Motions of the MoonMoon revolution: 27.3 days
Moon rotation: 27.3 days
Moon’s rotation = Moon’s revolution
same side of the moon always faces Earth
Moon phases, eclipses, tides caused by moon’s orbit (revolution) around Earth
Waxing: moon becomes brighter each day
Waning: moon becomes darker each day
Phases of the MoonWe see Moon due to reflected light from Sun.
Phases: different shapes of the Moon.
Moon Phases caused by moon’s revolution around Earth. Half of the moon is always in sunlight. Phases of the moon depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon faces Earth.Phases of the Moon Cycle: 29.5 days/ ~ month
new moon to next new moon = month
full moon to next full moon = month
Phases of the Moon
EclipsesEclipse: blocking sunlight; due to moon’s orbit slightly tilted (5º) with respect to
Earth’s orbit around the sun.
Solar (sun) eclipse: when the moon is between sun and earth, and blocks sunlight from reaching Earth; a new moon
blocking your view of the sun.
Lunar (moon) eclipse: occurs at a full moon when Earth (between sun and moon) blocks sunlight from reaching the moon.
Eclipses
TidesTide: rise and fall of ocean water every ~12.5 hours due to the
moon’s gravitational
pull on Earth.
Spring Tide: greatest difference between low and high tide; when sun, moon and earth are aligned in a straight line.
Neap Tide: least difference between low and high tide; when sun, earth and moon are aligned normal (90º) to each other.
