Overview of Blood • The primary function of blood is to
supply oxygen and nutrients as well as constitutional elements to tissues and to remove waste products.
• Blood also enables hormones and
other substances to be transported between tissues and organs.
• Problems with blood composition or circulation can lead to downstream tissue malfunction.

Overview of Blood • Blood is also involved in
maintaining homeostasis by acting as a medium for transferring heat to the skin and by acting as a buffer system for bodily pH.
• The average adult has about five liters of blood living inside of their body

• The blood is circulated through the lungs and body by the pumping action of the heart.

Blood Composition

• Anatomically, blood is considered a connective tissue, due to its origin in the bones.
• Blood is the means and transport system of the body used in carrying elements (e.g. nutrition, waste, heat) from one location in the body to another, by way of blood vessels.

• Plasma is made up of 90% water, 7-8% soluble proteins (albumin maintains bloods osmotic integrity, others clot, etc), 1% electrolytes. One percent of the plasma is salt, which helps with the pH of the blood
• The largest group of solutes in plasma contains three important proteins; albumins, globulins, and clotting proteins.

Functions of Blood
• 1 - Transportation: • oxygen and carbon dioxide • nutrients • waste products (metabolic wastes,
excessive water and ions)

• 2 - Regulation - hormones and heat (to regulate body temperature).
• 3 - Protection - clotting mechanism protects against blood loss and leukocytes provide immunity against many disease-causing agents.
Functions of Blood
Prepared by Abeer Alhabash
When the human body loses a little bit of blood through a minor wound, the platelets cause the blood to clot so that the bleeding stops.
Because new blood is always being made inside of your bones, the body can replace the lost blood.
When the human body loses a lot of blood
through a major wound
That blood has to be replaced through a blood transfusion from other people.

• But everybody's blood is not the same.
• There are four different blood types.
• Plus, your blood has Rh factors which make it even more unique.
