Blank Preparation1. Cuttheblankabout1/8"longerthantheBrassTubeto allowfor“blow-out”orholeelongation.
2. Drilltheblankwitha27/64"drillbitataspeedof900 to1200RPM.
3. PolishtheBrassTubewith220gritsandpapertoremove oxidationandroughentheTubeforbetteradhesion.This canbedonebyhandorbychuckingitinadrillpressor portablehanddrill.
4. PreparetogluewiththickCA(cyanoacrylate)glueor two-partfastdryingepoxy.
5. ApplythegluetotheoutsideoftheBrassTubewitha liberalamountaroundtheendthatisinsertedfirst.Donot applygluetotheinsideoftheblank,asthiswillcausethe gluetogetinsidetheBrassTubeandruinit.
6. InserttheBrassTubewithatwistingmotionintotheblank untiltheTubeisequidistantbetweenbothendsoftheblank. Wipeoffanyexcessglueontheendsoftheblank.Allowthe gluetodry.
7. Usingabarreltrimmer,disk,orbeltsander,trimtheends oftheblankuntilyoucanjustseethebrightbrassendsofthe Tube.Thefaceoftheendsmustbeperpendiculartothe BrassTubeandparallelwitheachother.Itisimperativeto matchthelengthofthetrimmedblanktotheoriginallength oftheBrassTubeandthattheinsideoftheBrassTubeis cleanandfreeofanyglue.
Turning the Blank1. Assembletheblankonthemandrelwiththebushingsplaced oneithersideoftheblank.Eachbushinghasastepthatis designedtobeinsertedintotheTubeforstabilitywhile turning,astheinnerdiameteroftheTubeislargerthan themandrel.Notethatallofthebushingsarethesamesize. Note:EitherWoodSpacersorextraBushingsmaybeused tofilltheextraspaceonthemandrel.
2. Tightenthetailstockandthentightenthemandrelnutthat holdstheblank.Donotover-tightenthetailstockormandrel nutasthismaycausethemandreltoflex,causingtheblank togooutofround.
3. Turntheblanktothedesiredshape,makingsurethat thesurfacesnexttothebushingsareturnedtothe samediameterasthebushings.
4. Afterturning,sandthesurfacesinprogressivestepsof 220,400,600,and1000grit.Ifahigherfinishisdesired, micromeshsandpapermaybeused.
5. Applythefinishofchoiceandpolish.
6. Removetheblankfromthemandrel.
