Transition to a low-carbon economy:
The first African-based Earth system model
The challenge:
• Climate change continues to cause significant changes
to our environment
• African climate issues differ from those elsewhere, and
yet research efforts to address it, is disproportionately
concentrated in the northern hemisphere
Research and development:
• Use expertise in global change, high-performance
computing and modelling to simulate climate change in
Africa
• Focuses on: Simulation of short intense rainfall over
Africa, aerosol-climate feedback, land-surface
modelling, ocean-atmosphere feedbacks,
Southern Ocean biochemistry
