But need to be

Where The Girls Aren’t —

The numbers speak for themselves. Womenmake up only 10 percent of the engineering work-force. Currently, women represent only 20 per-cent of engineering undergraduates.

“All employers are looking to diversify theirworkforce, and women have some of the greatestopportunities,” says Bill Carroll, Ph.D., dean of theCollege of Engineering at The University of Texasat Arlington. “Now is an excellent time for womento begin pursuing a career in engineering.”

Carroll says girls and young women often failto develop an interest in engineering because offalse notions about their ability to succeed atmath and science, and because of the effects ofhistorical and institutional discrimination.

“It’s all a matter of perception,” he says. “Girlshave to perceive they can be engineers beforethey can be engineers.”

During the next decade, many currentengineers will retire, he adds, and without enoughstudents to replace them, demand will increase.Plus, many of the projects included in theeconomic stimulus package will create even more opportunities for engineers.

“So, with the bad economy, the immediatefuture may be uncertain, but as you look furtherout, engineering is poised for solid growth.”

Opportunities abound as demand increases

The engineering field is as varied asengineers themselves. Consider this:Engineers design and build superstruc-tures and delicate medical instruments;explore for energy and for new worlds inspace; design the environmental controlsfor an art museum and direct global salesof the latest computers. If you’re lookingfor a challenging career, consider theengineering field.

North Texas is home to severaluniversities with nationally recognizedengineering degree programs, and manyarea community colleges provideeducational opportunities that not onlyoffer a smart start but also an economicadvantage.

“Pre-engineering courses are the same

for almost any engineering specialty, somany students take their first two years ofclasses at a community college andsuccessfully transfer to four-year collegesand universities,” says Gerald Suggs withRichland College’s School of Engineeringand Technology. “Classes are smaller, sostudents can receive more personalattention.”

The advantage to starting out at acommunity college, he adds, is thatstudents can gain confidence as theyprepare to transition to other degreeprograms.

A quick overview ofengineering specialties

Aerospace engineers explore outerspace as well as develop commercialairplanes, military jets and helicopters.

Back on land, they also develop groundand sea transportation, including high-speed trains, racing cars and deep-seavessels.

Bioengineers/biomedical engineersdevelop the high-tech procedures anddevices that are the marvel of modernmedicine. And they contribute to thehealth of the planet by developing bettertechnology in the fields of agriculture andenvironmental science.

Chemical engineers do everything fromdeveloping softer clothes and bettercosmetics to producing fire-resistantmaterials and safer foods. They may beinvolved in research at a pharmaceuticalcompany or they could be part of acreative team at a food manufacturingcompany.

Civil engineers get things built. They oversee the construction of thebuildings and infrastructure that make up our world: highways, railways, bridges and water reservoirs.

Computer science engineers areinvolved in a range of activities thatenhance human life — from developingsoftware for managing an air-trafficcontrol tower to producing animation for the movie industry.

Electrical and electronic engineersdevelop components for everything fromMP3 players and roller coasters tomedical tests and communicationssystems. They work on robotics, computer networks, wirelesscommunications and medical imaging —areas that are at the very forefront of

technological innovation.

Environmental engineers look for waysto clean the oceans, rivers and drinkingwater; develop equipment to lessen airpollution; design more effective recyclingsystems; and determine safe ways todispose of toxic waste.

Industrial and manufacturing engineersare involved in organizing people, places, equipment and information to ensure thatcomplex and large-scale systems operatesafely and efficiently.

Materials engineers know thateven the most innovative designcan’t live up to its potential if it’snot made of the right stuff. Theyfocus on the materials.

Mechanical engineers areoften referred to as the generalpractitioners of the engineeringprofession, because they work innearly every area of technology, from aerospace and automotive to

computers and biotechnology.Regardless of your interests,

there are ample opportunities tocombine talents and passions witha career in engineering. Manytraditional, nontraditional andinterdisciplinary fields ofengineering match a variety ofinterests, whether they involvedesign, architecture, law, business, geography, psychology oreducation.

ENGINEERING101Engineers use their imagination and analyticalskills to invent, design and build things thatmatter, according to the National Society ofProfessional Engineers (NSPE). They are teamplayers with independent minds who turn ideasinto reality. By dreaming up creative andpractical solutions, engineers are changingthe world all the time.

Engineering has been called the “invisible”or “stealth” profession, NSPE says. Everythingaround us that we use every day has beenengineered in some way, yet we may not seethe engineers behind the scenes orknow much about engineering.

Today begins National Engineers Week, one of the oldest professional outreach effortsin the U.S. The NSPE aims to raise publicunderstanding and appreciation of the myriadcontributions that engineers make to society.

For a complete list of EngineersWeek activities, visitwww.eweek.org.

Because of their tendency tooften think about thingsholistically, Carroll says, womenexcel in engineering. “Our bio-medical, civil and industrialengineering programs are popularwith women, but there are manyother engineering specialties thatwomen do major in and succeed.”

“Everything you see around

you or use every day isengineered,” he says. “So weneed more women in theworkforce because they’re realproblem-solvers. I think the keymessage is that engineering is abroad field encompassing manydifferent disciplines that needsand embraces a diverseworkforce.”
