Parish Council Notes – Council Meeting 3rd October 2018
World War I Commemoration Event 10th/11
th November: Please see the
separate article in this edition, (page 12 & 13), for details of the commemoration event. The Council’s web-site provides details of the event timetable, together with a comprehensive history of Major General Johnson.
First Aid Courses: Cotswold First Aid will be running two free first aid training courses at the Community Centre in November. There has been a lot of com-ment on social media recently relating to the lack of Community First Respond-ers in this area, and this is an ideal opportunity for residents to acquire basic first aid knowledge, and possibly go on to become a Community First Responder. We’re grateful to Cotswold First Aid for providing this training at no cost - please see the separate article in this edition, (page 2), for details of the courses, and how to register.
Community Centre: Works to refurbish windows and guttering are now largely complete. Works will begin in October to repair leaks to various elevations to the roof of the main building and replace different sections, as and where neces-sary. This urgent work will help to extend the useful life of the Centre and en-sure it can continue to play a role in the community for years to come. The Council will consider whether the next phase of works can be funded in 2019-20 as part of the ongoing programme of maintenance.
Youth: The Baptist Church has kindly agreed for the Hall to act as an indoor venue for Winter Outreach sessions (whereby youth workers engage with young people around the village on the topics that matter to them). These sessions will take place between 5.30 and 7.30pm on various Wednesdays throughout the Winter – please see the Council’s web-site for details of dates.
Foul water network: At a recent meeting with Thames Water various proposals were discussed which are part of Thames Water’s ongoing programme of im-provements to the local network. It’s anticipated that modifications to the Rissington Rd pumping station system will greatly reduce the need for tankering activity in future; various works to line existing pipes are also planned which will reduce the extent of surface water infiltration into the foul water system.
Police: One of the current Police priority initiatives is that of County Lines, which aims to increase protection for vulnerable residents in the Cotswolds. Residents are asked to refer to the information provided on Glos. Constabulary’s web-site and see how they can play a part by keeping an eye out for vulnerable neighbours. https://www.gloucestershire.police.uk/operations/operation-tarak/
Glos Live web-site also provides information on activities relating to Cotswolds arrests:https://www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/news/cheltenham-news/gloucestershire-county-lines-drug-offenders-2018529

First Aid Training
Cotswold First Aid has very kindly
agreed to run two free 2-hour basic first
aid training sessions from 7.00-9.00pm
in the Community Centre on:
Monday 12th
& Tuesday 20th
November
They will run the same session twice so
interested residents should only attend
on one of the dates. The training will
cover:
• Unconscious but breathing patient
• Unconscious not breathing patient
(CPR)
• Using an AED
• Choking
• Bleeding
These are potentially life-saving skills
which can make all the difference in an
emergency. It’s hoped that residents
who attend this training may consider
putting themselves forward for the role
of Community First Responder with
South Western Ambulance Service who
will be looking to recruit new CFRs for
the Bourton area in January. Commu-
nity First Responders (CFRs) respond to
emergency calls and provide life-saving
first aid in those vital minutes before an
ambulance arrives. CFRs are trained to
assess the situation, provide immediate
first aid if needed, and establish the pa-
tient’s medical history; they can also be
a very useful second pair of hands to an
ambulance crew. Having someone in
the community who has been trained in
first aid and can reach the patient
quickly can make all the difference to
helping save lives and improve patient
outcomes.
There has been much comment recently
on social media regarding ambulance
response times in this area. Concerned
residents are therefore encouraged to
come forward and help boost team
numbers (there is only one volunteer
First Responder for the Bourton area).
We’re grateful to Cotswold First Aid for
giving up their time and it’s hoped their
efforts will be rewarded with a good
attendance. Interested residents should
contact the Council on 01451 820712 to
book a place.

TOPAZ November’s Birthstone
Topaz is found in many colours including white, brown, pink and green. The most prized is a magnificent orange with pink undertones. “Blue” once rare is now common due to our ability to enhance the colour. The Egyptians
and Romans believed Topaz protected and healed.

IRENE’S CHARITY KNITTING CIRCLE
During September we collected together
all the items knitted/crocheted ready to
take to our Distribution Centre in Telford.
We had a wonderful selection of items
and loaded the car with these as shown
in the accompanying photograph and delivered them just before
departing on our holiday to France. In the meantime our thanks
go to the members who deputised for us at the October meet-
ing.
Now that winter is upon us we will be knitting/crocheting items
for the months ahead including blankets, warm sweaters,
scarves hats & wrist warmers. Also, with Christmas not far
away, we will be providing some knitted toys and clothing items
for the local Community Awareness Charity that provides items
for the most needy families, less fortunate than ourselves, who
live in the North Cotswolds area. For further information about
our activities contact:

Bourton-on-the-Water Women’s Institute
Our meeting on 9th
October was a really enter-
taining social evening – which we do a couple of
times a year as it gives us a good opportunity to
chat to other members, refreshments are served and a differ-
ent fun thing to do is chosen.
This time it was Bingo – something a lot of us had not done
for ages; and one or two not at all!
Our caller was Janet Stenton who threw herself into calling
the numbers with “gusto”. There were prizes to be won and
lots of laughter to be had.
If you have not yet tried coming to a W.I. meeting give it a
whirl, we have fun-nights, speaker-nights, trips and lunches
out, all totally enjoyable. Don’t miss out, come along and
meet us.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 13th
November at 7.00 p.m. It
is our A.G.M. and we have a guest speaker – Jan Long talking
on the traveller, archaeologist and writer Gertrude Bell. A
warm welcome awaits. Jenny Jacob.

Too Many Tourists?
My name is David Hutchman and I read
with interest the item “WITH TONGUE
IN CHEEK” regarding the absence of
grass in The Bourton Browser, Septem-
ber 2018.
Like JMM, I too have strong views in
regards to the absence of grass as a
result of far too many visitors to Bour-
ton-on-the-Water. In speaking with
other local people there appears to be
growing strong feelings in regards to the
very large number of visitors to our
rather small village. Bourton may be
known as `The Venice of The Cotswolds`
but unfortunately it is much smaller
than Venice itself.
I run a B & B in Bourton and there is
increasing negative feedback from
guests who liked to visit the village be-
cause of its tranquil and relaxing atmos-
phere. Now they find place has become
Bourton Roadrunners
Angels 10k. On a wet and cool morn-
ing, the Angels 10k took place at Ashle-
worth, Gloucester, but within a short
time the rain had stopped. The course
was undulating and very well mar-
shalled. Mike Smith was the first Bour-
ton Roadrunner home in 4th overall
position and winning MV50, plus a prize
in 37:43, having battled with Glouces-
ter’s Jeremy Mower. Close on his heels
was Darren Long, 1st MV45, plus a prize
in 38:28. Another excellent run saw
Niamh Shoemark win the LV50 cate-
gory and also a prize in 41:47. Chasing
was Martin Cook, finishing in 42:15.
Chris Lomax and Ben Montilla had their
own battle with Chris coming out on
top in 46:34 and 46:55 respectively.
With only his 3rd race of the year Brian
Hulcup finished in 51:06 and to bring
home the roadrunners, Liz Hulcup, 2nd
LV65 in 52:19.
St. Andrews Fun Run and 5k Trail Run -
16th September. Bourton Roadrunners
were well represented, raising funds for
the local primary school, St Andrew,
Chedworth. The fun run was guided
round by Britain’s Common-
wealth Games runner Matt Shone; a
sub-four minute mile runner, who
sportingly encouraged the second place
runner, Bourton Junior Kian Dee who
also won the under-13 boy’s
prize. In the 5k trail run, Matt was
joined by CLC Strider’s Will Fer-
guson to add additional fire-power.
While the two runners set about pro-
viding a master class, Bourton Junior
Jake Astor was also impressing in his
first competitive 5k race, finishing 3rd
overall and 1st senior man under 17;
keep an eye out for this name in years
to come.
Great North Run - 9th September. Sun-
day 16th
September was the 38th
run-
ning of the Great North Run, a half
marathon from Newcastle to South
Shields. Linda Edwards, who hails from
Geordie-land herself and a frequent
runner of the event, was joined by club
mate John Gibson. They ran in the
crowded and hot conditions, over a
deceptively hilly course that finishes
along the windy seafront at South
Shields. Cheered-on by the many thou-
sands of locals plus family members in
support, the two were satisfied with
the 2 hours and 11 minutes running,
accompanied by plenty of chat about
nothing in particular and the annoying
sounds of loose change (for post-race
chips) in John’s back pocket.
John Gibson
over whelmed with day trippers. In the
main, the majority of these visitors come
by coach, minibus or cars. One day I
counted twenty coaches in Station Road
car park, so assuming 60 passengers per
coach that would be 1200 passengers. Add
to this the increasing availability of car
parking in the following:- 1) Station Road
Garage car park. 2) The field almost oppo-
site the garage. 3) C.D.C car park in
Rissington Road. 4) Bourton Cricket
ground car parking which is opposite to
the C.D.C. car park. 5) Bourton School
grounds, all offering car parking. Add to
this, all the on-road parking in side roads
and streets throughout the village.
I walked through Rye Close and adjacent
roads one weekend and there was a con-
tinuous line of visiting cars that were
parked nose to tail in such a way that it
was impossible for local residents to safely
drive without encountering a position
where there was no passing places. In ad-
dition there have been numerous cases of
visitor’s completely blocking people’s
driveways thus stopping them from either
entering or leaving their premises. An-
other parking factor is that of visitors just
simply parking on grass verges irrespective
of the damage to the grass.
What I would like to find out from Bourton
Browser readers is how they feel about
the above. Are they as concerned as me
and would they like to see some sort of
formal approach to Cotswold District
Council and the Parish Council. I do feel
there is a need to reduce the number of
vehicles and visitors coming into the vil-
lage so as to allow local people to be able
to access their village all year and not just
the autumn and winter. To be able to actu-
ally see the village green never mind just a
blade of grass would make a change.
If you feel you would like to respond to me
you can contact me via email
[email protected] or write to

local businesses. Turnout was good
with a number of local retailers coming
along. We shared some great ideas and
had very useful discussions about what
we can do to turn Bourton into a de-
mentia friendly village.
As the last session took place early in
the morning and not everyone who
wanted to attend was able to make it,
we have scheduled a second session on
26th
November from 5.30pm to
6.30pm at the George Moore Commu-
nity Centre in Bourton. This time the
session is not just for local retailers but
open to the whole community of Bour-
ton and surrounding villages (all ages).
Everyone who is interested to learn
more about dementia and/or would
like to help us on our way to a demen-
tia friendly village is very welcome!
Dementia can affect all of us and the
number of people living with this ter-
minal and long-term illness is rising.
There are estimated to be over 1,500
people aged 65 and over living with
dementia in Cotswold District and this
is forecast to rise by almost two thirds
to 2,500 in 2030. It, therefore, is so
important to learn more about demen-
tia and to transform the way we think,
act and talk about this condition which
is not a normal part of aging and so
much more than just memory loss.
Please do come along on 26th
Novem-
ber and join a friendly and very infor-
mal session. No booking required.
Refreshments will be available from
5.15pm. We look forward to meeting
you!

Message from the Church
Autumn
Autumn has always been my favourite
time of the year, it is not too cold, like in
the winter, and it is not too hot, like the
summer (especially this year), forgive me
if I sound a bit like Goldilocks!
Then there is the beautiful array
of colours and the fact that the
harvests have been gathered in
and we can celebrate the amaz-
ing supply that God gives to us.
Autumn can also suggest
difficult ideas though, as
we see the leaves fall
from the trees, and the
animals and birds either leaving for
warmer climates or preparing to hiber-
nate, we can perhaps start to get a little
melancholy and think about our own
autumn, and the fact that we too are
slowing down.
The question becomes, how do we face
the autumn? Do we just give in and say
something like, “my best days are be-
hind me” or do we embrace the new
season with new opportunities and ex-
periences?
It has been said that the only constant in
life is change! As a Christian I do not
believe that this is com-
pletely true, since the Bible
tells us that God is always
the same. Perhaps more
importantly though, He cares
for us deeply, no matter what stage of
life we may be at, and He has a purpose
for us in this constantly changing crea-
tion of His.
I wonder today as you read this, do you
know what your purpose is at this stage
of your life? If you are unsure or indeed
if you have a good idea but are not cer-
tain how to live in that knowledge, may I
encourage you to spend some time with
God and allow Him to lead you through
the ever changing, and perhaps leaf cov-
ered, paths of life.

Hello Young Bourtonians,
As I sit here writing this, the wind is howling and the rain is
lashing down! I think Autumn has arrived! Despite the
weather there are still many things to do outside.
Why not go horse riding or pop along to Grey-
stones to really enjoy nature? Whatever you do,
take care and enjoy yourselves
Have a Nifty November!

Everything is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious….the songs, the
costumes and the chimney sweep props for this classic musical
are popping up everywhere, from backstage at lunchtimes, to
drama and music lessons. We are looking forward to this event,
taking place over three days, 6th, 7th, and 8th November at The
Cotswold School. Ticket information as below.
At The Cotswold School, we pride ourselves on the multitude of
trips, excursions and expeditions. We believe the amount pupils
learn away from the classroom and in real-life situations is sig-
nificant, and this way of maximising teaching now permeates
each subject: -
- Year 7 have enjoyed their residential English trips to the Chel-
tenham Literary Festival and History trips to Goodrich Castle.
- Year 9 travelled to the Battlefields in France. This trip always
proves to be a thought provoking trip, and more notably this
year, as we look to mark the centenary of the end of World War
I.
- Our English students have watched plays including The Lovely
Bones, The Unreturning, Othello and An Inspector Calls – the
beauty of having Cheltenham, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon and
Birmingham all in easy reach.
- Our first-ever Sports trip to Sri Lanka was hailed a success
with teams in Rugby, Netball, Football, Hockey and Cricket trav-
elling to this island.
- Year 12 visited Oxstalls Campus in Gloucester where they had
a tour of the campus followed by different sessions. A Level
Design and Textiles students travelled to London to visit the
V&A museum and Art visited galleries in London and Oxford.
- Over half-term students visited China – a trip that takes place
every two years - this is now the fourth visit. Students from
across the years spend time in Beijing and Shanghai and in
Suzhou with our partner school.
- We welcomed students from Miesbach, Bavaria for the week-
long annual German exchange.
CALENDAR DATES:
- Mary Poppins will be flying in on 6th, 7th, 8th November and
tickets are now on sale, please visit https://
cotswold.gloucs.sch.uk/events/ for further information.
- The Sixth Form Open Evening is on Thursday 15th November,
6.30 pm to 8.00 pm in the new Sixth Form
For more information, visit https://cotswold.gloucs.sch.uk/

Over the Summer the stables offered a HEAVILY subsidised
riding club to new participants for only £5 a session! Thanks to
its success we will be running a similar club again next year,
but in the meantime will be offering shorter subsidised
courses to new riders aged 12 – 25 years. The course will start
on Saturday 10th
November 2pm – 4pm and run for 6 weeks.
As well as riding, participants will also learn the “on the
ground” skills and will be expected to “Muck in and muck
out”- Places are strictly limited and at only £30 for the course,
we expect to fill up fast!
This time we are also opening up a separate riding course for
juniors that will run alongside
our existing “Free Fridays”
that run 4pm – 5pm term
time. Priority will be given to
our Saddle Club members and
will be a 6 week starter course
from Friday 9th
November for
7 – 12 year olds.
We no longer get any funding
for these sessions so they run purely on the goodwill of the
stables and some volunteers. To ensure the ongoing continu-
ity for the club, sponsorship is very welcome!

Primary School News At Bourton on the Water Primary School we CARE and our pu-
pils have outdone themselves already this term.
CHALLENGE
We are so proud of all of our pupils
but we are particularly proud of
our new reception intake, who
have settled in so quickly. The pu-
pils in Reception have taken to full
time education with ease and are
already amazing us with their man-
ners, hard work and attitude.
AMAZE
On Thursday 21st
September we fi-
nally revealed our new hall and en-
trance area to the community and
parents. We were lucky enough to be
joined by Adam Henson, who for-
mally opened the building, alongside
head teacher, John Jones and Chair of Gov-
ernors, Giles Hyland. Parents then spent the
morning exploring the work that had been
going on in classes, as well as the beautiful
new building.
RESPECT
We have had an amazing start to the term
with a whole school topic titled, ‘The Armi-
stice’, in which we have covered many differ-
ent aspects of World War 1. Some particular
highlights were the Year 5 and Year 6 projects
on the soldiers of WW1 who lived and grew
up in Bourton on the Water. The children
made sculptures to represent the 27 soldiers
and researched their lives. They then went on
to make documentaries about Dudley Gra-
ham Johnson, who grew up in Bourton on the Water, and went
on to be awarded a Victoria Cross for his brave actions. The
Year 6 pupils are also lucky enough to be going to Belgium in
November for a special commemoration ceremony for him.
Year 1 and 2 focused on the different
roles men and women had during the
war.
ENJOY
The pupils have also been lucky
enough to have had a visit from a
string quartet, which played a variety
of classical and jazz style music; this was a fantastic opportunity
to listen to such talented musicians and hopefully inspire some
future ‘Beethovens’. The school is now looking forward to put-
ting on the Harvest festival in the local church, which is always
a fun- packed musical event.

There is exciting wildlife news, with the
barn owls returning to Greystones. Visi-
tors can see them through our remote
camera in the Discovery Barn, which is
open every Thursday, Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, 10am until 4pm.
We’ve been looking at what else we can
offer visitors now that the winter is with
us and are delighted that our series of
evening storytelling events has now
started. Once a month a professional sto-
ryteller enthrals visitors with tales around
the fire in our cosy replica Iron Age round-
house. Hot drinks are available, and the
café is also open.
Nature Tots Our events for children will
be continuing in the winter, encouraging
them to love being outdoors and to learn
about the wildlife around them. Our Na-
ture Tots sessions for pre-school children
are very popular, so do book your place in
advance via our website gloucester-
shirewildlifetrust.co.uk. The next one
takes place on 9th
November.
Warm up in the café The café is open
every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sun-
day, 10am until 4pm and provides a
peaceful retreat close to the village cen-
tre. We are serving freshly made snacks
along with good-quality tea, coffee and
hot chocolate. As well as a classic cream
tea we also offer savoury afternoon teas:
two scones, ham, local cheese and a drink
for £5.
Gardening volunteers Thank you to eve-
ryone who came along to our recent Vol-
unteers’ Fair, it was really good to meet
so many people who are ready to help
Greystones to thrive. If you’re a keen gar-
dener, we’d particularly like to hear from
you as we’re looking to develop our wild-
life gardens.

Hedgehogs, Hibernation & Bonfire
Safety Checks
Recent research by the British Hedge-
hog Preservation Society (BHPS) and
the People’s Trust for Endangered Spe-
cies indicates that hedgehog popula-
tions in rural areas like ours have fallen
by a shocking 50% since the turn of the
last century. This is in no small part
down to the loss of habitat – the re-
moval of hedgerows, the fencing off of
our gardens, as well as the use of pesti-
cides (this includes slug pellets), injuries
from garden equipment and changes in
farming methods etc. With bonfire
night and Halloween fast approaching,
there’s another hazard these small crea-
tures can fall victim to – our bonfires.
However, we can all take simple actions
to ensure any hogs that we’re lucky
enough to have in our area, don’t get
caught up in the flames:
• We can make sure that we only
build our bonfires on the day we

plan to light them and
• We can double check hedgehogs (or
other wildlife) hasn’t snuck under our
‘cosy’ wood piles before lighting
them.
If building a fire in the days before it is to
be lit is unavoidable, the BHPS suggest
using a tight knit mesh (mess too small
for creatures to get stuck in) around the
lower sections of the fire and, then a cou-
ple of hours before the fire’s to start, use
a blunt wooden pole (or similar) to go
around the fire carefully lifting the base
sections of the wood to double check
that no creatures have snuck inside.
November through to March is typically
when hedgehogs seek out a place to hi-
bernate making it even more important
that we check our bonfire piles ahead of
our bonfire events.
If you were to find an injured or sick
hedgehog, there are at least 2 local wild-
life sanctuaries that offer specialist care
for hedgehogs. The general guidance is
that hedgehogs seen out in broad day
light should be checked to ensure they’re
a healthy hibernation weight and free
from injuries to ensure they have the best
chance of making through the winter
months. For further information on this
or other hedgehog -related questions, the
BHPS website offers some excellent infor-
mation and links. Closer to home, the

Hello. We would like to introduce our-
selves to the Bourton community. We are
two sisters, Sarah & Caroline, who have
taken over a cafe in Moore Rd, and are
working very hard to make it a lovely,
warm and inviting cafe for the friendly
community of Bourton.
We have fantastic local produce
(supporting local farms, growers & suppli-
ers), we play lovely swing/jazz style music,
our smiles are huge and laughter is always
on the menu. We offer local loyalty
cards, reduced coffee & tea prices (quote
“ I’m a local” ), we welcome Pooches (just
as long as their owners are well-
behaved?), and will help & support the
community in any way we can.
We are also able to offer the cafe for pri-
vate hire for small events (perhaps David’s

Julie Ritchie Small is Beautiful - Alpines
This is a meeting which is always hugely
enjoyable. It was unfortunate that it
coincided with the induction of the new
Rector, which meant we had no Chair-
man for the meeting, but our President,
Sheila, took over and introduced Jim
Teague as Quiz Master. He brought
with him plenty of challenges, and
sadly showed up our deficiencies in
Latin. But it was interesting how we
were all pretty much equal in our
knowledge, although we do have some
very expert members who carried the
day. Jim, you will remember, works for
the Blue Diamond Garden Centres, and
he brought with him the latest in bright
ideas - a rosemary bush trained as a
Christmas tree!
The plant swop table was full of great
plants. Everything was really good,
and made for a problem with that first
choice of one plant each. I settled for
the cyclamen hederifolium (a bit of
show off here!) as I could guarantee to
shoehorn it in somewhere. But as luck
would have it, I still had to bring home
all the leftovers. Fortunately all good,
but require space... oh dear.
Next month the talk will be about al-
pines, which, if Julie brings samples for
sale, will at least be small, if temptation
strikes. The competition will be
‘Shades of Autumn’. I hope there will
still be a few.

RINGING OUT FOR PEACE
When the bells rang out on 11th
Novem-
ber 1918 they announced the end of the
most catastrophic war the world had yet
seen. At that time, bells were at the heart
of the community, marking events of
great significance and as a means of com-
munication long before modern technol-
ogy connected us. At the end of the war,
many people heard about the Armistice
through bell ringing.
Many bell ringers joined the war effort,
and many lost their lives. Just after the
war, the Central Council of Church Bell
Ringers (CCCBR) wrote to all bell towers
to compile the Roll of Honour. At the
time a thousand men were reported as
lost. During the First World War Centen-
ary the CCCBR has been reviewing this list
and has discovered a further 400 bell
ringers who died in service. In total 1,400
bell ringers lost their lives. A loss to them
and their families. A loss to communities.
To mark the final year of the First World
War centenary commemorations, it was
hoped that 1,400 new bell ringers would
be recruited in honour of the 1,400 who
lost their lives during the First World
War. Two of those newly recruited ring-
ers are at St Lawrence Church in Bourton-
on-the-Water. They are 13 and 14- year-
old brothers who are working on their
Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. They
say, however, that bell ringing is such
great fun, that they will surely stay on
after their requirements for the award
have been completed.
On 11th
November 2018, 100 years since
Armistice, bells will ring out in unison
from churches and cathedrals in villages,
towns and cities across the country. Lis-
ten out at 7:05 p.m. for our Bourton bells.

Bourton Browser Team News Bourton Browser Team News Bourton Browser Team News Bourton Browser Team News Thanks to our new volunteer deliverers who have kindly taken
on two out of the three vacant rounds mentioned last month.
Could you take on the one outstanding round? It is the back 1/2
of The Furrows, (also known as the Honeystones estate), it’s the
first turning on the right if you are coming into Station Rd from
the Fosse. There are 48 houses in the round. You do not need
to live in that road to take on the delivery. The job simply in-
volves delivering copies of the Browser to each property once a
month. A bundle of Browsers would be delivered to you usually
during the last week of the old month. If you would be inter-
ested in helping please contact Rob and Christine on 01451
810724. It would be lovely to finish the year with “a full house”!
If you are involved with a group who has regular monthly
events/meetings, please email us a copy of your 2019 pro-
gramme ASAP to ensure your events continue to appear in
“Diary Dates” or “Out and Abouts”. Remember we will be start-
ing work on January’s ‘19 Browser in early December ‘18!!
Keep watching our website for updates throughout the month.
Also keep sending in your diary dates for forthcoming events
throughout 2018 & 2019 so we can add them to the online vil-
lage diary which is accessible through the website:

year and we were delighted to welcome an-
other 17 new members (probably more by the time you read
this!). We will be holding a New Members Meeting on 27th
November so they can meet some of the committee and get
to know more about what we do. Invitations will be sent out.
There’s lots going on this month with all the usual Interest
Group meetings and the Theatre Group going to see “Trial by
Laughter” on 15th
November in Cheltenham.
Members are reminded that if they wish to attend our Christ-
mas Party, “The Christmas Cracker “ on 12th
December (full
details in the autumn newsletter) they need to RSVP to Steve
and Myra Ford by 15th
November at the latest, email eth-
[email protected] Likewise any Groups wishing to per-
form at the party must contact the Ford’s by the same date.
With the winter coming on maybe you are looking for some
new hobbies and interests? If you are in your “third age” i.e.
the time after full time work and or child rearing, do come to
our monthly meeting (see page 2). We have 40+ interest
groups, see the website for a full list. We welcome men and
women, couples and singles. We are non-political and non-
denominational. If you are new to the area, newly retired or
newly alone it is a great way to make friends.

The Visitor
on the Bridge
Will he go to the left or the right?
How can I keep him in my sight?
He slowly ambles across the road,
taking pictures by the load,
I sound my horn toot, toot, toot,
but he does not notice or care a hoot.
I am learning patience by the score,
but how much longer must I endure
this game of skittles in the road
has he not heard of the Highway Code?!
