    ClimateHawksVotedoesnotruleoutbackingRepublicans,butitfocusesonrankingDemocratssincetheygenerallyshowmoreinterestinclimatechange.Thegroupis"notpartisan,buttheRepublicanPartyissodeeplyentrenchedindenyingtheexistenceofclimatechangethatifaRepublicanclimatehawkweretoemerge,wewouldlookhardataRepublican'swillingnesstobuckleadershipaswellastheRepublican'spositiononclimate,"Millersaid.[1][5]Supportwoulddependonnotjustnotdenyinghumancausedclimatechangebuthavingaviableplantodosomethingaboutit.[4]

    In2014,thegroupmadeendorsementsin17races,andtheendorsedcandidateswonin11ofthosedespiteitbeingatoughyearforDemocrats.[7][8]Sen.BrianSchatzofHawaiiwasamongthoseendorsed.Thegrouphasbeencreditedwithperhapsmakingthedifferenceinhisprimaryelectionvictory,whichhadamarginof1,769votes.[4]

    AmongtheracesthatClimateHawksVotedidn'twinwasalongshotbidtohavePaulClementsunseatFredUpton,chairoftheHouseCommitteeonEnergyandCommerce,afterClementsdidsurprisinglywellinonepoll.[9]

    ClimateHawksVoteisnotexpectingtomakeendorsementsforpresidentbeforesummerof2015,butthegroupstatesithopestoseeSen.BernieSanders'"climate[and]solarsensibilitiesincorporatedintoanypresidentialdebate."[10]Thegrouphascalledforpresidentialleadershiponclimatebyrestrictingextractionoffossilfuelsonpublicland,particularlycoalfromthePowderRiverBasinofMontanaandWyoming.[11]

    Sen.BernieSanders'announcementofhispresidentialcandidacycoincidedwiththeClimateHawksVote'sreleaseofitsfirstSenatescorecard,inwhichSanderswasthehighestratedsenatorinthejustcompleted113thCongress.[10][13]ThisratingwasbasedinpartonhismarchingonclimatewithNewYorkersandhissponsorshipofbillsrankedasimportanttothegroup:theClimateProtectionActof2013toimposeacarbonpollutionfeeandtheResidentialEnergySavingsActof2013thatwouldhavemadeloanstostatestoproviderebatesforrooftopsolarsystems.[14][15]OthershighonthelistwereSchatz,Whitehouse,EdMarkey,andBarbaraBoxer.Whitehousetoppedthepreliminarylistforthe114thCongress.[10][16]

    Ontheotherhand,SenateleaderChuckSchumerwasgivenafairlylowscoreandcriticizedbythegroupfornotconnectingclimatechangewithextremeeventssuchasHurricaneSandy.ElizabethWarrenscoredabithigherbutwascriticizedfornotmakingclimateacentralissueexceptforopposingtheKeystoneXLPipeline,leavingher23rdofthe48Democratsscoredinthe113thCongress.Shehasshownsignsofmovingupinthe114thCongress.[16][17][18]
