AssociationBetweenAdolescentEudaimonicBehavioursandEmotionalCompetenceinYoungAdulthoodAbstractTheroleofAristotelianeudaimonic(moral)valuesinhealthypsychosocialdevelopmentisarapidlygrowingareaofenquirythatcrossesthedisciplinesofphilosophyanddevelopmentalpsychology.Thepurposeofthisstudywastoexamineprospectiverelationshipsbetweenadolescenceeudaimonicvaluesdevelopmentandindicatorsofemotionalcompetenceandpsychopathologyinyoungadulthood.Wetestedtworelatedhypotheses:(1)thateudaimonicbehavioursinadolescence(indicatedbyactivitiesaimedatbenefitingotherindividuals,thecommunityorsociety)wouldpredictgreateremotionalcompetenceinyoungadulthood(indicatedbysenseofresponsibility,autonomy,planfulnessandselfcontrol)and(2)thatemotionalcompetenceinyoungadulthoodwouldreduceriskforanxiousdepressivesymptomsatthesameageaftercontrollingforprioremotionaldistressinadolescence.Dataweredrawnfromanongoing15wavepopulationbasedlongitudinalstudyofhealthanddevelopment,initiallyrecruitedatbirthin1983.SEMwasusedtomodelrelationshipsandwasbasedondatafrom991participants(384maleand607female).Consistentwithexpectations,adolescenteudaimonicbehaviourswereassociatedwithhigheremotionalcompetenceinyoungadulthoodwhich,inturn,wasinverselyassociatedwithanxiousdepressivesymptomsatthesameage.Interventionsthatfocusonopportunitiesfortheeudaimonicdevelopmentinadolescencemayplayaroleinpromotingemotionalcompetenceinemergingadulthood.
