Join me on a journey to some of the least-explored regions of Indochina: Burma (Myanmar)
and Laos. Relatively new to tourism, these two fascinating Buddhist lands offer a vast array of
dazzling historical sites and natural splendors. We begin in the Burmese capital of Rangoon with
a visit to the Shwedagon Pagoda at sunsetan ethereal complex of striking golden-spired temples
and a mecca for Burmese Buddhists. In fabled Mandalay we explore its superb wooden architec-
ture, pagodas, monasteries, and tapestry workshops, then board a restored colonial riverboat for
a cruise down the Irrawaddy River to the 11th-century capital of Pagan. Comprised of literally
thousands of temples, we visit many stunning ancient examples, including revered reliquaryshrines, a glistening whitewashed Mon temple, and a Bamar-style brick pagoda. Additional high-
lights and a phenomenon found nowhere else in the world, are the floating gardens of Inle Lake,
as well as the unique boaters who row dexterously with their legs, and a lakeside cave housing
thousands of Buddha images.
As we continue toward Laos, enjoy two nights atAntantara Golden Triangle Resort, one of the
most luxurious spa resorts in all of ailand. A two-day cruise into the rarely visited heart of
inner Laos down the Mekong River offers a view of daily rural life and we visit colorful markets
where we have the opportunity to meet the lovely minority tribes-people. We also stop to explorethe famed Buddhist caves at Pak Ou and spend a night right along the banks of the Mekong at a
serene teakwood lodge. Our cruise finishes in the charming town of Luang Prabang, once home
to the royal family. Its palace, pagodas, lovely temples, and truly exotic markets make this World
Heritage Site Laos top attraction. Our last stop is the capital of Vientiane, where an unforgettable
experience awaits us as we explore the citys monuments, temples, and markets. As one of the first
tour leaders to some of these regions, I look forward to sharing my knowledge and passion for the
natural and cultural wonders that we explore. Most of all, it will surely be the encounters with
the welcoming people who make this magical corner of the world an unforgettable and highly
meaningful experience.
Warmest regards,
Gary Wintz

is is a journey for experienced travelers only. Participants on our departure to Burma and
Laos should be aware that the infrastructure is poorly developed, and occasional delays and
amendments to the program can occur. Accommodations will range from five-star elegance
to bright, cheerful, and rustic in the more-remote areas. Some days will also be long, with
bus rides over bumpy roads and boat journeys that require sitting for long periods. For a
traveler with a sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and desire to journey where few have been
before, the occasional delay or poor hotel is a small price to pay for a journey that will take
you to the heart of Burma and Laos.
WHAT TO EXPECT
MEET OUR LEADER:
GARY WINTZ
Gary graduated cum laude from Duns Scotus College in Michigan with a degree in philosophy.
He has spent most of the past 30 years outside the USA researching, writing, photographing,
and lecturing about distant lands and cultures, and has traveled to over 215 countries
and territories.
Today, Gary is widely recognized as an expert on Asia. He is a lecturer, writer, photographer,
and tour leader and has worked on humanitarian projects in Indochina, Indonesia, and
Bangladesh. In 1982 he was employed by Tibet University in Lhasa, thus becoming one of the
first Westerners to actually reside in Tibet since the Communist Chinese occupation, and he has
met with His Holiness the Dalai Lama many times.
Gary has been visiting Burma since 1977, and was among the very first tour leaders to visit
Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Since then he has made more than 50 visits to this area,
accompanying such diverse groups as journalists, investors, humanitarian project developers,
and tourists. He has also lectured on many cruise ships that visit the area and has guest lectured
on Indochina at many universities. He is a member of the Association of Asian Studies (AAS)
and participates in archaeological, academic, and humanitarian projects related to Indochina,
including the Burma Studies Group and the ailand/Laos/Cambodia Studies Group of
the AAS.
Gary enjoys good connections in the countries we will visit, and it is not uncommon for him
to invite a guest speaker of distinction to perhaps join us for a lunch or an informal talk in
the evenings. He has a genuine love of people and their culture, and is able to infuse all thosearound him with the same joy and enthusiasm for meeting and interacting with our fellow
human beings.
