Inpharma 1321 - 19 Jan 2002

■ Antiretrovirals are effective in maintaining viralsuppression in patients with HIV infection whencontinued uninterrupted, report researchers fromEurope. In their study, 336 antiretroviral-naive patientswith HIV-1 infection who had achieved a viral load of< 50 copies/ml within 24 weeks of initiation ofantiretroviral therapy, had their viral loads measuredregularly for detection of viral rebound over 3.3 years.*The risk of rebound by 3.3 years was 25.3% (95% CI18.9–31.7), however this dropped to 5.2% (2.4–8.0) ifthose with a documented complete interruption ofantiretroviral therapy were excluded.* The study was supported by Glaxo-Wellcome.
