Conductor ShieldingA conductor shield is provided on allcables in this catalogue. The standardconductor shield on Alcatel CanadaWire ENERGEX-SP cables is extrudedsemiconducting crosslinked polyolefin(XLPO), which meets or exceeds theAEIC, ICEA and CSA requirementsshown at right. In addition, AlcatelCanada Wire offers cable withsupersmooth conductor shielding,which enhances the life expectancy ofthe cable.
Insulation
The standard insulation on AlcatelCanada Wire ENERGEX-SP Cables isunfilled crosslinked polyethylene(XLPE), meeting or exceeding therequirements of AEIC CS5, ICEA S-66-524 and CSA C68.3 as shown at
right.Using Alcatel Canada WiresEXELCURE process, the conductorshield, insulation and insulation shieldare true-triple extruded and curedtogether in a sealed, dry curingsystem.
All insulating compounds are dis-pensed through an Extra CleanCompound Handling System tominimize contamination and increasecable life expectancy.

Short Circuit Capacity

InstallationPulling Tension
The maximum tension applied to acable during installation is limited inorder to prevent damage or distortionof cable components which couldreduce the life or reliability of thecable.
The method of pulling is significant inthat different methods will result indifferent stresses on critical cable
components for the same overalltension
Alcatel Canada Wire recommendsthat, wherever possible, the cable bepulled by means of the conductor,aided where feasible by a grip overthe outer jacket.

At any bend the tension should notexceed 22.5 kN per metre of radius ofthe bend.
When designing the duct layout, it isrecommended that the bends beconcentrated near the end from whichthe cable is to be pulled. This practicewill result in lower tensions. In somecases, the tensions resulting fromalternative directions should becalculated.
Both the cable and pulling rope shouldbe well lubricated with a goodcommercial cable lubricant followingthe lubricant suppliers instructions.
The recommendations given above areintended to cover a wide range ofpulling conditions. It is possible, underideal conditions, and with experiencedsupervision, to exceed these limits. Forfurther guidance, see IEEE Paper 84T&D 365-3, or contact Alcatel CanadaWire.

Field TestingA high-voltage DC test made beforeplacing a new cable system in servicewill normally reveal grossimperfections such as mechanicaldamage during installation orimproperly made accessories. It is notexpected to reveal deterioration due toageing in service.
At any time during installation, a ProofTest may be made at a voltage notexceeding that shown in the tableapplied for five consecutive minutes.
After installation and before the cableis placed in regular service, anAcceptance Test may be made at avoltage not exceeding that shown inthe table applied for 15 consecutiveminutes.
After the cable has been completelyinstalled and placed in regular service,a Maintenance Test may be made atany time within the first five years at avoltage not exceeding that shown in
the table applied for five consecutiveminutes. Recent research has shownthat the loss of dielectric strengthcaused by normal wet ageing willshorten cable life when subjected toDC testing. After that time, such testingis not recommended.
These tests should only be undertakenby persons familiar with the use of theequipment and appropriate safetyprecautions. If any equipment isincluded beyond the cableterminations, the dielectric strength of
such equipment must be taken intoconsideration when establishing thetest voltage.
The maximum permissible leakagecurrent can be calculated with theformula below. Note that this does notinclude terminal leakage.
