Metro into the futureAshton upon Mersey councillor,Brian Rigby, represents Traffordon Transport for GreaterManchester. Here, he outlinessome o f t he exc i t i ngdevelopments for Metrolink.Brian says “Whilst it isfrustrating for passengers whenthe trams on the Altrincham lineoccasionally don’t run on timebecause of major incidents orthere is a need to close the linefor essential work (as willhappen from time to time) Ithink you will agree that Metrolink is a huge success, so muchso that during the peak hours overcrowding can be a problem. You may be aware that the system is expanding with yet morenew trams being purchased and two new lines coming intoservice in the near future. The new Chorlton line will extend toDidsbury in 2013 and a service to Oldham which comes intoservice later this year will continue to Rochdale by Spring2014. An additional line across the city centre will benefitcommuters and relieve the line between St Peter’s Square andPiccadilly. So, the growing pains today will certainly benefitthe people of Sale in the future, as Metrolink becomes thelargest tram system in the country.”
