Inpharma 1321 - 19 Jan 2002 Antiretrovirals are effective in maintaining viral suppression in patients with HIV infection when continued uninterrupted, report researchers from Europe. In their study, 336 antiretroviral-naive patients with HIV-1 infection who had achieved a viral load of < 50 copies/ml within 24 weeks of initiation of antiretroviral therapy, had their viral loads measured regularly for detection of viral rebound over 3.3 years. * The risk of rebound by 3.3 years was 25.3% (95% CI 18.9–31.7), however this dropped to 5.2% (2.4–8.0) if those with a documented complete interruption of antiretroviral therapy were excluded. * The study was supported by Glaxo-Wellcome.
