The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the result of fi ne engineering – always setting the benchmark because it is based on much more

than engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW EfficientDynamics. It includes the visionary CleanEnergy hydrogen-powered engine,

already used in a number of completely emission-free BMW 7 Series saloons. Also going into production soon is the BMW ActiveHybrid – an

intelligent, demand-oriented engine combining combustion and electronics. And every BMW already includes a technology package as

standard that boosts dynamics even further whilst simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

High Precision Injection

In this cutting-edge generation of petrol direct

injection, the Piezo injectors are positioned

very close to the spark plugs. They inject the

fuel at high pressure and with extreme

precision. With the four-cylinder models

the injectors’ central positioning means only

part of the combustion chamber needs to be

fi lled with an ignitable petrol-air mixture. The

engine can then run “leanly” and so effi ciently,

precisely in the heavily used moderate load

range. (118i, 120i, 135i)

Auto Start/Stop function

BMW four-cylinder engines with 6-speed

manual transmission automatically shut down

when the vehicle is stationary, for example at

a red light or in a jam, when the driver activates

the clutch and switches to neutral. The engine

restarts as soon as the clutch is activated

again. This innovation significantly reduces

fuel consumption especially in city traffic.

Brake Energy Regeneration

To supply a battery with electrical energy,

the generator (alternator) is customarily

driven using engine power, which demands

permanent fuel consumption. Brake Energy

Regeneration means the generator usually

only generates electricity when the driver

either takes the foot off the accelerator or

brakes – previously unused kinetic energy is

transformed in coasting mode into electrical

energy before being fed into the battery. In this

way, electricity is generated while coasting,

without consuming fuel. (All models)

Electrical steering

In comparison with conventional, hydraulic

steering systems, the electrical steering only

uses energy during actual steering. When the

steering wheel position is constant – for

example at high speed along the motorway –

the electronic motor is inactive. (118i, 120i,

125i, 120d)

Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance

While driving, tyres are constantly changing

shape. This uses up energy and thus fuel.

Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have an

improved design and use special materials for

their road treads and side walls, thus

reducing deformation. (118i, 120i, 125i,

120d)

Air vent control

Engine management signals the engine’s

current cooling capacity requirements

constantly while driving. Rendering a

permanent airstream through the radiator

unnecessary. The air vents in front of the

radiator open or close depending on the

environmental temperature and road speed.

When shut they improve aerodynamics,

shorten the engine’s warm-up time and so

reduce fuel consumption. (118i, 120i, 125i,

120d)

Shift Point Display

Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective

and easiest ways to save fuel. This is where

Shift Point Display in conjunction with 6-speed

manual transmission comes in. It shows the

driver what gear to use in order to drive more

effi ciently. (All models)

And this is what’s come out of it.

BMW already offers 21 models with CO2

emissions of 140 g/km and signifi cantly less.

But that’s just for starters. We’re carrying on

our research – in the quest to bring you more

driving pleasure and less consumption.

o Lights package comprises vicinity lights,

which upon unlocking the doors illuminates

the area outside the doors for 20 seconds

to enable safe vehicle access in the dark.

Also included: reading lights front and rear,

footwell illumination at the front, vanity mirror

lights for driver and front passenger and

ambient lighting.

o Xenon headlights for high and low beam,

incl. daytime driving lights, headlight washing

system, four light rings and automatic headlight

range control, for better road illumination at

night or in bad weather.

o Adaptive headlights incl. turning lights,

only in conjunction with Xenon headlights,

incl. Adaptive headlights: optimal and prompt

illumination of bends through electromechanical

control of the moveable lamps as soon as the

driver turns.

o Fog lights (standard on 125i, not available

on 135i) integrated in the front apron ensure

extra safety in poor visibility. Option includes

exterior mirror heating and screen washer

nozzles (heated on 125i and 135i).

s Rear light with LED indicators: each taillight

is made up of three separate high performance

LED strips, accentuating the tailgate’s dynamic

feel.

s Brake Force Display helps vehicles travelling

behind you to evaluate your braking more

accurately. In the event of an emergency stop,

the illuminated area of the brake lights is

increased. So traffic following behind can tell

in an instant the difference between a light

tap on the brake pedal and a hard stop – for

increased driving safety.

o Trailer tow hitch with removable ballhead

(not available on 135i).

o Rain sensor including automatic

driving lights control: Once activated, the

rain sensor will automatically switch on the

windscreen wipers when it begins to rain,

adjusting the wiper frequency in line with

rainfall intensity. The integrated automatic

driving lights control activates the low beam

automatically at dusk and in tunnels.

s Rear windscreen is heated, made of

scratch- and dirt-resistant glass and

guarantees a clear view at all times.

o Wind deflector allows for comfortable

top-down driving without draughts and

annoying turbulence around the shoulders

and neck. The wind deflector is easy to use

and can be folded and stowed away in the

luggage compartment to save space.

s Door sill with BMW lettering and polished

chrome inlay (only on 125i and 135i).

s Exterior mirrors, painted in body colour, with

electric adjustment, aspheric, heated on125i

and 135i.

o Satin Chrome, high-gloss includes the

surrounds of the A-pillar, window recess

finishers and folding top cover, as well as the

mirror triangle and mirror frame finished in

Black, high-gloss.

o Chrome Line Exterior includes chrome

trim for the A-pillar, window recess finishers,

folding top cover and belt guide point. The

door sills with chrome inlay, the mirror triangle

and mirror frame are in Black, high gloss

(standard on 125i and 135i).

s Soft-top features multi-layered lining and

integrates harmoniously into the shape of the

convertible (shown here in optional Anthracite

with silver effect). The cabin is insulated to

impressive effect against noise and extreme

temperatures.

o Cruise control stores and maintains a desired

speed above approx. 30 km/h (activated using

the left-hand steering-column stalk). After

accelerating, the vehicle automatically returns

to the previously stored speed. Braking

cancels the setting.

s Start/Stop button to start the engine.

Insert the car key to start and stop the engine

by pushing this button.

o Comfort access system to open and

close the vehicle without having to take the

radio remote control unit into your hands. In

addition, the engine can be started without

the key.

o M leather steering wheel (diameter 369 mm),

three spokes, optionally with multifunction

buttons for remote control of radio/telephone

(optional). An M gear lever knob with the M

emblem is included should you opt for the

manual transmission. The handbrake lever

handle is made of Walknappa leather.

Professional radio with CD and DVD drive, eight

functional bookmarks, holds maps for all of

Europe on a single DVD – with high-resolution

6.5" graphics showing maps and arrows on the

fold-up monitor as well as bird’s eye view.

o Storage compartment package comprises

cupholder, luggage nets on the backs of front

top of the instrument panel (not available in

s 6-speed manual transmission for a

particularly sporty drive. Immensely smooth,

with perfect ratios and precise, short-throw

gearshifts. The addition of a sixth gear means

that the gear ratios are more closely spaced,

enabling you to make even more individual

use of the engine’s power.

s Auto Start/Stop display signals on

the info display when the engine has been

switched off by the Auto Start/Stop function

(e.g. at traffic lights or in a jam). The engine

is re-started automatically when you next

press the clutch, and the signal is turned off

(on 118i, 120i and 120d in conjunction with a

6-speed transmission).

s Shift Point Display lets you know when it

is more economical to drive in another gear. It

indicates when to shift up or down and adapts

these recommendations to your driving style.

While accelerating, for example, you would

receive a shift recommendation that would

save fuel (for models with 6-speed manual

transmission).

s On-board computer, provides information

about average speed, average and current

consumption, radius and outside temperature.

It also features an acoustic ice warning system.

s Instrument panel with analogue instruments,

red backlit speedometer and rev counter. Plus

on-board computer with LC display for mileage

counter and trip counter.

o 6-speed automatic transmission (here with

non-smoker package) with Adaptive

Transmission Management (ATM) and

Steptronic. This transmission performs very

fast, flawless gearshifts – for maximum dynamic

performance (on 135i only available with

gearshift paddles).

s Electric windows, pull/press switch and

open/close fingertip control, comfort closing

function and trap release; central switch for

opening and closing all windows simultaneously.

s Roof control switch for fully automatic opening and closing of the roof. The opening

operation can be activated at speeds of up to 40 km/h and continues up to 50 km/h.

The removable section of the backrest can be

volumes from 260 litres (roof open) to 305 litres

(roof closed). It has a storage compartment on

the right with a sliding net, four fastening points

and another storage compartment with a sliding

net on the rear seat backrest (not available in

conjunction with optional through-loading

system).

Transport bag allows for clean and safe

transport, for example, of two snowboards.

When the bag is not required, it can be

stowed out of sight to save space (included

in the optional through-loading system).

s ISOFIX child seat attachment, rear on the

two outer rear seats for safe attachment of a

child seat with clip-in plug connectors plus

additional fastening points on the upper part.

s Personal Profile: The Personal Profile stores

your personal preferences depending on

equipment for settings such as the temperature

and air distribution of the automatic air

conditioning, the position of the driver’s seat

and exterior mirrors, and the volume and sound

of the radio. These settings are then activated

when your key is used to unlock the central

locking.

s Front apron: under the BMW double kidney-shaped grille with chrome kidney slats, the central

air intake is a magnet for the eye as well. The two side air intakes serve to cool the brakes and give the

front a particularly athletic profile. Two side flaps accentuate the vehicle's broad front.

s Double tailpipe: the exhaust system with

two black, chrome-plated tailpipes is standard

on 135i.

s Dashboard: the 135i features special

scaling with extra display ranges.

Exclusively for the BMW 135i: the standard

package comes with specifically calibrated

M Sports suspension and sporty throttle

character. In addition, the 135i boasts sports

seats, Black high-gloss interior trim as well

as 18" mixed tyres (star-spoke 264). The special

front apron adds to the sporty character while

the M aerodynamic kit – comprising side skirts

and a powerful rear apron with integrated

diffuser.

s High performance brakes painted with

BMW logo with inner-vented, 17" front and

rear brake disks. They ensure shorter braking

distances and superior immobility at a

standstill.

BMW Recycling.

Your BMW is the product of a comprehensive recycling concept. But what exactly does that mean in practice?

It means that all the requirements of recycling are taken into account from the start, in the initial development of a

BMW. One example is careful material selection designed to preserve resources and to ensure effi cient recycling

compatible with the environment. Each BMW is designed and built for simple and economic recycling after its

long running life. Since 1994, we have been collecting the know-how required for this purpose at the unique

BMW Recycling and Dismantling Centre (RDC) near Munich. At the same time, the BMW Group is establishing a

complete network of vehicle recycling facilities within Europe, focusing in the process on the high standards of

quality and environmental care that BMW is renowned for. Please contact your BMW partner on all matters regarding

your end-of-life vehicle. They will be happy to help.
