Your responsibilities

Primary responsibilities:

- Capture and interpret requirements, generating clear specifications, proposals and project plans - Conduct feasibility studies and develop high-level designs for electrical machines - Detailed electromagnetic and thermal designs of electrical machines of all types, including

permanent magnet, field wound, switched & synchonous reluctance, induction etc. - Demonstrate that designs are robust, cost effective and fit for purpose, defining appropriate

manufacturing routes where required - Simulate the transient behaviour of electric drive systems, including electrical machine

performance, efficiency, component temperatures etc.

Secondary responsibilities: - Select, source and commission software, tools and equipment to support engineering projects - Keep up-to-date with new technologies and investigate innovative ways of incorporating them into

future products, co-ordinating grant funding applications where appropriate - Collaborate with the commercial team to generate new opportunities and win client projects - Build & test prototype electrical machine hardware/systems as required for client/internal projects - Other activities as required to support the business

Role Requirements

Essential experience: - Ground-up development of electrical machines from requirements capture through to hardware - Insulation system design appropriate for battery voltages ranging from 48V-800V - Performance predictions of electrical machines using electromagnetic FEA - Thermal modelling of electrical machines - Correlating simulations with experimental results to improve performance predictions - Strong understanding of automotive hybrid/electric powertrain layouts and their operating modes - Fault-finding and diagnostic skills, including acquiring, analysing and understanding complex data - Knowledge of relevant industry standards and design practices

Desireable experience: - Electrical machine design for high-volume applications (e.g. automotive or industrial) - Development of motorsport and/or high-performance automotive hybrid systems (e.g. 100kW+) - Previous role in “customer facing” technical environment - Knowledge of power electronics/inverters and their application at system level - Development of design verification test plans for electrical machines - Familiarity with a range of winding topologies, magnet materials, electrical steels and their relative

advantages and disadvantages
