Create new opportunities for airlines to reduce baggage mishandling losses and to improve the
passenger experience by offering new services through the introduction of RFID technology in
baggage operations
“It would be foolish to have every airline at a busy airport each introducing their own tracking solutions when
the places being tracked are often common use” - Andrew Price, IATA’s Global Director of Airport Operations
The main goal of the IATA cooperation with Longest Chance:

22
THE CHALLENGES
![Page 24: “HHRBTS” - Longest Chance...Results: IATA –Longest Chance Pilot Project (August 2015) - Readability rate of 99.9958% - Full compatibility with IATA Resolution 753 - Recommendation](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070811/5f0a13427e708231d429e5db/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
23
Main Challenges
1. Readability
Selecting a partner with the proven ability to reach high readability levels is of significant importance.
2. Accountability
Selecting a partner that provides the full range of products and services secures accountability.
![Page 25: “HHRBTS” - Longest Chance...Results: IATA –Longest Chance Pilot Project (August 2015) - Readability rate of 99.9958% - Full compatibility with IATA Resolution 753 - Recommendation](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070811/5f0a13427e708231d429e5db/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
24
The IATA trial cases
Challenge 1: Readability
• Historical trial results by IATA showed readability levels of between 95.54% to 98.78%.
• However, Longest Chance managed to achieve a readability level of 99.9958%.
• The difference in these levels translate into a significant amount of bags (next slide)
![Page 26: “HHRBTS” - Longest Chance...Results: IATA –Longest Chance Pilot Project (August 2015) - Readability rate of 99.9958% - Full compatibility with IATA Resolution 753 - Recommendation](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070811/5f0a13427e708231d429e5db/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
25
The readability rate differences in number of bags
Challenge 1: Readability
• Based on a potential requirement that the system should support 250M bags, a 99% readability rate results in 2.5M bags that are not read.
• Longest Chance reached 99.9958% readability in the IATA pilot, resulting in only 10K bags not read (based on 250M bags annually).
![Page 27: “HHRBTS” - Longest Chance...Results: IATA –Longest Chance Pilot Project (August 2015) - Readability rate of 99.9958% - Full compatibility with IATA Resolution 753 - Recommendation](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070811/5f0a13427e708231d429e5db/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
26
The readability levels depend on the following important components:
1. Quality of software2. Quality of RFID equipment3. Quality of UHF inlay (consisting of a chip and antenna)4. Quality of the bag tag with UHF inlay inside
If the airline does not control the above components by contracting one partner, high readability levels are at risk and problem solving will be challenging. Different providers will be motivated to shift responsibility to others.
