /rofessional or !ome "dition0
Partitioning t!e !ard dis" and selecting file systems- partition is a logical section of a hard dis%. "ach partition normally has its own file
system. *or more information about partitions, see Microsoft +nowledge ase article
FGFF53.1ou might need to reformat and repartition your hard dis% if&
1ou have only one volume but you want to set up a multiboot configuration. 1ou
have to install each operating system on a separate volume so that each
installation can retain its own files and configuration information. The boot volume is not formatted with the correct file system&
If you want to create a multiboot system by using Windows 27, Windows 23or Windows Millennium "dition along with Microsoft Windows X, youhave to format the boot volume by using *-T because Windows 27,
Windows 23 and Windows Millennium "dition do not support the 4T*S
file system. If you want to install Windows 27 /retail version 5.66.2760, your boot volume
must be formatted as *-T. Windows 27 /9S).G and above0 can have a
*-TF boot volume and dual boot with Windows 666 and Windows X.*or more information, see Microsoft +nowledge ase article 73BB.
If you want to create a multiboot system using Windows 27 9S), Windows
23, or Windows Millennium "dition with Windows 666 or Windows X,
you can format the boot volume by using *-TF.'ote:If you format a Windows 4T 5.6, Windows 666, or Windows X volume with
any file system other than 4T*S, you will lose all 4T*S#specific features. This includes
Windows X features such as file system security, "ncrypting *ile System /"*S0 settings, dis% quotas, and remote storage. =i%ewise, Windows 27, Windows 23, and Windows
Millennium "dition do not recogni;e an 4T*S partition they will identify it as un%nown.
Therefore, if you format a Windows 23 or Windows Millennium "dition partition as *-T,and a Windows X partition as 4T*S, any files on the 4T*S partition will not be

Windows Millennium "dition, install either Windows 27, Windows 23 or
Windows Millennium "dition, and then install Windows X.
Install each operating system according to the standard installation procedure.
To create a multiboot system wit! Windows 'T D5E and
Windows XP'sing a multiboot system with both Windows 4T 5.6 and Windows X is not
recommended as a long#term solution. The 4T*S update in Service ac% 7 /S70 forWindows 4T 5.6 is provided only to help you evaluate and upgrade to Windows X.
To create a multiboot system wit! Windows 'T D5E and Windows XP:
Ma%e sure that your hard dis% is formatted with the correct file system& either *-TF
or 4T*S.
Install Windows 4T 5.6, download Windows 4T Service ac% 7 from Microsoft, and
install the service pac%. Then install Windows X to a separate volume.Install each operating system according to the standard installation procedure.
'ote:If you intend to install more than one operating system consisting of somecombination of Windows 4T 5.6 with either Windows 666 or Windows X as the onlyinstalled operating systems, you must ma%e sure that you have installed Service ac% 7 or
higher for Windows 4T 5.6. 1ou can download the latest Windows 4T 5.6 Service ac%
here& Windows 4T 5.6 Service ac% Ba/http&??www.microsoft.com?ntserver?nts?downloads?recommended?SB?allSB.asp0.
Windows X automatically upgrades any 4T*S partitions that it finds on your system to
the version of 4T*S that is used in Windows 666 and Windows X. !owever, Windows
4T 5.6 requires Service ac% 7 to read and write files on a volume that is formatted withthe version of 4T*S used in Windows 666 and Windows X.
Installing programs on more t!an one operating systemIf you have more than one operating system, and you want certain programs or drivers to
wor% on both systems, you must install those items on each system separately. *or
e>ample, if you want to use Microsoft Word on a computer with both Windows 23 andWindows X installed, you have to install Microsoft Word two times /once on Windows
23 and once on Windows X0.
1ou can install the program to the same path for different operating systems, as long asthe target location uses a file system both operating systems can read.
'ote:Windows 27 or Windows 23 might reconfigure hardware settings the first time you
use them, which might cause configuration problems when you start Windows X.
