Artist Statement
The Black Water series is composed from the torn and re-formed
pages of Joyce Carol Oates’ novella of the same title. A restricted
palate of black acrylic and spray glue (used as a textural finish) is
used to re-articulate the book object into a sculptural poetic object.
This palate, combined with the themes of the book itself, invites an
emergent exploration of submergence, scarcity, indeterminacy, loss,
and regeneration through the material properties of page and spine.
