First introduced in 2010, HDBaset has become a connectivity standard for Pro AV installations, enabling all-in-one
transmission of Ultra high definition video through single Cat5/6 cabling up to 100m/328ft to deliver uncompressed 4K video and
audio, USB, Ethernet, control signals and power - a feature set commonly known as 5Play.
To facilitate the rapid growth of the technology an Alliance of manufacturers was created in the summer of 2010, with
WyreStorm joining as an early adopter of HDBaseT and products featuring the technology introduced as early as November 2010.
As of 2015, WyreStorm offer a portfolio of over 45 different products employing different classifications of HDBaseT
technology, spanning 4K and HD matrix switchers, extenders, transmitters, presentation switchers and digital amplifier receiver,
with support of the Alliance product certification program.
Following extensive testing and collaboration between WyreStorm and HDBaset Alliance partners, in particular
component manufacturers of ProAV projectors and panels featuring incorporated HDBaseT inputs, this document offers
specifiers and integrators essential information on what can be achieved with WyreStorm and HDBaseT connectivity.

Reduce CostsTime, as they say, is money and the huge reductions in installation time and complexity thanks to the removal of HDBaseT
receiver devices at display points has an equally dramatic effect on project budgets.
Hardware and cable infrastructure costs, not to mention both man-hours and manpower, are all significantly reduced as a result of direct connectivity to HDBaseT input-enabled display devices, with these savings allowing projects to be even
more competitive in an ever-more competitive market place.
Reduce ClutterThe inclusion of HDBaseT input connectivity on modern display devices removes the need for local HDBaseT receivers
and the accompanying cables and connections at display locations to open up a world of direct source transmission along a single Cat5e/6 cable.
Free your AV distribution from the unnecessary and down right ugly assortment of multi-colored cables of varying materials and thicknesses that distracts from what should be clean, clutter-free installations.
Reduce ConnectionsSure, WyreStorm make both Transmission and Receiver products used to deliver and convert HDBaseT transmissions to
HDMI output connectivity, but we don’t want to force devices to be used if they’re not required.
If a projector or display already has an integrated HDBaseT input, all that’s needed is an HDBaseT transmission device to send multi-format 4K video and audio signals to 70m/230ft or HD to 100m/328ft, along with control and Ethernet direct to
the display device along a single Cat5e/6 cable for true one-connection content delivery.
Reduce TimeFewer connections not only means less complexity, it also greatly reduces the time for terminating cables, installing
equipment, running wires, testing and troubleshooting.
HDBaseT single-cable transmission technology offers reliable AV distribution that’s faster, easier and more convenient than traditional extenders, enabling integrators to get the job done quicker.

Compatible Projector Brands HDBaseT Wiring Guidance
WyreStorm video distribution systems require a single network cable to be run from each display, back to a central point. Some single wire systems use HDBaseT technology to transmit over 1 x Cat5e/6/7 cable up to a 70m/230ft (Class B 1080p or Class A 4K) or 100m/328ft (Class A 1080p).
Details below are intended to give you a good overview of the standard of wiring needed for a HDBaseT system. For a detailed, official set of guidelines issued by HDBaseT visit www.hdbaset.org.
What is the best type of cable to use?Currently you can use Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6e, Cat6a, Cat7 or Cat7a with WyreStorm HDBaseT products. The baseline cable standard for HDBaseT systems is Cat5e but WyreStorm recommend Cat6 as standard for all its HDBaseT products due to the enhanced cable capabilities and bandwidth experienced with thicker copper core and the resulting easier signal transfer. Although at present Cat7 is not a requirement, the higher grade cable will result in a further benefits in bandwidth and ease of signal transmission that may be useful in future when distributing higher quality content such as 4K and beyond.
In their 2014 guidelines, HDBaseT recommend the following:
HDBaseT Best PracticesCat6 is also a requirement when sending higher resolutions or when the environment is particularly prone to noise and interference.
It is a best practice to use Cat6 when there is any doubt about the environmental factors or what resolution will be transmitted. Cat6 shielded cable will give you the extra confidence and will allow you to deploy in less than optimal physical environments. This also allows for a level of future proofing and an upgrade path toward higher resolutions or other technical specifications that may require a more robust infrastructure cabling system.
DO NOT USE COPPER CLAD ALUMINIUM (CCA) Cat 5/6/7 CABLE FOR HDBASET PRODUCTS.
Whichever network cable type you choose, ensure that the main wiring architecture is ‘solid core’, not stranded ‘patch’ cabling. Patch cabling can be used for the last few metres of a run (say from a wallplate) but should be avoided over the longer runs as signal transfer over stranded cores is heavily reduced.
The use of pre-made leads is not recommended unless you can be absolutely sure of their construction credentials (i.e. solid core 568B)
Shielded cablesUnlike other systems, shielded FTP cable is not a stipulation. If however you preferred this type of cable please ensure compatible shielded accessories are used. Failure to terminate cable screen at all points can induce interference rather than eliminating it.
Best PracticeBest practice advice is to always use a straight piece of cable terminated directly at the Transmission device and display device ends.
HDBaseT with patch panels & wall platesIf the patch panels are terminated correctly and well, there is minimal loss of distance with HDBaseT. The use of wallplates and patch panels always has the potential to cause increased resistance on the cable, introducing ‘pinch points’ for signal transmission and could reduce advertised transmission lengths.
TIP – instead of using RJ45 wallplates, use brush plates instead to maintain the neat finish. A search for “brush plates” will yield many results.
General Troubleshooting AdviceCheck that the Cat cable is not bent, knotted, kinked or distorted in any way that would prevent these high frequency signals from traveling throughout the intended length. Also ensure that the cables as far away from potential sources of EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference ? such as electrical cables, transformers, light fixtures, etc.) as possible. Cables should maintain a 12-inch separation from power cables.
Try re-terminating the RJ45 connectors again, making absolutely sure that every termination is perfect. Ensure that the RJ45 connectors are fully inserted and click locked into place firmly and securely to ensure perfect connector connection
Suggested Installation Do’s and Don’tsDO maintain the twists of the pairs as close as possible to the point of termination, or no more than 0.5″(a half inch) untwisted.
DO make only gradual bends in the cable where necessary to maintain the minimum bend radius of 4 times the cable diameter or approximately 3cm radius.
DO use low-to-moderate force when pulling cable. The standard calls for a maximum of 25 lbf (pounds of force).
DO use cable pulling lubricant for cable runs that may otherwise require great force to install. (You will be amazed at what a difference the cable lubricant will make)
DO keep Category cables as far away from potential sources of EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference ? such as electrical cables, transformers, light fixtures, etc.) as possible. Cables should maintain a 12-inch separation from power cables.
DON’T allow the cable to be sharply bent, twisted, or kinked at any time. This can cause permanent damage to the geometry of the cable and cause transmission failures.
DON’T over-tighten cable ties or use plastic ties.
DON’T EVER splice or bridge Category cable at any point 4.
DON’T use excessive force when pulling cable.
DON’T use oil or any other lubricant not specifically designed for Category network cable pulling as they can infiltrate the cable jacket, causing damage to the insulation.
DON’T tie cables to electrical conduits, or lay cables on electrical fixtures
DON’T install cables taught. A good installation should have the cables loose, but never sagging.
DON’T use staples on Category cable that crimp the cable tightly. The common T-18 and T-25 cable staples are not recommended for Category cable. However, the T-59 insulated staple gun is ideal for fastening both Category and fiber optic cabling, as it does not put any excess pressure on the cable.
DON’T use patch cords (cables) or punch down blocks.
