Dear students

I hope you are all well. Last week the country honoured our fallen

heroes from World War 2 as Britain marked VE day with socially distanced garden events. The vast majority of people behaved

responsibly in a tribute to the discipline needed during times of conflict. Many people have family members who fought in both world

wars as well other conflicts around the world but recently Mr Brown emailed me a photo of his father’s WW2 medals, pictured below. Mr

Brown explained a bit about his father’s inspirational involvement in the war.

“My dad Private Cedric Brown served in the 8th Army Corp between 1940 -1945. After basic training he was posted to North Africa and after over two years there they made the 120 mile journey on foot taking over 12 months through areas of Italy. One battle at Monte Cassino lasted over 5 months. My dad was very proud to serve his country. When he passed in 2010 I inherited his war medals and many documents of priceless memorabilia.”

Today’s heroes are of course fighting a different battle but the aim is the same, to preserve lives and our freedom. As in WW2 everyone is playing their part. That includes you. When we return to normality, those of you who come back to school ready to learn having shown resilience and independence will be one of those heroes. Stay safe.
