Materials engineers know thateven the most innovative designcan’t live up to its potential if it’snot made of the right stuff. Theyfocus on the materials.

Mechanical engineers areoften referred to as the generalpractitioners of the engineeringprofession, because they work innearly every area of technology, from aerospace and automotive to

computers and biotechnology.Regardless of your interests,

there are ample opportunities tocombine talents and passions witha career in engineering. Manytraditional, nontraditional andinterdisciplinary fields ofengineering match a variety ofinterests, whether they involvedesign, architecture, law, business, geography, psychology oreducation.

ENGINEERING101Engineers use their imagination and analyticalskills to invent, design and build things thatmatter, according to the National Society ofProfessional Engineers (NSPE). They are teamplayers with independent minds who turn ideasinto reality. By dreaming up creative andpractical solutions, engineers are changingthe world all the time.

Engineering has been called the “invisible”or “stealth” profession, NSPE says. Everythingaround us that we use every day has beenengineered in some way, yet we may not seethe engineers behind the scenes orknow much about engineering.

Today begins National Engineers Week, one of the oldest professional outreach effortsin the U.S. The NSPE aims to raise publicunderstanding and appreciation of the myriadcontributions that engineers make to society.

For a complete list of EngineersWeek activities, visitwww.eweek.org.

Because of their tendency tooften think about thingsholistically, Carroll says, womenexcel in engineering. “Our bio-medical, civil and industrialengineering programs are popularwith women, but there are manyother engineering specialties thatwomen do major in and succeed.”

“Everything you see around

you or use every day isengineered,” he says. “So weneed more women in theworkforce because they’re realproblem-solvers. I think the keymessage is that engineering is abroad field encompassing manydifferent disciplines that needsand embraces a diverseworkforce.”
