Installation overview

This release of Windows X includes Service ac% /S0 for Windows X. If you

uninstall this release of Windows X, S is automatically uninstalled too. 1ourcomputer will be running the operating system that it was running before you installed

Windows X, or it will not be running an operating system. 1ou cannot uninstall S

If you are installing Windows X on an older computer, it8s a good idea to chec%

with your computer manufacturer to see whether a I9S upgrade is availablebefore you proceed.

Prepare for SetupThere are four important steps you should ta%e before you start Setup&

)un an upgrade report: it only ta%es a few minutes to chec% system compatibility.

(isable virus protection software: if you do not do this, installation might fail.

ac% up your fileseither by using the ac%up Wi;ard that is built into Windows, or

by using another bac%up program.(ecide which type of Setup you want: an upgrade or a new installation.

(oing these four steps beforestarting Setup can save you time in the long run.

Run an upgrade report

-n upgrade report tells you how your hardware and software will wor% with Windows

X. The upgrade report is a quic% and easy program that you can run using the WindowsX $(. !ere3B.t>t0

What do you do if something is incompatible with Windows X@ 1ou can upgrade eitherthe hardware or software in question, find a similar but compatible program or device, or

you can remove the program or device and stop using it. To upgrade, contact the

manufacturer. To find compatible programs and devices, chec% theWindows $atalog

#isable virus protection $antivirus% softwareCirus protection software sometimes interferes with Setup, so ma%e sure that you disable

it before you begin installing Windows X. *or instructions about how to do this, refer tothe documentation for your virus protection software.

during a new installation, so be sure to bac% up any data you want to %eep before you

begin /ma%e sure that the bac%up data is not stored on the drive you are going to delete0.!eret screen, you have the option of repartitioning your drive. Itisting

partitions, if needed, and then select unpartitioned space and press "4T") to

proceed.

-UTI0':(eleting a partition will remove all data stored on that partition.

efore you continue, ma%e sure you have bac%ed up everything you want to %eep.

Select the formatting method you would li%e to use, and then press "4T"). 4T*S

offers both enhanced formatting capabilities and security technologies. If you

need to access drives or (9S files /such as from a (9S#based boot dis%0 using

Windows Millennium "dition or earlier versions of Windows, you might need to

select *-TF instead. Select either format method /quic% or slow0.Setup will format the drive, copy initial Setup files, and restart the computer.

'ote:-fter the computer restarts, you will again receive the message Press any

"ey to boot from #but you should ignore it so that you do not interrupt thecurrent installation process.

-fter another restart, the ne>t part of Setup will begin.

9n the Regional and ,anguage 0ptionspage, follow the instructions to addlanguage support or change language settings, if desired.

9n the Personali3e )our Softwarepage, type your name and the name of your

company or organi;ation /if applicable0.

9n the )our Product (eypage, type the 7#character product %ey that came withyour copy of Windows X.

9n the omputer 'ame and -dministrator Passwordpage, ma%e up a computer

name /if your networ% administrator gave you a name to use, type that0. Then

ma%e up a password for the -dministrator account on your computer. Type itonce, and then confirm it by typing it again.

9n the #o you !ave a Windows XP #4page, select I will use t!e wi3ard fromt!e Windows XP #, unless you don that lets you choose a custom list of

files and settings to be transferred. This option is for advanced users.-t this point, you might see a message telling you to install certain programs on your

new computer before continuing. This step is not required, but those programs

might not wor% correctly without doing this.

The wi;ard now collects the files and settings you requested and prepares to transferthem to the new computer. Insert a dis% or removable drive when prompted, if you

are using one of those methods.

9n the ompleting t!e ollection P!asepage, clic% /inis!. Then go to your newcomputer, ta%ing along any dis% or $( you have used.

0n your new computer:

$lic% Start, and then clic% /iles and Settings Transfer Wi3ard.9n the Welcomepage, clic% 'e+t.

If you placed your files and settings on a dis% or $(, insert it now. 9n the W!ere are

t!e files and settings4page, tell the wi;ard where to find the files and settings.

The wi;ard transfers the files and settings to the new computer.

9n the ompleting t!e /iles and Settings Transfer Wi3ardpage, read any

messages about the status of your transfer, and then clic% /inis!.1ou might see a message telling you that you need to log off before the new settings

will appear on your new computer. 1ou can Dust log off and log bac% on. There is

no need to restart the computer.That

Type the si;e /in megabytes, or M0 that you want to use for the new partition, and

then press "4T"), or Dust press "4T") to create the partition using thema>imum si;e.

If you want to create additional partitions, repeat steps B and .

If you want to install Windows X, use the arrow %eys to select the partition you wantto install it on, and then press "4T"). If you do not want to format the partition

and install Windows X, press *F two times to quit Setup, and then do not

continue with the following steps. In this case, you must use another program toformat the partition.

Select the format option that you want to use for the partition, and then press "4T").

The options are&

*ormat the partition by using the 4T*S file system /Kuic%0

*ormat the partition by using the *-T file system /Kuic%0

*ormat the partition by using the 4T*S file system

*ormat the partition by using the *-T file system

=eave the current file system intact /no changes0*or most configurations, 4T*S is a good choice for security and fle>ibility. If youplan to install a multiboot configuration and access data on the drive using older

operating systems such as Windows 27, Windows 23, or Windows Millennium

"dition, however, select *-T.When you format a volume, files are removed from the volume and the hard dis%

is scanned for bad sectors. The maDority of the time required to format a volume is

devoted to scanning the dis%. If you choose the Kuic% format option, files areremoved from the partition, but the dis% is not scanned for bad sectors. 1ou

should only use this option if your hard dis% has been previously formatted and

you are sure that your hard dis% is not damaged.

'ote:(uring Windows X Setup, the option to leave the current file systemintact is not available if the selected partition is a new partition. *or partitions up

to gigabytes /L0 in si;e, Setup uses the *-T /also %nown as *-TGB0 file

system. *or partitions greater than L but less than F L, Setup uses the*-TF file system. *or partitions greater than F L, Setup uses 4T*S.

'ote:If you deleted and created a new System partition but you are installing

Windows X on another partition, you will be prompted to select a file system forboth the System and oot partitions at this point.

-fter Setup formats the partition, follow the on#screen instructions to continue Setup.

-fter Setup is complete, you can use the (is% Management tools in Windows Xto create or format additional partitions.

If your computer will not boot from a $(, you can still use the Windows X Setupfloppy dis%s to start Setup. (uring Setup, you will be prompted to insert the Windows X

9therwise, you can use a Windows 23 or Windows Millennium "dition Startup dis% to

start the computer, and then run Winnt.e>e from the iF3B folder of your Windows X $(.

The Smartdrv.e>e tool will speed up the process of copying files from the $( to yourhard drive. To use the Smartdrv.e>e tool, ma%e sure the Smartdrv.e>e file is

present on the startup dis%.

If you do not have Smartdrv.e>e, file copying will ta%e much longer but it can stillbe done successfully. Cerify that the following entries e>ist in the following files

on your startup dis% add the entries if they do not already e>ist&

In -utoe>ec.bat, add this line&smartdrv.e>e

In $onfig.sys, add this line&

Important 'otes:

If enough space is available, the Windows X uninstallation files are

automatically saved during the upgrade process. If space is not available, the files

are not saved. If the files were not saved, you cannot use the uninstallation

process that is described in this section.

-ny programs that were installed prior to the Windows X upgrade will be

preserved. !owever, any programs that were installed after the Windows X

upgrade will not be available after you uninstall Windows X. 1ou might need to

reinstall these programs.

To be able to successfully uninstall Windows X S, you must have upgraded

from Windows 23, Windows 23 Second "dition, or Windows Millennium "dition.

If you upgraded from Windows X, Windows 666, Windows 4T 5.6, or

Windows 27, you cannot uninstall Windows X S.

If you converted your hard dis% to the 4T*S file system, you cannot revert bac%

to an operating system that is incompatible with 4T*S /for e>ample, you cannot

revert bac% to Windows 23 or Windows Millennium "dition0.To uninstall Windows XP:

)estart your computer in Safe Mode. To do so, restart your computer and press *3

while Windows is starting.=og on using the -dministrator account.

$lic% Start, clic% ontrol Panel, and then double#clic% -dd or Remove Programs.

In the list of installed programs, double#clic% Uninstall Windows XP.

Important:If 'ninstall Windows X is not in the list of installed programs, you

must manually reinstall the original operating system. If this is the case, be sure to

bac% up all of your critical data before you proceed.

If you have upgraded to Windows X from Windows 23 or Windows Millennium"dition, it might be possible to manually uninstall Windows X if the 'ndo folder

is still available. *or more information, see Microsoft +nowledge ase article

FG7B2.When you receive the H-re you sure you want to uninstall Windows X and restore

your previous operating system@H message, clic% )esto start the Windows X

uninstallation process.-fter the Windows X uninstallation process is finished, your computer will shut

down and then restart using the previously installed operating system.

7ow do I remove Windows XP from one computer and

install it on anot!er4*ollow the instructions above for uninstalling Windows X. Then, use the Windows X$( to install Windows X on the new computer.

7ow do I deal wit! activation problems4

If you are prompted to activate your installation of Windows X, defer activation until

you have completed planned upgrades or changes to your computered hardware and

related device drivers. 9therwise, you may need to reactivate after ma%ing such changes.

*i>ed hardware?drivers include the first instance of devices such as video, networ%/e>cluding modems0, S$SI, hard drives, $(#)9M?(C(, and system memory. 'S or

other removable devices /such as cameras and printers0 do not affect activation.

If you uninstall Windows X from one computer /$omputer -0 and then install it on asecond computer /$omputer 0, the following can occur&

If fewer than G6 days have passed since the first installation of Windows X on

$omputer -, you cannot activate Windows on $omputer over the Internet.Instead, when you are prompted to activate, you must call the phone number

listed in the -ctivation Wi;ard, e>plain that you uninstalled and then reinstalled to

a different computer, and be given a valid product %ey.

If it has been more than G6 days since the first installation of Windows X on

$omputer -, activation on $omputer should wor% normally.

Troubles!oot Setup(id you run into problems during Setup@ 'nfortunately, it does sometimes happen. Someproblems can be solved by using the information in this section.

Important:If you have virus protection software installed on your computer, disable it.

Cirus protection software can cause problems during setup. e sure to enable your virusprotection software after installing Windows X.

1ou can use the following troubleshooting steps if you have problems when you are

upgrading to Windows X from Windows 23, Windows 23 Second "dition, or Windows

Millennium "dition.

.eneral troubles!ootingIf you encounter problems while running Setup, e>it Setup and run the 'pgrade -dvisor

from the Windows X $(. !erees under Selective startup.

When you are prompted to restart your computer, clic% )es.

-fter the computer restarts, clic% Start, clic% Run, in the 0penbo>, type msconfig,and then clic% 0(.

Important:=oo% closely at the .eneraltab to ma%e sure that the chec% bo>es

under Selective startupare clear. roceed to the ne>t step if none of the chec%bo>es are selected. If you see a disabled or gray chec% bo>, your computer is not

truly clean#booted and you might need assistance from the manufacturer of the

program that is affecting Msconfig.-fter you verify that your computer is clean#booted, try running Windows X Setup

again.

Suppose Setup stops when copying files, and you see a message li%e this&

!ere are some possible causes and solutions for this problem&

1our Windows X $( is scratched, smudged, or dirty. $lean the $( with a soft

cloth, insert it into the $( drive, and then clic% 0(. 1our $( drive is not wor%ing properly or the $( might be vibrating too much for

the laser to accurately read the data. *or more information about this problem,

consult your hardware documentation, or contact the $( drive manufacturer.

If you are using multiple $( drives, your computer might be trying to locate files

on the wrong drive. If your hardware has a feature to disable $( drives that are

not being used, disable the $( drives that you are not using.

'ote:To disable a device in Windows 27, right#clic% My omputer, clic%

Properties, open #evice Manager, and then clear 0riginal onfiguration

$urrent%. In Windows 23 and Windows Millennium "dition, select the #isablein t!is !ardware profilechec% bo> in (evice Manager.

There is a virus on your computer. )un a virus#scanning program to chec% your

system and identify needed repairs.

If you can rule out all of the causes listed above, and you continue to receive the error

message, copy the iF3B folder from the $( drive to your local hard dis%, and then try torun Setup from your hard dis%. !eree tool will speed up the process of copying files from the $( to your

hard drive. To use the Smartdrv.e>e tool, ma%e sure the Smartdrv.e>e file ispresent on the startup dis%.

If you done, file copying will ta%e much longer but it can still

be done successfully. Cerify that the following entries e>ist in the following files

Wait at the blac% screen for G6 minutes to ma%e sure that the computer does notcontinue with the Setup procedure. Watch the hard drive indicator to see if there is

any dis% activity. Setup might resolve the problem on its own.

)estart the computer to see if it stops again at the same place during Setup.9ccasionally, Setup will proceed farther than the last time it stopped responding.

If this occurs, restart your computer several times so that Setup will finish.

When you download the Setup dis%s, the download contains only one large program

Installing programs on more t!an one operating systemIf you have more than one operating system, and you want certain programs or drivers to

wor% on both systems, you must install those items on each system separately. *or

e>ample, if you want to use Microsoft Word on a computer with both Windows 23 andWindows X installed, you have to install Microsoft Word two times /once on Windows

23 and once on Windows X0.

1ou can install the program to the same path for different operating systems, as long asthe target location uses a file system both operating systems can read.

'ote:Windows 27 or Windows 23 might reconfigure hardware settings the first time you

use them, which might cause configuration problems when you start Windows X.
