Objectives
Reduce power consumption in Computer Rooms by 5% a year using a combination of measures:
Air-to-air cooling units (“free” cooling)– more efficient room cooling Cold aisles inside the rooms – more efficient equipment /racks cooling Windows films/replacement, UPS downsizing, efficient lighting – reduce heat
generation Miscellaneous – adjustments to cooling units
Share experience with educational sector and offer a project role to Imperial students.

Background
Our Computer rooms (Data Centres) host around 2,500 servers and support; Imperial College, Natural History Museum, Royal College of Music and Janet-LMN
This project focuses on our primary Data Centre (two main rooms), housed in a traditional 1960’s building. Room 401 PUE = 1.32, Room 402 PUE = 1.52
Annual consumption is circa: 7,500,000 kWh £500,000 4,000 tCO2
Target 5% reduction in annual energy consumption
Extend Cold Aisle containment (further 56 racks)
More efficient lightingFree Air Cooling Option:Supplement Existing Chilled Water
