Gain extensive hands-on experience in spinal surgical techniques If you are seeking extensive practice in open and minimally invasive spine techniques this hands-on surgical skills course is for you. Spend up to 70% of your time in the cadaver lab developing and refining anterior and posterior surgical techniques for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. Then, customize your learning and improve your surgical performance during 90 minutes of open lab time. You choose a surgical procedure you want to focus on under the direct tutelage of our renowned orthopaedic spine faculty.
In addition to standard surgical procedures, learn practical skills relating to both basic and complex spinal deformity treatments, commonly used osteotomy and minimally invasive techniques. You will also review management techniques and ways to avoid complications.
Didactic lectures, evidence-based updates and lively debates augment the skills lab experience. World class experts in surgical spine care and the low, 1:3 faculty–to–participant ratio make this one course you do not want to miss!
Course highlights include: • Increased time in the hands-on lab, including 90 minutes of customized instruction • Technique and anatomy oriented curriculum, including: - Anterior cervical techniques (ACDF, corpectomies, and disc replacement) - Posterior cervical techniques (open foraminotomy, laminoplasty, laminectomy) - Lumbar techniques (MIS discectomy and vertebral body resection)
Who should attend this course? This course benefits orthopaedic surgeons with an interest in spine, including surgeons in general or spine focused practice, and neurosurgeons.
This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to:• Compare and contrast various surgical and nonsurgical treatment options for cervical,
thoracic and lumbar spinal disorders• Compare and contrast anterior and posterior, open and minimally invasive
spine surgery techniques• Describe the complications of spinal surgery techniques, how to avoid them, and
how to manage them• Distinguish between or among the equipment alternatives necessary to perform
spinal surgery• Use the latest evidence to support the indications and contra-indications for surgical
techniques learned in the practical sessions
How far will your skills advance in this course? Test yourself and find out! Before participating in a surgical skills lab, complete the ‘Performance Checklist’ to evaluate your confidence at each stage of the procedure. Evaluate yourself again after the lab to find out exactly how far you have progressed. This distinctive AAOS CME offering creates the opportunity to reflect upon and pursue your desired performance level. Participation is voluntary and results are confidential.
